I've seen some discussion that the new QB, Rising, may seek a waiver from the NCAA to allow him to play next season.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2019-01-18 15:21:01

He wanted to study Criminal Justice but Texas eliminated that program after he signed his letter of intent. Or could be he found a loophole, found that Texas eliminated a program, said yeah that's the major I wanted, I'll have my year back since ya screwed me.

I wonder if Ludwig already knew this was in the works and if Rising is his guy, kind of like Tommy Grady was his guy. Remember how BJ redshirted so Grady could get a chance in 2006? That was weird.

The Remarkable Longevity of University of Utah Football Coaches.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2019-01-10 15:33:45

    Urban Meyer
    Ron McBride
    Jim Fassel
    Chuck Stobart
    Wayne Howard
    Tom Lovat
    Bill Meek
    Mike Giddings
    Ray Nagel
    Jack Curtice
    Ike Armstrong

Ike Armstrong will always be Utah's greatest football coach. Thirteen conference championships and a .700 win percentage. Nobody will ever touch that. He started coaching at the U in the 20s.

Other than Ike, Jack Curtice, and Bill Meek, the rest of Utah's former head coaches are all still alive. Really quite remarkable. People joke about taking Ludwig back or Jim Fassel...no we could hire Mike Giddings if we wanted to, former Head Coach from the 60s.

Raul Lopez is coaching...not sure why he doesn't suit up, he'd get more assists than Exum.

Why can’t we admit Zach Wilson is a really good QB? He hasn’t beat anyone? Look at his teammates. He nearly beat us with running backs and receivers who wouldn’t even make it as walkons at the U.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-12-21 20:29:49

If Zach Wilson had our O-line, Moss, and Covey, he’d beat a lot of good teams. Our coaches really screwed up not offering him and I guarantee it’s going to be a battle to beat him the next three years just as it was this year.

Jim Boylen has already screwed up his unbelievably lucky chance at a HC job in the NBA

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-12-09 17:09:37

Subbed out all 5 starters 2 minutes into the second half after Boston went on a 5-3 run. Biggest blowout in franchise history ensued and the players refused to show up to practice afterwards.

    Update:

Jim Boylen's antics are becoming a big story in the NBA. This will be fun to watch. The record for most consecutive losses in a single season is 26 games. I expect Boylen to make a good run at setting this record, along with making a run at the record for biggest blowout, 68 points, set by the Miami Heat in 1991.

    https://deadspin.com/report-obnoxious-har dman-jim-boylen-nearly-drove-the-b-183098 2 599

Jim Boylen pulled his starters from a game so they'd be rested for practice the next day. LOL.

Could this be the last Holiday Bowl in Jack Murphy Stadium?

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-12-03 13:01:42

I read that the Padres had offered the Holiday Bowl a deal to play at Petco Field. Not sure what has become of it.

Jack Murphy Stadium is an interesting place. Now home to only SDSU; I wonder what will become of the stadium, it seems to big for SDSU to maintain. The Holiday Bowl is a great bowl game, very glad we'll be a part of its histry.

I'd like to see BJ come back next year as OC. He's had success at Florida, worked with several outstanding offensive coaches. I'm over Troy Taylor. BJ loves the U and would ball out.

Jack Tuttle, Zach Wilson, Aaron Roderick, Jason Shelley, and Tyler Huntley

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-26 16:43:41

Thank God the current Utah staff was not about to allow Jack Tuttle's dad influence decisions with playing time. We would have suffered our worse loss in 30 years to BYU had Tuttle started instead of Shelley. Dodged a big bullet there.

I was annoyed when I read that we weren't offering Zach Wilson because Jack Tuttle insisted we only sign one QB. Sounds like this is actually quite common with 4 and 5 star QBs, their parents get to make some demands, it's up to coaches to decide whether the player is worth conceding to those demands.

Aaron Roderick recruited Tuttle, and was the QB coach and offensive coordinator. Roderick should have known whether Tuttle was worth making that kind of concession and whether Zack Wilson was worth signing and risking Tuttle leaving. Kyle Whittingham trusts his offensive staff to make those evaluations.Kyle Whittingham won't even say Tuttle's name, he's obviously not pleased with how it played out.

Zach Wilson looks to have the full package, looks a lot like Alex Smith. He had some better offers than BYU, including Syracuse, Minnesota, and Boise State, obviously a lot of factors other than football went into him choosing BYU. Once he's played in front of his family and friends a couple years, he's going to want to go to a real football school. Wilson will likely graduate early from BYU and have one or two years remaining to transfer wherever he chooses, and I hope Utah remains one of his first choices.

I'd be reluctant to sit Jason Shelley when Tyler Huntley comes back if Shelley is still on a roll and continues to not turn the ball over. The defense is outstanding, interceptions and fumbles were the only way we'd lose to Oregon, CU, and BYU. Had we not muffed that opening punt against BYU, I think we win no problem, it threw everyone off. The TD catch and run Huntley caught from Covey earlier this season really caught my eye, I was surprised how natural Huntley looked as a receiver, caught the ball and turned up field without slowing down...I think he'd be better than 75% of our WRs right out of the gate, if he only played 4 games as a WR next season and came back for a full season in 2020 as a WR I think he'd be a star. Not so sure at QB.

I’ve done a complete 180 on the rivalry

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-25 22:04:00

I was of the opinion that we should cut BYU from the schedule entirely. I’ve changed that opinion, i now want them scheduled every season, last game of the season. Several reasons:

The nastiness of the rivalry ended when Bronco left. I no longer see cheap shots to the head and all around douchebaggery by BYU players and even fans. I really enjoyed my interactions with BYU fans the last three seasons.

The game does matter. No there’s no official championship won by the game, but the streak we have now is hugely important, I want to keep the streak going as much as I want division championships.

This morning I read a story on coug board about a father of a twelve year old boy who went to bed at halftime thinking BYU had won. The father was struggling with how to break the news to the boy. I exchanged a few friendly boardmails with the father and received a detailed account of the boy’s reaction. We don’t get moments like these from beating any of our conference rivals. No PAC 12 fan base is even remotely as entertaining, it’s not even close. Do USC or CU fans literally cry when we beat them? No. There’s just so much joy in winning the Holy War, and we’re so good at it. I want to end the season this way every year.

I tried to get my four buddies together in the bathroom to shower a boy with urine but they chickened out. Five guys peeing on a boy is a difficult one to beat or even match. But we’ll see. I thought pushing a handicapped child down the stairs couldn’t be out done and I was wrong.

Damn I feel terrible for UCF's QB; horrific dislocated knee, emergency surgery to correct damaged blood flow.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-24 01:48:00

I've read that it's critical for a dislocated knee or ankle to be popped back into place quickly. How likely is it that a team trainer has ever had to do such a thing? The UCF QB's leg looked so completely deformed, I wouldn't even know where to start.

The tackle was made straight at his knee, I'm actually surprised we're not seeing more dislocated knees given the targeting rules.

I know I'm jumping ahead when we still have plenty of football left, but next season is looking very good.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-20 18:20:12

    Schedule:

Home games: ASU, CU, UCLA, Cal, Wazzu
Away games: USC, Arizona, Oregon State, Washington

Six of those nine games seem like certain wins right now. ASU, Wazzu, and Washington are tossups. I'm not going to even mention our non-conference schedule, it's irrelevant and poor quality. But if we could get that elusive 7th PAC 12 win, I think we're guaranteed an NY6 bowl for possibly the 2nd consecutive season. If we win two of the three games that I see as tossups, I think we're in the playoff discussion going into the championship game.

    Roster:

    QB - Huntley/Shelley
    RB - Shyne, Green
    WR - Dixon/Mariner/Thompson
    WR - Covey/Simpkins/Boyd
    WR - Enis/Nacua/Perriman
    TE - Kuithe/Fotheringham/Jackson
    T - Ford
    G - Toala/Moala
    C - Umana
    G - Unutoa/Dixon
    T - Paulo/Capra

Kickers - new plug in Australian from pipeline.

    DE - Anae/Repp
    DT - Fotu/Pututau/Cravens
    DT - Penisini/Tonga
    DE - Tupai/Tafua
    LB - Bernard
    LB - Thompson/Fabrizio
    NB - Guidry
    CB - Lewis/Blackmon
    CB - Johnson/Nurse
    S - Burgess
    S - Afia

Very few holes to fill, need a couple of O-linemen to emerge. I don't see a huge dropoff with Bernard at LB, would be nice if Fabrizio filled in the other spot to keep some of the height and speed we've had at the position.

If Shelley continues to play mistake free and looks comfortable throwing from the pocket, I'd like to see Huntely switch to WR and play just 4 games next year to learn the position and set himself up to be a star WR in 2020 with a future in the NFL.

I think we'll move a couple of the WR to DB, probably Thompson and Boyd.

My personal battle with Troy Taylor’s playcalling.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-17 09:21:13

So I called Troy Taylor some nasty things at the game last week. My seats are high enough he couldn’t have heard me. But the fans in front of me turned around and appeared to be upset.

I rewatched the game and it was a great win, especially considering the circumstances. I should be very happy about it.

My personal battle is that on three different occasions we had 1st and goal from inside the 5 and came away with just field goals.

Four downs to get three yards. 3/4=0.75, let’s go shotgun and start 5 yards behind scrimmage and go from there.

Four downs to get two yards. 2/4=0:5, let’s go shotgun and start 5 yards behind scrimmage, but the direct snap to Shyne didn’t work last time so let’s try our 4th string running back who is 5’7”, a different height than the center is accustomed to snapping to. What could go wrong?

Four downs to get four yards 4/4=1 yard per play. How about a shotgun snap again!

Do we have a QB sneak in the play book?? It’s 90% effective at getting 1 yard or more and I’ve never seen it lose yards.

Just felt I needed to get that poop out so I can enjoy the game and not $#!+ my pants if we snap the ball over our runningback’s head on 1st and goal from the 2 yard line in snowy conditions.

You know you've arrived into elite social status if you're watching athletic events by yourself next to a small table and matching stool.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-14 12:46:11

I participated in this scene at a Jazz game. The environment is quiet, clean, unoffensive and sterile. It's not for me, it's like watching a game at home without comfortable furniture and unlimited Zima. The table and stool is a nice way to spend the 15 minute halftime, but if you've made the effort to be apart of the Table and Stool scene, you're going to want to use it during a significant amount of game time too.

Thanks to The Incident the bathroom urinal and stall availability will always be virtually limitless in the North Endzone. NEZ will always be the best area of the stadium.

Backwards flat-bill caps, guys with shaven heads, huge arms, oversized watches, light blue golf shirts and several spritzes of cologne...mmmm, what a scene. Buy some Pepsi to put on those tables. Looks really nice.

    New redshirt rule question

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-13 14:25:08

Could seniors who haven't used their redshirt year use their redshirt year next season and play in four games?

For example, the Barton brothers. Neither of them have used their redshirt year. Why can't they redshirt next season? Seems fair and reasonable.

It's going to be beautiful football weather for the 3pm kickoff Saturday. I'm liking our chances. Looking forward to watching second half of UCLA vs ASU in the tailgate lot. Good times are afoot.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-06 15:41:11

Oregon's offensive line continues to have trouble with injuries and now their Center is out for the first half due to a targeting penalty. I think our defense will force some turnovers and our offense will be improved after Whittingham forces Taylor to play a simplified offense consisting of handing the ball off to Moss.

I'm less angry today. Been thinking it over, before the season I thought we'd lose 2 of 3 to Washington, Wazzu, and Stanford. And I thought we'd lose to either ASU and USC. I'd rather lose to ASU than USC because USC has an easier schedule. If we beat Oregon, we'll be in good shape, right where I thought we'd be, in position for our first South Division championship.

I think UCLA may upset ASU and CAL will defeat USC, leaving us and Arizona in a two-way tie going into a week where we play CU and Arizona plays Wazzu and we hold the tiebreaker anyway. We're all going to be extremely happy this weekend.

    The South Division Remaining Schedules

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-05 10:16:29

Utah: Oregon, at CU. Could lose one or both with backup QB.

USC: Cal, UCLA. Could win both, could lose both.

Arizona: Washington State, ASU. Will likely lose both.

ASU: UCLA, at Oregon, at Arizona. Hard to imagine them winning all three.

UCLA: Arizona State, USC. Lij et ky lose both.

CU: Wazzu, Utah, Cal. They lose one of three and they're done. They're done.

In summary, I think 3 teams basically have roughly equal odds; USC, Utah, and ASU.

Damn I wish we'd just hand the ball off to Moss without making the QB make a read. Starting QB or not, it seems it takes just one bad read to ruin a drive. Line up in that under-center Rams formation and Ram it.

A few things about University of Maine basketball, our regular season opener next week.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-11-01 12:18:16

The University of Maine (Black Bears) holds its basketball games in Alfond Arena which seats 5,124 people, quite large given the town, Orono, only has 10,000 residents. Hillary Clinton appeared in this arena in 1994.

Richard Barron is in his first season as head coach. He previously coached U of Maine's Women's basketball program for seven seasons.

Last season the Black Bears had some turmoil, players fighting and breaking each other's jaws, which one may assume led to their previous coach being dismissed.
    https://deadspin.com/maine-basketball-pla yer-breaks-teammates-jaw-after-figh-17926 9 7338

University of Maine is also known for having very lewd fans.
    https://deadspin.com/umaine-fans-sign-fea tures-opposing-mascot-sucking-a-dic-16820 1 2025

The most recognizable former Black Bear player is former U of U Head Coach Jim Boylen who is still 6th in assists in the All-time records book at U of Maine.

The Black Bears have never been invited to the NCAA Tournament.

What's up with Utah Right to Know?

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-10-23 22:56:57

It was once very easy to find criminal records of all Utah residents. It was as easy as googling "Utah Right to Know", go to the first site that came up, type in the person's first and last name and it pulled up their entire criminal record.

I'm not finding it anymore. There's some redirect to a court records site that is undergoing maintenance.

Maybe I'm missing something, does anyone know if it exists?

Lost in the beatdown we laid on OCgreg's Trojans was that once again the PAC 12 refs were biased against us and then went home and beat their wives.

    by The Stadium Pooper
    2018-10-21 17:28:59

When is our new AD or Kyle Whittingham going to step up and address this? Mike Leach at least sent some texts. If we address it now after a blowout win, it can't come across as sour grapes.

The calls are bad enough it will lead to us losing another game we should win. Trojans were only called for two penalties despite obvious holds, targeting, horse-collar tackles out of bounds, etc.

I'm astonished the admitted corruption within the PAC 12's own replay booth has not been a bigger story, and has not led to our new AD demanding fairness and Larry Scott's resignation. What's the point of building new facilities to lure top athletes if the conference's execs and refs are allowed to steer the outcome of games?

    (12 days ago, 0 stars)

    Pure jibberish, way to go.
    (12 days ago, 0 stars)

I wonder if the guy we have lined up for OC now takes a look at USC?
    (13 days ago, 1 stars)

I wonder if the coaches may look at moving Blackmon to safety. He's good at reading the QB, and our other corners have better straight away speed to defend the deep passes.
    (13 days ago, 0 stars)

He made some huge plays when we beat ASU a couple years ago.

Trevor Lawrence is like a right handed John F'ing Elway with long red hair.
    (14 days ago, 1 stars)

How many extra points did our kicker doink off the upright like a sad sack of poop? When we played Alabama all their players and fans had the same exact dopey haircut and we tore through them like a Category 5 hurricane. F th

Didn't read, I'm actually waiting to read who our OC will be.
    (14 days ago, 0 stars)

I agree with SforkUte. Let us know when the OC is hired, other news is not satisfying.
    (14 days ago, 0 stars)

We’ve been saying that for 15 years. I’m sure it will happen next year.
    (15 days ago, 4 stars)

I didn't read your post, too long.

Bobby Knight once said...nah, won’t go there.
    (16 days ago, 0 stars)

Me too. Except for one player.
    (16 days ago, 0 stars)

Why are you opposed to doing it yourself?
    (17 days ago, 0 stars)

I usually detest ocgreg, but this was a very funny reply. Libs, seriously, come on.
    (17 days ago, 0 stars)

I like Trump sometimes because he's so upsetting to liberals. But I have to agree that he's a jackdonkey.

They're like Genesis without the creepiness of Phil.

DeAndre Hopkins had 115 receptions on the season and ZERO drops.
    (20 days ago, 0 stars)

I thought the offense played pretty well, just had issues holding onto the football.
    (21 days ago, 0 stars)

The classiest fans I've ever met were in South Bend. Unfortunately Crazy Lady and our band kept playing loudly during inappropriate times.
    (21 days ago, 1 stars)

He did pretty well for being in his early 20s.
    (22 days ago, 1 stars)

    He’s a loser.
    (22 days ago, 0 stars)

Brian Johnson has been a very successful QB coach at a high level in the SEC. Has recruiting connections in Texas and Florida. He’d be a great hire as OC.
    (22 days ago, 3 stars)

I agree with SforkUte, didn’t read.

The other game was a blowout loss at home to the 76ers, hang a banner for Exum
    (22 days ago, 0 stars)

How many PAC 12 games are there? 18? So best case scenario is 18-0. PAC 12 is terrible this year.
    (22 days ago, 0 stars)

    I agree
    (22 days ago, 0 stars)

    I'm very concerned
    (22 days ago, 0 stars)

    Wow, liberals...
    (23 days ago, 0 stars)

How many times did Exum give the ball to the other team? Did the Jazz win the game?
    (24 days ago, 1 stars)

Ben Handlogten ain't walking through that door, Jazz fans. This year's team is trash, won't even win 40 games. Mikki Moore ain't walking through that door.
    (25 days ago, 1 stars)

    Go away.
    (25 days ago, 0 stars)

Raul Lopez is actually already signed by the Jazz, my bad. Would love to see him play.
    (25 days ago, 0 stars)

Oh really, how many lives have been lost in civil wars that break out when we decide to support a new side? Our presence in the Middle East is not making things better overall. We should leave.
    (25 days ago, 0 stars)

From what I saw last night, I'd bet Raul Lopez will finish the season stronger. Would love to see him back, he was going to be the next Pasty Gangsta.
    (25 days ago, 0 stars)

    That stat blows my mind.
    (25 days ago, 0 stars)

I've yet to ever vote for anyone.

Lincoln supported Emancipation for the wrong reasons, but Emancipation was still right.
    (26 days ago, 0 stars)

Unfortunately there will never be a good time to withdraw. Trump doing it for the wrong reasons does not make it wrong.
    (26 days ago, 0 stars)

Yes, I believe we can and should be energy independent. I believe in cutting off incentives for oil and gas.
    (26 days ago, 1 stars)

Tony Parker is horrible, missed an open 20 ft game winning jumper by three feet. Jazz ought to track down Raul Lopez, sign him up, and feel better about passing on Parker for Lopez.
    (26 days ago, 0 stars)

Disagree. I believe everyone will be better off if we get out of the middle east and produce/consume our own oil.
    (26 days ago, 0 stars)

If you're objective and not just a Trump hater, you'd be giving Trump props today for bringing troops home from Syria and Afghanistan.
    (26 days ago, 1 stars)

meh, many countries have adopted 0.00% as the standard. Worldwide it looks like the average is probably 0.05% or less.
    (26 days ago, 1 stars)

Everyone already knows Trump is the kind of guy who would do anything he could to dodge the draft. I'm just as disgusted with those daughters, crapping on their dad after he's dead and not around to defend himself; horrible people all around.
    (26 days ago, 1 stars)

Leaf and Neil Lomax are probably the most underrated QBs in NFL history.
    (27 days ago, 0 stars)

I enjoy watching the jazz lose even more when the fans blame the refs.

    the refs again :) :)
    (30 days ago, 0 stars)

What are we trying to build our resume for?
    (30 days ago, 0 stars)

So we used the BYU game to prepare our offense for Washington, and got shut out of the endzone by Washington and gave them the winning touchdown. Awesome strategy.
    (30 days ago, 0 stars)

yet another reason that Zach Wilson would have been a great QB at the U: he looks good even with an OC that’s not good.
    (31 days ago, 0 stars)

Not starting Troy Williams last year was a mistake too.
    (31 days ago, 0 stars)

I’ve never been impressed with attorneys’ knowledge of any subject. I’m confident I know much more than you about immigration.
    (31 days ago, 0 stars)

Why can’t we admit Zach Wilson is a really good QB? He hasn’t beat anyone? Look at his teammates. He nearly beat us with running backs and receivers who wouldn’t even make it as walkons at the U.
    (31 days ago, 0 stars)

    Thank you for sharing.
    (32 days ago, 0 stars)

No, it frightened me and was completely unnecessary. I should sue.
    (32 days ago, 0 stars)

This just makes me even more angry our butthole offense did nothing to win that game. Pissed.
    (32 days ago, 2 stars)

Reminds me of when somebody made up a story about Tom Amstutz having an offer from Chris Hill to be Utah's head coach. That caused a big commotion.

What has the Democratic Party done to punish those responsible for fixing the primaries and ruining the election by not giving their candidates a fair primary against Hillary Clinton?
    (33 days ago, 2 stars)

I don't believe he was President in Oct of 2015. Nor did he believe he would be.
    (33 days ago, 0 stars)

Trump builds towers, that's what he does. If that's against the law, we shouldn't have elected him President.

Lost in the beatdown we laid on OCgreg's Trojans was that once again the PAC 12 refs were biased against us and then went home and beat their wives. (298)
