    Watching the Arizona game from last year.

    by pappyman
    2017-07-11 03:06:56

    This game's a good preview of what we're going to see on offense this coming season. Remember, this was one of the four games w/out Joe Williams. I also think that Tim Patrick was out as well. Anyway, Armand Shyne looked damn good before he went down to injury, thus causing Joe Williams to come out of retirement. Shyne reminds me of a Devontae Booker-type runner. He even wears Booker's number 23. What's crazy is if Shyne doesn't injure his knee on that run (a run that put him over 100 yards for the game mind you), Joe Williams probably doesn't come out retirement and have his legendary season. This game also showed that Troy Williams is a capable runner from the QB position. Really, under Troy Taylor's tutelage, I think that Williams is going to develop into a Treyvon Boykin-type player this year. The fact that Utah is returning a vast amount of experienced receivers this year (they really only lost Tim Patrick and Corey Butler-Byrd, who were both Seniors) coupled with the fact that we are going to have two talented, pass-catching Tight Ends in Handley and Siale, I think the Utes are going to have a breakout year on offense. If the defense meets their expectations, I think Utah is in for a banner year on the field. This may FINALLY be the year we win the Pac-12 South if everyone stays healthy. We're just as talented as any of the other teams in our division, INCLUDING USC IMO. Remember, we beat them last year WITHOUT Joe Williams AND they had Sam Darnold at QB.

    If Utah beat TDS again tomorrow and moves on to the Super Regionals, we should suddenly become Michigan fans.

    by pappyman
    2017-05-20 00:25:21

    If you want the Utes to be successful, you might want Michigan Softball to beat Washington Softball tomorrow. A Michigan win tomorrow coupled with somebody other than UW winning their regional would be fabulous for the Lady Utes. If somebody other than Washington wins the Seattle Regional (which is paired up with the Salt Lake City Regional) Utah would end up HOSTING the Super Regionals IN Salt Lake. ANOTHER thing that has never happened. If that were to come to pass, Utah could be a Women's College World Series team. Go Utes! Beat TDS again!

    Utah baseball won tonight 6-5 on a walk-off 2-run home run by Wade Gulden in the bottom of the 9th inning with two out on a 3-2 count. Do to his heroics, the Utes swept the USC Trojans!!! That's the stuff of legend right there. Go Utes!!!

    Apparently, Utah's game against Stephen F. Austin is at freaking 10:30 am MT/7:30 am HT because of some ridiculous rule that allows for the host team Hawaii to switch starting times.

    Utah is probably the best team in next week's Diamond Head Classic.

    by pappyman
    2016-12-18 03:29:15

    Diamond Head Classic Bracket

    Utah is 7-2;
    San Francisco, Utah's opponent on Thursday, is 7-2 (with one more game on Monday);
    Illinois State is 5-3 (with one more game on Sunday);
    San Diego State is 5-4;
    Tulsa is 5-4;
    Host team Hawaii is 4-5;
    Southern Miss is 3-5;
    Stephen F. Austin is 3-5 (win one more game on Sunday)

    On paper, Utah looks like the best team in this tournament. They are also the only team who reigns from a P6 conference (Power 6 in College Basketball if you include the Big East who currently has four ranked teams, including both teams who beat Utah (Xavier and Butler) plus #1 and defending National Champion Villanova). If they want to be something more than just an NIT-bound team this year, the Utes could make some noise by going out and winning the thing (making Utah 10-2 in non-conference play). Those two losses don't look half bad right now, as both were to Top 20-ranked Big East teams. Also, the Championship Game is played on Christmas day @ 6 pm Utah time. That would be a good way to relax (NOT) after a day of opening Christmas gifts and $#!+. Go Utes!

    Even though we lost to Oregon, there is still a scenario where we get invited to the Rose Bowl.

    by pappyman
    2016-11-22 21:48:45

    Now, I know it might sound far-fetched, but, we still have a chance to go there. This is the scenario:

    Utah wins @ Colorado (making both Utah and Colorado 9-3 overall), giving USC the Pac-12 South Title; USC then goes on to lose to WASHINGTON in the Pac-12 Championship Game, making them either 9-4 or 8-5 (if they lose to Notre Dame) overall

    Now if this were to happen, Washington likely would go to the College Football Playoff @ 12-1 (9-1) as the Pac-12 Champion, thus creating a scenario where the Rose Bowl has to replace the Huskies in their game. If Utah (#22 in the CFP Rankings) were to win @ Colorado (#9 in the CFP Rankings), they likely would jump to around #13 or #14 I should think and pass Colorado in the Rankings. Also, if USC were to lose in the Pac-12 Championship (making them either 9-4 or 8-5 (via a loss to Notre Dame)), they would probably drop behind Utah in the final CFP rankings. This is because the selection committee uses head-to-head victories as part of their criteria in ranking teams. Because Utah beat USC head-to-head, it likely would jump the Utes over the Trojans. In fact, Utah would be the ONLY team in the Pac-12 who would have beaten both USC AND Colorado. Utah would then be the highest ranked team in the Pac-12 behind Washington, who would be in the College Football Playoff. I'd think that the Selection Committee would select the Utes over both the Buffaloes and the Trojans because we would have beaten both of them. Not to mention the fact that both USC and Colorado would be coming off of losses.

    That last play that gave Oregon the win is beyond controversial.

    by pappyman
    2016-11-19 22:06:31

    Yes, Derrick Carrington's foot may have been down inbounds when he initially caught the ball. However, watch the replay again. He slightly loses control of it and doesn't regain complete control before his foot is clearly out of bounds. By rule, he didn't complete the process of the catch and the pass should have been ruled incomplete. That's a bad call by the officials to rule that there was indisputable video evidence to overturn the call in my opinion.

    I'm cheering for USC hard tonight.

    by pappyman
    2016-11-19 20:55:24

    I want them to win so Utah can go into Boulder next week and deny the Buffs a trip to the title game. At this point, I don't really care that we are not going there. That would be the makings of a REAL rivalry with Colorado. We'd give them a taste of their own medicine. A win there would also probably land us in a better bowl than they would get.

    How high does Utah jump in the rankings this week?

    by pappyman
    2016-11-05 23:55:56

    The following teams who were ranked ahead of our Utes this week in the CFP Rankings lost today:

    #4 Texas A&M (now 7-2) @ unranked Mississippi State 35-28 (who BYU beat)
    #10 Nebraska (now 7-2) @ #6 Ohio State 62-3
    #11 Florida (now 6-2) @ unranked Arkansas 31-10
    #13 LSU (now 5-3) vs. #1 Alabama 10-0

    Personally, if I were a voter, I would move Utah past ALL FOUR TEAMS, especially since they have equal or better overall records than all of them and because of their "impressive" loss to Washington last week (the Huskies are DESTROYING Cal @ Cal tonight). If Utah were to pass all four teams, that would put them @ #12 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. Really, what have any of those other teams done to deserve their ranking that Utah hasn't done? Hell, LSU, who Utah should DEFINITELY pass (even though they probably won't because of SEC bias) is now 5-3 overall. USC has a better overall record than they do and the Trojans aren't even ranked. Here are my predictions come Tuesday for Pac-12 teams in the CFP Rankings:

    #4 Washington 9-0 (6-0)
    #11 Colorado 7-2 (5-1)
    #12 Utah 7-2 (4-2)
    #22 Washington State 7-2 (6-0)
    #25 USC 6-3 (5-2)

    If Utah wins @ Oregon State on Saturday and @ UCLA in two weeks, we could potentially get College Gameday for Washington.

    by pappyman
    2016-10-10 01:46:37

    Assuming Washington beats Oregon State at home in two weeks. We would be 7-1 and ranked probably somewhere from 10-15. Washington will be in the Top 5 obviously if they are 7-0. Their main competition for said College Gameday would be between Nebraska/Wisconsin and Clemson/Florida State. I guess we'll see.

    The averages going into the Cal game are in Utah's favor.

    by pappyman
    2016-09-28 00:02:07

    They project a win for Utah with a likely score of 35-31. If you take how many points Utah's offense averages per game (27.25) and how many points Cal's defense gives up on average per game (42.5), add them together (69.75), and then average them, you would likely get Utah's projected scoring level against Cal (34.875). If you do that same thing for Cal (45.5 ppg on offense) against Utah (15.75 ppg on defense), and average them, you would get the projected amount of points one would expect for Cal to score against Utah (30.625). As both numbers would round up, that projects a 35-31 victory for the Utes.

    What will Utah be ranked (now) today?

    by pappyman
    2016-09-25 01:01:09

    First off, I think that it is firmly established that Utah will be ranked. You don't fall out of the rankings after a win, especially when that win comes over the USC Trojans. That being said, several teams ahead of Utah in the rankings lost today. #17 Arkansas got dominated by #10 Texas A&M 45-24. #23 Ole Miss destroyed #12 Georgia 45-14. #11 Wisconsin won @ #8 Michigan State 30-6. #14 Tennessee beat #19 Florida 38-28. And Auburn beat #18 LSU 18-13 in a crazy game. IMO, Utah definitely passes LSU, Florida, and Arkansas. We might also pass Georgia, who got destroyed by a team ranked 11 spots lower than they were in the rankings. If you assume that the Utes pass all of the teams who lost today (sans Michigan State), that would put Utah (who is currently #23 in the Coaches' Poll and #24 in the AP poll) @ #19 in the Coaches' Poll and #20 in the AP poll.

    IF Utah beats USC on Friday, where do you guys think that we will be ranked come Sunday?

    by pappyman
    2016-09-20 04:11:38

    It's an interesting question. I think that we'd pass the loser of Tennessee-Florida. I think that we could also likely pass the loser of Arkansas-Texas A&M if that loser is Arkansas. If LSU were to lose @ Auburn, I think we'd pass the Bayou Bengals. If Ole Miss loses to Georgia, I think that we likely pass them too. This also doesn't put into play any possible upsets, that are seeming to happen every week this year. I think a win over USC (if convincing) would put us in the Top 20. Thoughts?

    10 FREAKING SACKS?!? Are you kidding me? I almost feel bad for SJSU. Almost being the key word. Just dominating defense. Offense looked pretty good tonight too. Cory Butler-Byrd's going to be a game changer because his presence makes it harder for teams to double Tim Patrick. I predict that we beat USC on Friday by two touchdowns. Go Utes!

    That 11-plus minute drive in the fourth quarter by the Utes was a beauty.

    by pappyman
    2016-09-11 00:27:37

    I really do wish that they would have gone for it on fourth down though. They only had to get a couple of inches, and BYU hadn't stopped our rushing attack at ALL that drive. Zack Moss looks like a man among boys out there. I would have just given him the ball and let him get those few inches. Had that drive been a TD drive instead of resulting in a field goal, that game is not even in question there at the end.

    Just re-watched (actually, watched for the 1st time) the entire game from Thursday night. I honestly do not understand at all the concerns of some on this board.

    by pappyman
    2016-09-03 01:26:32

    To me, it seemed glaringly obvious that Utah was the far superior team, and that they were just getting the kinks worked out in their first game on the field against a scrappy, inferior opponent. I'm actually encouraged by what I saw. Winning 24-0 really was a dominant performance. Especially since the Utes could have won 27 or even 31 to nothing if they wanted to run up the score there at the end (we had the ball in the red zone and chose to run out the clock). Troy Williams has got it, and Utah has a legitimate passing attack this year which was lacking in a major way last season. I didn't get to watch much of the game on Thursday because I had to go to Utah Opera Chorus rehearsal. The knowledge that I had about the game basically came from watching highlights and from reading what others had posted. However, now that I have watched the entire game, I can form my own opinions. Honestly, those touting doom and gloom are up in the night. The defense was completely dominant, and the offense showed glimmers of legitimate potential. Troy McCormick looks like he could be a real weapon this year if Utah is a pass-first offense. He could be our version of like a LaMichael James or a De'Anthony Thomas of Oregon fame. We've got legit wide receivers this year (especially if Corey Butler-Byrd returns). If our offense (led by Troy Williams) can be consistent enough this year with our defense remaining dominant, we really do have the type of team who could win not just the Pac-12 South, but the Pac-12 Conference Championship. If Utah can score in the high 20's to mid 30's every game, they have a real chance to win the Pac-12 South and maybe even the Pac-12 outright with a defense looking this dominant.

    We went 9-4 with him because Joe Williams was amaze-balls.
    (653 days ago, 0 stars)

    I agree that we win that game with Huntley, but I'm not going to blame Williams solely for the loss.
    (653 days ago, 0 stars)

    We win that game with Tyler Huntley under center. Not having your starting QB just kills you, especially in this conference.

    That was quite possibly the greatest extra point conversion in the history of football.
    (653 days ago, 1 stars)

    I was very pleased when the officials correctly ruled that his one hit was NOT targeting.

    RE: Zoobs are doing better. I think they threw 4 TD passes tonight.
    (661 days ago, 1 stars)

    RE: They really feel they were better than LSU and Wisconsin?
    (661 days ago, 1 stars)

    I agree. A win by Utah over Stanford and then @ USC would be just gigantic for us.
    (661 days ago, 1 stars)

    I fear Washington State more. They're better than USC is.
    (661 days ago, 1 stars)

    I agree. But I think that Carrington's actually better than Steve Smith was.
    (674 days ago, 0 stars)

    Siaosi Wilson is also a really good receiver.
    (680 days ago, 0 stars)

    I agree with the Lamar Jackson comparison. Especially since Huntley is also leading the team in rushing right now. He's the most overall talented QB we've had since Alex Smith.
    (680 days ago, 1 stars)

    It's perfect timing for him to come back next year too. He'll essentially replace Carrington, who is a senior.
    (680 days ago, 0 stars)

    RE: I'll trade that one for the pick and out of bounds calls that robbed 14 more points.
    (680 days ago, 5 stars)

    Some of those offensive linemen of theirs sure have had their fill of cheese and milk.

    Nice to see that Troy Williams go into the game in the victory formation.

    Both Cal and Oregon State beat Oregon last year.

    I hope he's okay. Geez.
    (718 days ago, 0 stars)

    Didn't Lo go out to injury last year too?
    (719 days ago, 0 stars)

    That's a gigantic offensive line.
    (728 days ago, 0 stars)

    Loni Gosdis on Facebook is claiming that Carrington is announcing today (Tuesday) that he is transferring to Utah.
    (728 days ago, 1 stars)

    Also, don't forget that Lo Falemaka is also back from last year @ Center. We really are only breaking in two new players (RT and LG).
    (730 days ago, 6 stars)

    Watching the Arizona game from last year.
    (742 days ago, 5 stars)

    I feel bad for Katie Donovan. She just threw a three-hitter and only gave up two runs against one of the best offensive teams in the country in a losing effort.

    If Utah beat TDS again tomorrow and moves on to the Super Regionals, we should suddenly become Michigan fans.
