Seven moral rules that unite humanity...

Comes out of research by an Oxford researcher, seven years in the making.

“I was surprised by how unsurprising it all was,” says Oliver Scott Curry, an anthropology lecturer at the University of Oxford.

The team found that these seven cooperative behaviors were considered morally good in 99.9% of cases across cultures. Curry is careful to note that people around the world differ hugely in how they prioritize different cooperative behaviors. But he said the evidence was overwhelming in widespread adherence to those moral values.

    6A Utah basketball championship game...

    2019-03-03 14:33:06

Deseret News: 6A boys basketball: American Fork pulls away from Pleasant Grove, claims first title since 1979.

    All tournament team:

    Deseret News 6A All-Tournament Team

MVP — Tanner Cuff, American Fork

    Isaac Johnson, American Fork

    Trey Stewart, American Fork

    Casey Brown, Pleasant Grove

    Kael Mikkelsen, Pleasant Grove

    Dallin Hall, Fremont

We know Isaac Johnson is headed to Oregon. Matt Van Komen did not make the all tournament team. Anyone know if another of the other kids mentioned here are seniors? Is Utah interested in any of them?

Fremont's PG Dallin Hall appears to be good player. The 2 star recruit has two scholarship offers, Idaho State and Utah Valley. Any Utah interest?

Any thoughts on Utah vs Colorado on the road on Saturday afternoon?

    by UtahFanSir
    2019-02-28 17:31:07

I think Utah is fighting for an NIT bid, let alone a bye in the Pac-12 tournament. If the guys play defense like Donny Tillman in the last game, the Utes win, particularly if Tillman, PVD and Barefield knock down some 3s.

Colorado is going to come out hot and ready to play. But I expect the Utes to be focused.

I really hope JJ figures out how to use the backboard to help with his FT shots. His D has been terrific over the last few games. And he is scoring better around the basket and hauling in rebounds.

The development of the freshman this season has been awesome. The guys are playing better as a team. PVD and Barefield could be better on D but they are at the end of their tenure at Utah, what is reasonable to expect?

Would be awesome if Timmy Allen can play, he is critical to Utah's D and has a great way of getting to the basket too.

The Buff have been on a roll until their last road trip to Washington. Lucas Siewert and McKinley Wright are players Utah needs to stop. Siewert is a hustler.

Looking forward to the game. Your thoughts?

The ‘Hidden Mechanisms’ That Help Those Born Rich to Excel in Elite Jobs.

I believe the social forces involved are powerful. I've seen for myself in my own career how these forces operate. We want to believe in a pure meritocracy, but typically, the reality falls well short.

Now imagine for a moment. Transport yourself to a different place...where this sums up neatly into the birth lottery we all are part of. Imagine you were born in a urban ghetto or a rural backwater. Black, and put down for generations because of it, or white. From a broken home. Living in severe poverty, mostly. Without access to good nutrition at a young age. In schools that possess the worse teachers. In a community with few prospects, little hope...no money. Sure we are all responsible for ourselves at some point. But...

How far are you likely to go?

    Pac-12 Grades are in...

    by UtahFanSir
    2018-12-07 12:11:44

Goe: Final grades are in for Pac-12 football, and the Washington Huskies lead the list.

    Excerpt: Utah (9-4, 6-3) B

The Utes had a slow start, picked up momentum in the middle of the season and then weathered the kind of misfortune that might have derailed another team when they lost their starting quarterback and running back in the same game.

Defense and special teams can take you a long ways. The lack of firepower finally caught up with Utah against Washington in the conference title game.

    Midterm grade: B

In Santa Clara...its a good day for the Utes to battle the Huskies...

    by UtahFanSir
    2018-11-30 09:09:13

Washington and Utah are so similar statistically. We know both are tops in their respective divisions, both have the same records. Utah has one more conference loss. Both are known for their defenses.

But Washington’s offense is intact. Gaskins is a great running back. If Utah had Moss, that would put them near even in my book. But Utah is running with Shyne and Green. While both are quite serviceable, Green is young, and Shyne is reliable at hitting the hole that the OL is supposed to have created. He runs with his head down. Moss on the other hand, finds the seam no matter where its supposed to be. So Shyne and Green need stellar nights, lead by Utah’s OL. Utah's OL needs to play lights out.

The passing game: Browning vs Shelley. Browning has four years of college QB experience. He started as a Freshman. This is his last game in Pac-12 competition. He is very good. He knows how to win, as we witnessed in Seattle last season against Utah. Shelley has started four games if you include the one to be played today. He is a RS Freshman. I love the kid, and while he started as a HS QB as a Freshman, its not the same.

Troy Taylor will I believe put Jason in the best position to run a game plan to his strengths. Utah’s receivers, many inexperienced relatively speaking, need to have an error free night.

Utah’s D will need to be nearly mistake free. No targeting calls. They must disrupt Browning’s ability to find open receivers. The front seven for Utah need to find a performance to top performances. Bulldozer good against another terrific OL.

I expect Utah to win because that is what I want. 24-21. To seal the victory, Matt Gay kicks a record setting 60-yard FG with time running out.

    Go Utes!

ESPN preview of each conference championship game...Pac12

    by UtahFanSir
    2018-11-29 18:13:03

Here's everything you need to know about this weekend's Power 5 conference title games.

    Pac-12

    Washington vs. Utah
    8 p.m. ET Friday, Fox

Player to watch for Utah: LB Chase Hansen. How many Defensive Player of the Year candidates are converted quarterbacks? After switching from quarterback to safety early in his career, Hansen made another move this offseason to linebacker. The position change has allowed him to impact the game even more than before. He ranks fourth nationally in tackles for loss.

Player to watch for Washington: RB Myles Gaskin. Gaskin is one of just five players in Pac-12 history to rush for more than 5,000 yards in his career and the first to rush for more than 1,000 yards in four straight seasons. Despite the production, Gaskin has managed to go widely underappreciated. In the first game against Utah, he had one of his most important games of the season, rushing for 143 yards on 30 carries.

X factor for Utah: Does Kyle Whittingham's bowl magic exist in all postseason games? His 11-1 bowl record is a huge source of pride at Utah, so while there isn't an extended amount of time to prepare for this game, Utes fans will be hopeful that success translates to conference championship games, too.

X factor for Washington: Soon enough, every physical attribute Jake Browning has is going to face intense scrutiny as he tries to extend his career at the next level. As a college player, few have been as important in a program's rise. Washington had not won 10 games in a season since 2000 but is now a win away from winning at least 10 in three straight seasons. Browning doesn't always make it look pretty, but he keeps finding ways to help his team win.

Matchup that will decide the game: Utah QB Jason Shelley vs. UW secondary. In three games since coming out of the backup role, Shelly has been good enough, but he hasn't seen a secondary nearly as good as Washington's. The Utes' worst offensive showing of the season came against the Huskies, and if they're forced to become one-dimensional, it will be especially tough to win against Washington.

    They said it

Washington coach Chris Petersen: "They just really haven't flinched, and that's what I'm proud of. I don't know how to handle this expectation thing because expectation can be the kiss of death. I think it adds pressure on those guys. I think they've worked hard."

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham: "It has been an exciting journey. Like I've said many times, when we joined the Pac-12, it was like getting a new job. Everything was different. The bar was raised in virtually every area, and coming from a Group of 5 to the Power 5 is a huge undertaking, I think bigger than most people realize. I think we did it the right way."

    Kyle Bonagura

    More on Larry Scott

    2018-11-29 10:29:16

More problems for Pac-12's Larry Scott; what to make of Oregon State in 2018? Issues & Answers.

    On to important stuff:

The major key to victory tomorrow for Utah; score more points than Washington.

Utah has yet to put together a complete game. Utah has started slow in virtually every game this year, except for WSU. Utah has spotted most opponents this year a TD or two, based solely on muffs of one sort or another. Utah has had the most untimely penalties to stall critical drives. The D has given up in almost every game a play or two that proved critical for its opponent to score. To beat Washington, clean up known lapses.

Also, I expect KW et al. to have masterminded a great game plan. Furthermore, the coaches and team leaders have sharpened the focus of every player on all aspects of the game to produce a win.

    Officiating...

A look inside the beleaguered Pac-12 instant-replay command center, where Woodie Dixon is still a central figure.

In response to some calls during the WSU-USC game...

Excerpt: Reporters continue to ask the Pac-12 Conference about the lack of transparency. Some fans lost faith and wonder how many other games were affected by similar meddling. And while conference coaches are deterred from speaking publicly by fines, some of them have privately wondered if the conference is trying to steer the outcome of games to protect its most valued programs.

ESPN's weekly "Top 25 takeaways: How Week 13 affects the CFP and more..."

    by UtahFanSir
    2018-11-25 12:58:40

    No. 17 Utah 35, BYU 27

The Utes had to rally from 20 points down in the third quarter to hold off their hated in-state rival for the eighth straight time. Utah barely overcame its sloppy, uninspired start, which included a pair of special teams miscues that led directly to two BYU touchdowns. It's also clear that the loss of starting quarterback Tyler Huntley is finally taking a toll as the Utes finished with only 296 yards of offense. In Jason Shelley's third start, he completed 19 passes for only 141 yards. A repeat of Saturday night's performance could get them blown out in Friday's Pac-12 championship game against Washington. -- Anderson

That is a curious take. Yes, the Utes were sloopy. They were not prepared and likely looking past BYU. To me the main takeaway is the recovery. Pulling out a win from where the team was late in the 3rd Q: that was amazing. The team learned something about themselves. That will pay dividends in the coming week at a minimum.

Honestly, I am still in a state of shock over the rapid change in events over the last week. I have no idea what to expect tomorrow. At times like this, you wish the 2nd and 3rd string guys had more reps. And you wonder how a critical player like Moss gets hurt in practice. Oh well, I'm trusting the team to rally. Coaches to have been laser focused all week. And Shelley and Shyne to have a banner game.

The uploaded image below is about the birth of the Utes. You figure out the rest.

Californian by birth into a military family. But I became a Ute in 1969 when I accepted a track scholarship. Have both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Utah.

Basketball, which I did not play, has been a passion since the season of 1969-1970. That season I ran the court at halftime for the Ute games to make sure it was dry and dusted. Jocks had their privileges.
