    The Citizenship of Keith Byrne

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2019-07-19 13:54:11

This post is not intended to bitch about ICE or immigration policies in general. Everybody has his or her own opinion, and this is not intended to start a debate about that.

But if there ever was a case where ANY decent human being can agree that ICE got it wrong, it is the imminent deportation of Irishman Keith Byrne. If it proceeds as planned, it will either tear apart a happy Irish guy loves American gal family, or uproot it from its American home.

Keith Byrne never got his citizenship, and is about to be deported back to Ireland, because of two charges of possession of marijuana some 15 years ago in Ireland. Charges he was truthful about in his application for citizenship. Charges which could cost him everything he has lived for since marrying his American wife.

In more than 10 years of living a life in the US with a perfect record, he established a family, a home for his family and a business.

Being German by birth but Irish by heart and a friend of America, this case makes me sad and angry at the same time. There has to be some humanitarian way to let Keith Byrne stay in the US to just live his life.

Even if you've never seen a minute of Hurling...

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2019-04-01 09:38:15

...and don't understand a single word of the commentary (the language is Irish), you have to appreciate the execution of the drive and the beauty of the goal:

Aaron Gillane scores a brilliant one for Limerick

Also, one cannot fail to acknowledge the bravery of the goalies in Hurling.

"to vandyke", verb - to beat an opponent in sports at (literally or figuratively) the last second

Did you see that game when Utah vandyked UCLA? That was epic.

20-19? Rarely did a football team vandyke itself as BYU did in that game.

Interesting observation regarding the CFP championship game

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2019-01-08 01:44:18

In the five CFP finals so far, it has always been the lower ranked team that won the game - #4 Ohio State over #2 Oregon, #2 Alabama over #1 Clemson, #2 Clemson over #1 Alabama, #4 Alabama over #3 Georgia and again #2 Clemson over #1 Alabama.

Which also means that the team ranked as #1 has never won the championship game so far during the playoff era.

Okay, now for something completely different... Books you would recommend?

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2018-12-08 14:35:23

A thread which might come handy for the upcoming Christmas season, both to complement your own wish list and to give you gift ideas.

Which books would you wholeheartedly recommend to others? Fiction, non-fiction... doesn't matter.

As a start, here is my list.

Fernando Aramburu: "Homeland" (English edition scheduled for early next year)

    Graham Norton: "Holding"

Anthony Doerr: "All the Light We Cannot See"

Siddhartha Mukherjee: "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer" & "The Gene: An Intimate History"

Philip Pullman: "His Dark Materials" (a trilogy)

Ben Aaronovitch: "Rivers of London" (a 7 volume series so far)

    John Williams: "Butcher's Crossing"

Karen Thompson Walker: "The Age of Miracles"

    Brian Panowich: "Bull Mountain"

Donald Ray Pollock: "The Devil All the Time"

And last but not least, one that is only relevant for chess players:

Jeremy Silman: "How to Reassess Your Chess: Chess Mastery Through Imbalances"

    The silver lining is...

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2018-11-03 17:11:08

...that not all is lost, yet.

If the Utes win out their remaining conference schedule against Oregon and Colorado, they would have a win as tie-breaker against any other possible 3-loss South team except ASU.

And ASU has three conference game left after today's game, two of them on the road. All that would be needed is one loss out of these three.

The most important thing right now is that Tyler Huntley is back at full health for the games against Oregon and Colorado.

Yesterday, former Ute Quade Chappuis won the German Bowl...

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2018-10-15 12:52:21

...which is, one might guess, the final of the German Football League.

It was in his fifth GFL season with his third team, defending champion Schwäbisch-Hall Unicorns, after the Dresden Monarchs (2014, 2015) and Frankfurt Universe (2016, 2017). Both of his seasons with Dresden and one of his Frankfurt seasons ended in the semi-final.

    Just saying.

SI's Sports Highlight of the Weekend...

    by UtahFan from Germany
    2018-07-31 03:42:37

...comes from the wonderful sport of Hurling, the national pastime of Ireland. Even if you've never heard about Hurling, you have to admire the athleticism and fearlessness of the goalie:

This Outrageous Hurling Save Was the Sports Highlight of the Weekend

I've watched the full game on sunday via livestream, rooting for Limerick, and this was one of the moments that made me cheer out loud. Brilliant save that made the difference.

Oh, and these guys play in front of 70,000+ while being true amateurs with full-time day jobs. The passion of the Irish .
