What can we expect from the 2018 OL?

    by UTEopia
    2018-06-09 15:07:03

The 2017 OL lacked experience with only 1 returning full-time starter and 1 additional player with starting experience. 2018 finds us with 4 returning full-time starters (Barton, Falamaka, Agasiva and Paulo and 2 others (Havili-Katoa and Toala) with significant playing time. Experience along the OL alone should allow the Ute offense to be more productive in 2018 than 2017.

Offensive line is a position group that requires players to communicate and rely on one another in order to be effective. The only way to build the trust that leads to success is by playing together. I don’t think this group has the same level of talent as the 2016 group, but with a year under their belts, they should show improvement and greater productivity. Hopefully that will lead to more success, particularly in the redzone, where the Utes struggled in 2017.

I anticipate that the starters going into the season will consist of 3 seniors Barton LT, Falamaka C and Agasiva RG and 2 juniors Paulo RT and Capra LG. Capra will be pushed by senior Havili-Katoa and junior Toala and Paulo/Barton will be pushed by redshirt freshman Nick Ford, who by all accounts made great strides in spring ball. If, Falamaka sustains an injury, I believe Capra will move over to center.

The only upperclassman who has not found his way onto the field is junior Keven Dixon and with 4 senior OL, it will be important for the coaches to develop underclassmen Jake Grant (So), Tucker Scott (So), Orlando Umama (So), Mo Unatoa (RsFr), returned missionary and former Oregon St. signee Simi Moala and true freshman Braeden Daniels.

On the recruiting front, the Utes anticipate that highly regarded 2016 signee Johnny Maea will return for 2019. According to Scout, the sole current verbal commitment is from Lucas Child, an OL from Timpview. The Utes have offered about 25 offensive linemen and OL should be an area of emphasis in what should be a small recruiting class as the Utes have only 11 or 12 scholarship seniors.

If anyone is interested in any of these items, you can send me a text at 801-718-4837 and I can send you photos. I live in Holladay. Please don't text if you aren't interested. If the rumors of DC leaving are true, there could be a number of different reasons: 1) the offense is terrible and getting worse and KW has seen enough, 2) the current players can't stand him and will leave if he returns, 3) he doesn't feel like he g

feel like he has the control over the offense that he wants. Now I don't know if the rumors are true or not, but possible reasons 1 and 2 are significantly different than possible reasons 3 and 4. The truth is that none of us will ever know for sure what the exact reason might be and my guess is that if he is let go it will be done in such a way that he is allowed a graceful exit. So if it happens, don't jump to conclusions.

I seem to remember that Ole Miss signed 35 guys a few years back and that the result was some sort of limit to 28 or 29. I see that Texas A&M has 34 commits and Georgia 30 and am wondering if they can sign all of those kids.

    surge. Things I liked:

Points in the paint. I don't know if they keep this stat in college, but the Utes got some good looks and made them count.

Moving Feet. The Utes switched back and forth from man to zone and I thought that for the most part the players stayed in front of their guys and did not jump out of position.

Patience. For the most part the Utes were patient on the offensive end and did not try to force things. At one point Dean made two mistakes in a row and he was quickly placed on the bench and Taylor came in and did a credible job. I

Substitutions. In addition to Dean and Taylor, I liked the way LK used Washburn since he was more effective then Bach.

Still a lot of work left to be done and the next 3 games will give us a great indication of where this team is. I thought the game tonight was clearly a step in the right direction. Let's hope that it is not a case of one step forward and two steps back.

How would you grade Utah position groups based on expectations?

    by UTEopia
    2012-11-13 18:52:35

DL - I think most of us expected this group to be dominant. IMO, they have been average at best. Expectation - A; Performance - C

LB - Although I think we hoped otherwise, I think most expected this inexperienced group to suffer some growing pain. They have been inconsistent. Expectation - C; Performance - C

DB - Next to DL, I think we expected this group to be the next best group. Like the DL, I think they have been average at best. Expectation - B+, Performance - C

QB - I think we all hoped that JWynn would have a great year and that Hays and Wilson would see only mop up duty. Our hopes were definitely misguided. Expectations - B; Performance - C-

OL - See LB. I think Finn has probably done the most with the least amount of talent. Expectations - C; Performance - D up from an F earlier in the term and with a chance to finish at a C.

    RB - See DB. White's injury, York's injury, OL struggles. Expectation - B+; Performance - C

WR - IMO the most disappointing offensive group. I think the potential here is very high, but drops, missed blocks, etc result in this group being almost as disappointing to me as the DL. Expectation - B+; Performance - C-

Special Teams - Special teams has been pretty good overall. KOR has been solid, K Coverage has been solid, punt team has been very good. Punt return has been ok. I think I expected B and we have received about a B.

    My stars

    by UTEopia
    2012-09-16 19:25:01

    1. defensive coaches for changing the defense from the traditional 4-3 to a 3 man front. I thought it put our best defensive personnel in the game and they responded big time. Star was so much better last night then in any game last year. He ran down plays from sideline to sideline. We need to get the same kind of performance and effort from the Krugers every game. They were all monsters. I loved the decision to put Boo and Filiaga in the game as they are probably our best run stoppers. It hurt us a little in middle coverage of the TE, but it was designed to make Nelson beat us with his arm. Overall, a great defensive adjustment and great execution.

    2. Kudos to Tyrone Morris-Edwards. He did not appear to be out of position and was a sure tackler. It is great to see guys step up and perform when they are given the opportunity.

    3. Offensive coaches for finding a way to get the ball to Reggie Dunn in space and to Reggie for catching and taking care of the ball. Getting the ball to the FB's to help relieve pressure and take advantage of BYU stacking the box.

    4. John Hays is a tough guy. He took some wicked hits and kept standing back there and for the most part giving the receivers the opportunity to make catches. He showed a lot more presence then he had a year ago by not trying to do too much and then making a mistake.

    5. The crowd was energized and had an impact in the game. We need to bring that the rest of the year.

We still have a long way to go, but the performance last night shows what can happen when you play with effort and energy.

    by UTEopia
    2011-09-02 16:25:51

I'm not suggesting that the offense doesn't need improvement. It does. Personally, I would rather have the offense watch this film and understand that a lot of work needs to be done than I would have them look at a 50 point output thinking they have it all figured out. At the end of the year, the score of this game will be meaningless.

Anyone who thought we would breeze through this schedule was kidding themselves. There is not a game on the schedule that we cannot win and not a game that we cannot lose. The days when you could look at the schedule in advance and identify 5 or 6 in the bag wins is over.

no illegal procedures, delays or too many on the field
    no dropped passes
    no turnovers

    Defense:

    no big plays
    2+ turnovers

    Special Teams:
A couple of gimme FG attempts to build confidence
    1 big play
    no big plays against

How will the PAC 12 South play out?

    by UTEopia
    2011-07-13 13:51:38

While I believe that the PAC 12 will be much more difficult then most of us believe, Utah has been provided with some scheduling benefits that we must take advantage of this year.

With 5 Pac 12 home games, Utah, USC and ASU have a scheduling advantage when compared to Arizona, CU and UCLA, who have only 4 home games. Utah has an additional advantage in that they do not play Stanford and Oregon, while Arizona plays both at home, ASU misses Stanford and plays Oregon on the road, CU plays Stanford on the road and Oregon at home, and UCLA misses Oregon and plays Stanford on the road. Both Arizona and UCLA have an additional disadvantage of not playing WSU, who must be considered one of the weaker teams in the conference.

So, how will all this play out? I think it will take 7-2 with a win over ASU for the Utes to win the south.

Arizona plays Stanford and Oregon in weeks 3 and 4 and then travels to USC and OSU. My guess is that they might go 0-4 and more probably 1-3. They end the season with UCLA coming off a bye, @ UW, Utah, @CU, @ ASU. If they beat Utah and UCLA at home, my guess is that they lose to UW and ASU and possibly at CU. My guess is that Arizona ends up 4-5.

ASU starts out with USC and OSU at home and then travel to Utah and Oregon. I think they win the two home games and lose the two road games. After a bye they end the season with CU coming off a bye, @ UCLA, @ WSU, Arizona and Cal. They probably go 5-0 to end the season and finish 7-2.

CU starts out with WSU, @ Stanford, @ UW, Oregon and @ ASU. I think they go 1-4 in this stretch. They end the year with USC, Arizona, @ UCLA and @ Utah. They could go 0-4 in these games, but my guess is they beat either Arizona or UCLA and go 1-3 to end the year 2-7.

UCLA starts at OSU, @ Stanford, WSU @ Arizona coming off a bye. I believe they start 1-3. They finish with Cal, ASU, @ Utah, CU and @ USC. I think they beat Cal and CU and finish 3-6.

USC - although USC is ineligible for the championship game, their play will go a long way to determining who represents the south. They start with Utah, @ ASU, Arizona and @Cal coming off a bye. I think they go 3-1 with the sole loss to ASU. It would be great to have them beat ASU, but I don’t think they do it. They finish with Stanford, @CU, UW, @ Oregon and UCLA. They lose to Stanford and Oregon, but unless they have totally tanked beat the others and finish 6-3.

Utah - @ USC, Wash. after a bye, ASU and @ Cal after a long road trip to Pitt. I think we lose to USC and beat Wash. and ASU. The Cal game scares the pants off me because of the long road trip the week before, but I will call this a win. We finish with OSU, @ Arizona, UCLA, @ WSU and CU. I think we go 4-1, losing to Arizona and finish tied with ASU at 7-2.

The difference in NCAA basketball money distributions to conferences is eye opening

    by UTEopia
    2011-03-20 17:41:14

The following chart sets forth the distributions for the period 05-10. I believe each unit refers to each game a conference team plays and currently has a value of about 240k. So, for example, next year, the MWC will lose 4 units and gain a minimum of 7 (3 games for both BYU and SDSU and 1 game for UNLV). The rich get richer and the poor stay the same.

    http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/3b09b 5004e0d54799ef1fe1ad6fc8b25/2011+Basketbal l+Fund+Distribution.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CACHEI D=3b09b5004e0d54799ef1fe1ad6fc8b25

    Of interest:
    Big East: 26.1 million
    Big 12: 18.9
    ACC: 18.6
    Big 10: 18.4
    Pac 10: 16
    Big 12: 15.5
    MWC: 5

    WAC: 2.8

Just saw the increase on my tickets for next year. My CC is going up $100 per ticket and my tickets are going up $55.00, so instead of paying 370.00 per seat I will be paying 525.00 . I'm no math major, but that is about a 40% increase.

    by UTEopia
    2011-02-04 13:00:21

Fortunately, I will be able to handle it, but I am sure there will be a good share of people who will not be able to absorb an increase. It will be interesting to see what the increase does to season ticket sales and to the general revenue of the athletic department.

not sure Utah would be 16-1 with Jimmer, they would probably only have 2 or 3 losses at the most. The guy is a great college basketball player. He is the kind of player I want on my team. He makes everyone on their team better. The fact is that BYU is better then the sum of its part while Utah is not as good as the sum of its parts. IMO, that is the difference that coaching makes.

Oregon needs a new OC. If they had a better OC, their linemen would block better and they could run the ball. I know that is it because when our linemen don't block worth crap and we can't run the ball it is because the OC is terrible.

    by UTEopia
    2011-01-10 21:25:30

We need a few more players with more speed on both sides of the ball and we will be fine. We lost to 1 top 5 team and 1 top 10 team and a game that I think we win any other week of the year, although ND ended the season strong.

I am bullish on Utah football and on our coaches. They work hard. They get more accomplished with less money than most programs around the country. They get their players to work hard and to play hard.

    Go Utes!
