    Hoops recruiting news from twitterverse

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2019-04-04 17:27:18

Sr. transfer G Brandon Boyd (Idaho State) has heard from Utah. 6'0" PG who shoots 33% from deep.

Sr Transfer G Max Hazzard (Cal Irvine) has heard from Utah. 5'10" PG who shoots 38% from deep. I've seen him play, and had a Bibbins flashback.

SMU just got a commit from 4-star JUCO SG Tyson Jolly. Former Baylor player. Probably rules out Taz Sherman, who visited SMU last weekend. Now likely Utah vs West Virginia.

Soph Justice Sueing to transfer from Cal. 6'7" SF. Utes were one of the finalists in his HS recruiting. Hmmmm.

Most of this is sourced from @utebuntu

Utes play winner of OU/WSU at 11:30PM ET Thursday on ESPN

    by Ute_In_Texas

I think we get Bill Walton.

The OU game is on P-12 network, Wednesday also at 11:30PM ET. Go Cougs!

OU is a tough draw for the Utes. Since a mid-season fade, they have been playing well lately. Won their last 4 including wins over UW and ASU. Plus Larry hasn't had much luck vs Dana Altman.

Just checked Sagarin, and he has OU ranked as the best team in the PAC. Sigh.

    Big game vs WSU tonight

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2019-02-23 12:32:17

I think the Utes need to win 2 of their remaining 4 conference games to finish above .500 and get an NIT bid. Losing this one would really hurt their chances.

WSU has been riding an incredible hot streak by all-conference player Robert Franks. WSU has been tough since he got healthy and into game shape. Note that Franks DNP in the first meeting (injured), which was a Ute rout. Keep him under control and WSU can be beaten. Elleby can also play, but the rest of the team is a bunch of guys who should be playing in the Big West and Mountain West.

    GO UTES! Need this one.

    Desperation game for ASU tonight!

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2019-02-16 08:03:28

ASU was in all the Big Dance projections until they laid an egg at CU Wednesday night. They desperately need tonight's game to build their resume back up. They have 6 games left, including the Oregon road trip. They probably need to win 5 of the 6 and make a run to the PAC tournament finals to secure an NCAA bid.

OTOH the Utes probably need to win 2 more regular season games to secure an NIT bid.

Should be a high energy game tonight. GO UTES!

    Great shooter.

Utes are full, so if Sherman commits someone will have to go.

This weekend's surprising results put an NIT bid back in play.

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2019-02-10 17:11:48

I believe the Utes have to win 10 conference games to get an NIT bid. That guarantees a winning conference record, and a winning record overall.

To review, here's the remaining schedule:
    Home vs AU and ASU
    at UW and WSU
    at CU
    Home vs USC and UCLA

Since the Utes have 7 conference wins they have to find 3 more wins in these 7 games. Prior to this weekend I thought wins at CU and WSU were likely, but now I am doubtful. I thought the Utes would be lucky to win 1 of the 4 home games remaining, but now a sweep seems possible. Now I see only 1 sure loss coming (at UW) and 6 coin toss games.

Utes must manage to win half of the coin toss games to earn an NIT bid. This weekend's results make it impossible to predict any individual game. It's going to be a fun ride!

    My 2 cents.

Random observations on the win at USC

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2019-02-07 13:08:09

Larry tightened up the rotation. Jones didn't play, and Topa only played 3 minutes. 7 guys played 99% of the minutes. FYI USC did the same.

USC is thin up front. The Utes took advantage of Rakocevic foul issues and dominated the boards in the first half. When Rakocevic returned in the 2nd half, USC won the boards pretty convincingly.

Utes did a nice job switching defenses. It didn't produce many turnovers, but it confused USC enough that they threw up a lot of bad shots.

Utes attacked the USC zone well. Battin/Allen at the FT line produced some easy baskets. Unfortunately the Ute offense lost its way a bit when they decided to run clock with 10 minutes to go. They passed up some good shots to run clock, and ended up forcing some bad shots to beat the shot clock. Maybe should have kept up the attack until the last 3-4 minutes.

The Utes must have practiced all week against the press. They handled the USC press well until the last couple of minutes, when USC had to throw caution to the wind and got very physical. USC was willing to risk fouls at that point of the game. The Utes did not react well to the USC physicality.

JJ is a solid player when he's not in foul trouble. He has his best games when the refs 'let em play'. He tends to get timid, and thus get benched, when the refs take over the game and start saddling everyone with fouls. Looks like his ankle is finally 100% too! I think 10/10 will become routine for him as long as the fouls don't pile up. Of course, he's an awkward looking player so he tends to be a bit of a foul magnet. Note he had ZERO turnovers last night.

    My 2 cents

    by Ute_In_Texas

The win at USC gives some faint hope. If the Utes can win at UCLA they are back on track for a realistic shot at a winning record and an NIT bid.

    Key game today. GO UTES!

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2019-02-02 09:22:30

It is the only game in this 6 game stretch (starting with Oregon) where the Utes will be a significant favorite. Today is a 'must win' if the Utes are going to win 10 conference games and get an NIT bid.

The Utes will have to win 2 of these 6 games. Missed opportunity vs Oregon. A win in SoCal seems unlikely. Best chance at a second win would be to beat one of the AZ schools in the Hunty.

    GO UTES!

Vegas says Utes are a 1 point favorite over OU tonight!

    by Ute_In_Texas

OU has been playing beneath their power ranking since Bol Bol got hurt, but still, I didn't expect the Utes to be favored. Utes should also be favored Saturday vs OSU.

Big weekend for the hoops team. With a sweep they have a real shot at a winning conference record, and that would likely yield an NIT bid. Everybody get out to the Hunty and support the Utes this weekend!

Lady Utes play OSU on Saturday. Looking forward to the "Lady Utes Pound Beavers" headline!

Utah vs Maine tonight: Scouting the Bears

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2018-11-08 12:15:08

Good news! Rumor has it that JJ will play tonight.

Maine is rebuilding after an ugly locker room fight last season caused them to clean house. They have 8 new players and a new coach who was promoted from women's coach (cue Juddy jokes here!). They were 6-26 last year, and 24-100 over the last 4 years. They have never made the big dance. Former Ute coach Jim Boylan is an alum.

They play a deliberate style. Almost half their shots are 3's. They are not very big; the tallest players in the rotation are 6'8". Most of their players are from overseas. They played Tuesday night and lost 62-50 at Denver. In that game they rebounded well, but shot poorly and turned the ball over a bunch.

They play in the America East Conference, with schools like Stony Brook, Albany, Vermont, New Hampshire, etc. They are picked to finish 7th out of 9 in the conference this season. It's so early that rankings are meaningless, but just for grins Sagarin has them ranked #320, vs the Utes #70.

They are led by 6'7" Jr F Andrew Fleming, 6'8" So F Vilgot Larsson and 6'8" Jr post Vincent Eze. They are still sorting out their guard line, although 6'5" Jr SG Isiah White is probably their best returning player.

Not much to say. Both Maine and Utah are still experimenting with their playing rotations. Maine can't match the Utes size and talent. I expect to Utes will turn them over a bunch and score a lot of cheap baskets. Utes win handily, but I doubt they cover the 22.5 point spread.

    My 2 cents.

Utes beat Yotes: The view from the cheap seats.

    by Ute_In_Texas
    2018-11-02 17:38:59

Not much to say about the game. The Utes started fast and when the lead got to 30+ Larry started to experiment, things got lax, and the game tightened up a bit as the Yotes continued to play hard. Yotes actually won the 2nd half by 8 points.

Larry will be pleased with the passing and the fast breaks. Scoring 96 points is a good thing!

Larry will not be pleased with the rebounding and defense. The rebounds were even for the game. Amazing, considering the Utes were 2-3 " taller at most positions. Topo and Allen were the only Utes with >4 boards. Rebounding may be a problem again this year. Interior defense was also an issue. The Yotes got way too many layups, and scored 76 points! The Ute freshmen looked lost on D at times.

Shot selection was also an issue. Utes jacked up too many 3's when they should have been working the ball inside.

Our first look at the new faces. The competition wasn't great so I am not sure of this analysis, but what the heck ... it's fun to do! My first impressions:

Tillman and Barefield looked good. A little more confident than last year. They are the team leaders.

Allen can play. Good body. Aggressive. Not afraid of contact. A natural scorer who can also rebound. Once he figures out defense, he'll be all-PAC.

Gach can also play. Long and aggressive. Runs the floor like a gazelle. Another scorer who needs to learn to play D. He played PG a lot, and was a pleasant surprise as a ball-handler (only 1 turnover). It will really shake up the playing rotation if he can handle PG.

Topalovic has a big body and knows how to use it. He runs the floor OK for a guy of his size. Good hands. Offense is limited to dunks. Has no hops. Needs to learn to 'wall up' on D. A decent college big.

Morley is very slow. Gives good effort. Likes to hang outside and shoot 3's. He won't play much once JJ is healthy.

Battin plays hard and is supposed to be a shooter. He's not real quick. He needs to spend a year in the weight room before he's ready to compete on the boards.

Jones was the big surprise. I though he was going to start and be a key piece, but he only saw 14 minutes. Looked good in limited time. Did not get a feel for his D. If Gach proves he can handle PG, then Jones may not see fewer minutes than anticipated.

PVD looked the same. He hustles and plays hard on D. Good passer. His minutes will largely depend on his 3pt percentage. The Utes will need his shooting if he can hit 40% or better. If he shoots 31% like last year, he may not see many minutes.

Hendrix is the wild card. His skill set is similar to Gach with better D and lesser ball-handling. At times he plays a bit out of control. If he can get his skills under control, he will be a very good player.

Most college teams play 8 guys, so the competition will be fierce for the 8th and 9th spots. So far it looks like:

In the rotation: JJ, Topo, Tillman, Barefield, Allen, Gach

Fighting for the last 2 rotation spots: PVD, Hendrix, Jones, Battin (the only big in this group)

End of the bench: Thioune (injured - possible redshirt), Popoola, Gaskin, Morley and his fellow walk-ons)

We'll know a lot more in a couple of weeks.

    My 2 cents. Comments welcome.
