    Idaho State Football

    by UtahFanSir
    2019-09-10 02:46:06

The Bengals are 1-0. The Big Sky team beat Western Colorado of Grand Junction 38-13.

Virtually no one believes they have a chance to beat the Utes in SLC. I’m going with 48-13. KW was a coach at ISU early in his career. I suspect he’ll not want the Utes to run up the score in this one, while if 48-13 comes to pass, its a drubbing. We may be surprised at how well ISU performs, at least early when adrenaline is running and late when the Utes are coasting.

Consensus is that Utah has had one eye on USC for weeks. Understandable if true, despite the one week at a time mantra.

I hope no one gets injured. I want Utah’s OL to continue to protect Huntley, for there to be no turnovers, and for penalties to be at an absolute minimum. It would be ideal if receivers caught all catchable passes, and the secondary racked up interceptions.

I’d love it if the team came out to play from the get go. Then executed text book well.

Better the end of the third quarter the second and third string played and stayed in to finish the game. They need game experience.

Finally, I want our new kicker to attempt two and make both field goals.

I’m sure the Bengals will have a say.

A few pages back, I posted a link to a new Reuters article on the US economy.

    by UtahFanSir
    2019-07-03 09:53:27

That post generated a number of questions and responses on US income distribution, more specifically on the growing disparity in income and concentration of wealth to the upper 10% and 1%.

While the long term trend has been in the concentration of wealth, the truth is we do not have data past 2015-2016. So we do not actually know if the Trump-GOP tax cut has changed that metric.

See latest from "statista" in US wealth distribution is here, Apri 29, 2019: Wealth distribution in the United States in 2016.

Also see from "statista": Household income distribution in the United States in 2017.

US Census data, overall higher income, but the highest income bracket (e.g., holders of capital) is rising very fast, all others are in decline, inflation adjusted:

We do know that the tax cut benefited disproportionately corporations first and holders of capital in general. The idea around lowering taxes for corporations and the holders of capital comes out of an economic theory called "trickle down economics."

We do know that wages have risen by a few percent in this tighter labor market.

We also know that the Fed has its eye on inflation and labor costs are a major factor to that and one the Fed controls with a variable overnight unsecured bank rate (Fed Funds Rate). So perhaps unwittingly the Fed in effect keeps wages from rising.

The Balance, updated October 2018: Why Trickle Down Economic Works in Theory But Not in Fact — When Trickle-Down Economics Works.

Media Bias for The Balance is virtually dead center. This article is quite informative.

Trickle-down economics is a theory that claims benefits for the wealthy trickle down to everyone else. These benefits are tax cuts on businesses, high-income earners, capital gains, and dividends.

Trickle-down economics assumes investors, savers, and company owners are the real drivers of growth. It promises they’ll use any extra cash from tax cuts to expand businesses. Investors will buy more companies or stocks. Banks will increase lending. Owners will invest in their operations and hire workers. All of this expansion will trickle down to workers. They will spend their wages to drive demand and economic growth.

Republicans continue to use trickle-down economic theory to guide policy.

On December 22, 2017, President Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent beginning in 2018. The top individual tax rate drops to 37 percent. Trump's tax plan cuts income tax rates, doubles the standard deduction, and eliminates personal exemptions. The corporate cuts are permanent while the individual changes expire at the end of 2025.

The Tax Policy Center found that those earning in the top 1 percent would receive a larger tax cut percentage than those in lower income levels. By 2027, those in the lowest 20 percent income levels would pay higher taxes.

Important: Though Trump said it would boost growth enough to make up for the debt increase, the Joint Committee on Taxation reported that the Act would add $1 trillion even after including the tax cut's impact on economic growth. It wouldn't spur growth enough to offset the cuts' loss in revenue.

The article goes into the source for the theory of trickle down economics and uses examples from Reagan to Bush on its success or lack of it. Note, while the GOP adheres tightly to this theory, it is well known among economists that it is being wildly misapplied in the US model. If you want to know why, please read the short article and follow up with its embedded links.

But given this massive tax cut in the name of trickle down economics, do you believe it will be different this time? Yes, it is true, we do not yet have data covering the sitting president's administration. But directionally, given history, do you believe income distribution will narrow now?

    I don't.

Any thoughts from the gallery on chances for Utah to get some of these guys? One shows Utah as where he will end up. The other 4 are projected to go out of state.

Sewell (ILB ) is projected to go to Oregon.

Carlton (SDE) is projected to go to Nebraska.

Fillinger (SDE) is projected to go to Texas or Michigan.

Harrison (OT) is projected to go to Utah.

Ritchie (S) is projected to go to UCLA or Stanford.

    Excellent summary of Utah basketball...

    by UtahFanSir
    2019-06-28 09:59:26

...as far as returning players, incoming recruits, and targets for the next recruiting class.

247Sports: Roster Update: A look at the current state of the Runnin' Utes.

Most of us have been puzzled by recent departures of key pieces to Utah's basketball team. I was anyway, not expecting Jace Johnson or Donny Tillman to so decidedly and quickly seek to play elsewhere. Utah needed those guys, even if it does have great talent coming in.

Of course, we all look to the staff, the head coach in particular, when weird stuff happens. And the turnover now is as terrible as it ever was under Rick Majerus. I know the transfer portal makes it easier and the team may be better off with a player who no longer wants to be a Ute. Yet that fact raises red flags.

At any rate, this summary is superior and it gives us reason to be optimistic.

It seems that K3 always out performs expectations, so what do you expect for the upcoming season?

Why You Can’t Trust Yourself: Even when you think you know for sure, think again.

Bertrand Russell famously said, “The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are so certain of themselves and wiser people so full of doubts.”

Over the years, I’ve hammered on the importance of becoming comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity, in questioning all of your most cherished beliefs and dreams, on practicing skepticism, and doubting everything, most importantly yourself. Throughout these posts, I’ve hinted at the fact that our brains are fundamentally unreliable, that we really have no clue what we’re talking about, even when we think we do, and so on.

Being a question everything kinda guy, this appealed to me at a core level and I thought a few of you would be interested. Got to say, Bertrand Russell nailed it. Know what I mean...

The Day, No The Hour Dinosaurs Died...

    by UtahFanSir
    2019-04-15 00:22:35

The New Yorker: A young paleontologist may have discovered a record of the most significant event in the history of life on Earth.

If, on a certain evening about sixty-six million years ago, you had stood somewhere in North America and looked up at the sky, you would have soon made out what appeared to be a star. If you watched for an hour or two, the star would have seemed to grow in brightness, although it barely moved. That’s because it was not a star but an asteroid, and it was headed directly for Earth at about forty-five thousand miles an hour. Sixty hours later, the asteroid hit. The air in front was compressed and violently heated, and it blasted a hole through the atmosphere, generating a supersonic shock wave. The asteroid struck a shallow sea where the Yucatán peninsula is today. In that moment, the Cretaceous period ended and the Paleogene period began.

The uploaded image below is about the birth of the Utes. You figure out the rest.

Californian by birth into a military family. But I became a Ute in 1969 when I accepted a track scholarship. Have both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Utah.

Basketball, which I did not play, has been a passion since the season of 1969-1970. That season I ran the court at halftime for the Ute games to make sure it was dry and dusted. Jocks had their privileges.
