    Well Done!

    by Gator
    2019-04-09 07:53:28

Last night's championship game was the best officiated game I have seen in a LONG, LONG time.
The refs let people focus on the players and the game, not on them.
They didn't interrupt the flow of the game with stupid calls and reviews of stupid calls.
The refs didn't draw attention to themselves with overuse of their whistles or excessive gestures.
They showed that they could control the conduct of the game without getting every player in foul trouble in the first five minutes. You didn't see the double bonus with 12 minutes left in the half.
Did you notice that the players didn't show frustration because of BS or phantom calls? And this was in a fairly physical and aggressive game.
I didn't see either coach get on the refs for bad calls or anything. Contrast that with EVERY PAC-12 game where both coaches were all over the refs. I am sure, however, that if that jackass Bobby Hurley was coaching in this game he would have been immediately T'd up for his whining and soon thereafter thrown out.
At time outs the announcers saw replays and noted that the refs got it right.

The film of this game should be shown at all referee organization meetings to show how games should be called.

If that dunce Larry Scott were smart. he would pay each of the three refs $200K a year out of his own bloated salary to have them take over management of PAC-12 b-ball officiating, plus paying them well for the games that they officiate, getting rid of the slugs with limited skills and big egos, training those salvageable refs on how to become excellent in their craft, and bring in up and coming youngsters who show promise and want to become the best officials. Nah, Scott ain't that smart.

Sorry for the long post, but as a frequent critic of PAC-12 officiating, it was refreshing to see a well officiated game and give credit where credit was due.

    Some of my observations today

    by Gator
    2019-03-02 19:43:34

    1. Have you noticed that whenever PAC-12 coaches get on the league refs for bad calls, the refs start calling it favor of the the complaining ref's team? And all along you thought it was because PAC-12 officials were living proof that sodomy exists.

    2. Without checking, guess how how many of our league games had us having more free throws? I would be surprised if any PAC-12 team had a bigger disparity in free throws than the Utes.

    3. How many of you think that I am blaming the refs for today's loss? Wrong, wrong, wrong!!! The gang that couldn't shoot straight blew this one all by themselves!

    4. Can you remember the last PAC-12 game that Both Gach started that we didn't fall behind by big numbers at the start. For example, today we were down 8-0 when Gach was taken out. We had tied the score when Gach went back in, and immediately fell behind by 5. Why is he starting? He should only see the floor this year when we are leading and the other team is fouling, or whenever all the other good Ute players have fouled out. Gach IS a good free thrower. The rest of the time??? Not so much. I think putting Gach in the starting lineup has to be Dingleberry Larry's all time coaching boner.

    5. When I threw up watching, we were 4-23 from the three. OUCH! Did we need some seeing eye dogs to help them get to the locker room and later on the bus for the flight home?

    6. Has there ever been a top 10 paid NCAA coach that had a losing record at home in league play? I'm not a betting man, but from this year's experience, I would give the Utes about a 2% chance of winning these last 2 games, and maybe a 40% chance of winning 1 of the last 2. If we choke down the stretch like we did today, I would think that our coaching staff SHOULD be on a very hot seat.

Big kudos to Tillman, my player of the game!!

    by Gator
    2019-02-24 16:52:48

For sure, Barefield was a hot shooter.
    So was Van Dyke.
Franks was an animal...for a half.
Tillman was good too, with something like 15 points and 10 rebounds.

On a team that, except for Jayce Johnson, rarely seems interested in playing defense, Tillman took the challenge to shut down Franks.

Tillman ate Franks' lunch. Best defense by a Ute in a long time. I'm sure that Majerus, from his grave, was smiling.

    Well done, Tillman.

Now that I am totally done with watching the Utes today, my thoughts turned to how I would grade Larry K. for this year

    by Gator
    2019-02-09 16:39:00

I give the man an A++!!

Yes, his coaching this year has been an absolute abomination, but consider other things.

He's living high on the hog because he negotiated/conned Dr. Chris Hill into giving him a very lengthy contract in excess of $3,000,000 per year more than he is worth. He is surely the most over paid head basketball coach in NCAA history. When people bring that up, he just laughs all the way to the bank!

    Brutal Malpractice

    by Gator
    2019-01-24 21:01:43

I can't watch anymore of this. Who says that officials don't determine the outcome of the game?

Tillman will probably start concussion protocol for all the "blocked shots" he suffered.

I saw at least three Ute FG's taken away when they called "non shooting" fouls on Stanford. I wish it was consistently called on the other end of the court.

The only consistent thing about watching PAC-12 sports events is that Utah will be screwed in every sport and the long time PAC-10 teams will benefit, and about 90% of the time the "color man" on the broadcast will be a homer tied to the Ute opponent (Mike Montgomery, former Stanford coach, was the man tonight). You will NEVER see a Ute person on any PAC-12 broadcast involving the Utes.

I guess that sums up my feelings for this chicken-shit league, its sorry-assed officials, and its totally lame broadcast network.

So Penis Harmon and the BYuck fans were complaining about the refs in the UOP game

    by Gator
    2019-01-05 15:14:38

That was nothin'!!! You should have seen the Gang Rape by the Zebras in the UPay game. No wonder that UPay almost never loses at home.

The PAC-12 will always be a skid row conference unless they somehow find a way to get officials who are competent and without bias.

And the Puke12 network needs a policy that states that no "color guy" for a broadcast has any affiliation with one of the teams playing. You know, just so there is not anything that could be deemed the appearance of impartiality. Examples would be Eddie House doing an ASU game, Richard Jefferson doing an ARIZ game, or Bill Walton doing a UCLA game.

End of rant. Oh, and the Utes are getting better.

    by Gator
    2018-12-08 14:35:14

Our starting PG must have incriminating pictures of Larry. Otherwise, how in hell does he see the floor, let alone start? This is also sad commentary on the totally disappointing Jones.

Our "big men" are absolutely useless on offense and couldn't guard a fire hydrant on defense.

Can you name one other coach in the country who gets paid as much as Larry and puts crap like this on the floor?

Please note that I am not complaining about our freshmen. They are still learning. And they are NOT the problem.

Now he has a scapegoat to deflect the blame off of him. So say goodbye to Taylor.

How do I know this is going to happen? Lets just say that a birdie told me that KW had engaged his old buddy TY Detmer to call the plays from a remote location last night. You know, a secret tryout.

And to think we waited since last spring for this shit show.

So please tell me which part of this game is the worst for the Utes

    by Gator
    2018-09-08 19:07:21

Our dumpster fire of an O-line
Our all american place kicking (Don't we have another kicker?)
    Our butter finger receivers
    Our well beaten DL
Our should be third string QB who can't seem to get it together. Don't we have a couple of quality subs?
How about our vaunted efence that supposedly makes sacks and causes turnovers?
How about the so called coaching staff that failed miserably in getting this team ready to play?

Just remember: It's always darkest just before pitch black.

Not one PAC-12 team this year has looked worse than the utes did this half.

It is not that they can't shoot a basket to save their souls. That sometimes happens.

What totally pisses me off is their total and complete LACK OF EFFORT!!!!!

Larry should have put them back on the bus at halftime and gone back to the floor to forfeit the game.

I noticed in the SFGate that Moose Stubbing has passed away.

Years ago I was chatting with the supervisor of officials for the MWC. He said that Moose had the worst mechanics of all their officials, but he had the best control of the game. He avoided ticky-tack calls and tried to keep the players on the court rather than in unnecessary foul trouble. It was an interesting conversation.

Three unsung heroes and a couple of questions

    by Gator
    2017-12-31 20:28:22

    3. Caldwell, who made three three-pointers in the first half and played solidly in that stretch as well, helping the Utes get their half time lead. All along I have thought of him as not having PAC-12 talent. Is there hope?

    2. Van Dyke, who made a needed three and played well in the second half. He will never be a front line player, but he did "good" today.

    1. Jayce Johnson, who is the worst offensive big man on the planet (making David Cecil seem like Kareem Abdul Jabbar in comparison), made two buckets and three free throws in a few minutes to bring the dead-in-the-water Utes back from their 6 point deficit to take the lead and propel them to the win. I love his hustle and rebounding on defense, and his "O" really helped today. He gets my biggest "attaboy" for the day.

Question 1: Can anyone tell me why there was the long time out after the "jump ball" possession to OSU with 1.4 seconds left? There was no TV timeout, the Utes didn't call their last timeout, and OSU had no timeouts left. It seems to me that the ball should have been put in play right away because there did not seem to be any questionable issues to decide at that time. Maybe it took the refs five minutes to figure how much time should be on the clock when the ball was put in play. This became moot when the ref McCall correctly called the travel on the inbounds play. On a side note, I think that the officiating was very good today, if anything maybe in our favor a little down the stretch after Bibbins quietly reminded the ref about the blown block-charge call against him.

Question 2: Has anyone ever seen a worse execution of the "prevent offense" in the closing minutes of the game? Hey, coach, please don't call that again. Ever!

    No excuses, please

    by Gator
    2017-12-26 08:01:36

Much has been made about WVU playing this game without their stud QB, their stud lineman, and their 1000 yard RB who quit to prepare for the NFL.

Less has been made about the Utes also missing some of their stud players. Our stud safety Blair won't play, and likely our other stud S Hansen won't play. If he plays he won't be anywhere near 100%. Our stud CB Johnson is out. Our DB Hughes is out. Our stud WR Wilson won't play. If our stud DE Fitts plays, he won't be anywhere near 100%. Probably the same for our best WR Carrington.

The point here is that BOTH teams will be playing without some of their stud players. I wish that both teams were at full strength.

The team that wins today is the best team. They will probably have the best game plan, the best depth, the best execution, the best halftime adjustments, and maybe catch a few breaks. (Hopefully there will be refs that are far better than the PAC-12 bunch).

The loser won't lose because they were down a few studs. It will be because a better team beat them.

    Go UTES!

It pains me to say this

    by Gator
    2017-12-14 12:18:01

First, in our last game against USU, Parker Van Dyke scored more points (10) than the combined production of two starters (Barefield and Bealer) and our "next all Pac 12 player" (Tillman). This is hugely disappointing to me.

Second, the ultra aggressive Yoeli Childs ate up the 7 footer at UVU who transferred from Kansas and was averaging 17 and 8 against some good competition (including Duke and Kentucky). Childs has also devoured other good big men. OTOH, the better the big man players that Collette has played against, the worse he has been. It is hard to imagine that a player that big can be totally invisible at times. I expect Childs to totally destroy our "Big C.", and then have our big Johnson for dessert.

The Odious Pussies should win this game by more than 10 points.

What should we call this new Troy Taylor offense? You know, Cal calls theirs the "Bear Raid"

    by Gator
    2017-01-03 07:56:44

Maybe this is premature because we haven't seen it in action on a KW team, but...

I first thought of the "Little Bighorn II" offense, but many of the dense ones in Utah would have trouble figuring out if we were the indians or the cavalry. So forget this one.

Based on EWU's success against Washington State last year, why don't we call it the "Cougar Killer" offense?

I'm not even sure that "basketball" is the correct category for this.

It is clear that not one Ute player could guard even a fire hydrant beyond the 3 pt line. It has been this way for the past couple of years. When will our coaching staff address the problem, even if it means benching some of our disinterested defenders?

Did our coaching staff even bother to do anything to prepare this team(?) for this game? All I could see was the obvious plan to guard the 3 pt shot by sending our big men running out from the paint in hopes of distracting their wide open 3 pt shooters.

Tonight's lack of effort was shockingly like our FB team's second half "effort"(?) against the Ducks. And the BB team doesn't even have an OC that needs to be fired. Should we look at Larry?

I will generously put the over/under for Ute boys BB PAC-12 victories this season at five.

    Coaching Malpractice

    by Gator
    2016-11-22 10:47:12

I'm reluctant to interrupt the hate-fest concerning ARod, who sucks, but this is like doctors treating a hangnail and ignoring the patient's sucking chest wound.

The problem is a defense that totally lacks in tackling fundamentals (as well as CB's who are horrible and LB play that is invisible).

Where is our defensive genius head coach when our defense has taken major steps backward? If Fred Whittingham knew what was going on he would probably come out of his grave and kick his son in the nuts for letting this happen. And where is the boy wonder DC who should be doing something about this problem? I mean, it has gotten steadily worse as the season progressed.

Our glorious state legislative audit pointed out that that sometimes pay increases were not consistent with performance (another way of saying no accountability).

My solution to getting focus on fixing these problems is as follows: 1) In his time here Shah has proven to be a better ambulance chaser than CB coach. If we can get rid of Stbblefield for poor performance, it is only fair to dump Shah for the same reason. I am sure we can find a capable replacement; 2)Cut the pay of the remaining defensive coaches 20% next year to remind them that coaching malpractice will not be tolerated. Maybe this will get KW and his defensive coaches to "man up" and fix the problems.

Thanks for letting me vent. Out.

I stand in defense of A"shot" Rod

    by Gator
    2016-11-20 14:42:44

Sometimes I wonder if Ute fans have been paying attention the past several years under KW's reign.

KW has gone through many OCs, most of which were very good before they got to Utah, and then were successful after they left.

The problem lies with K (Woody Hayes) Whit. He is who he is. He is responsible for what his OCs do, and they obey his direction. ARod just follows orders and tries to please his boss. He is a great knob polisher. I do not know how good ARod is at OC, but it doesn't matter as long as he follows KW's direction.

It is known that Wilson was not permitted to audible the play at the LOS. Does Williams have that same restriction? That restriction is very limiting on successful offense. Who made that rule? KW? ARod? Did ARod make that rule and KW knew it but didn't change it?

I believe KW is a good coach. He has his warts when it comes to offense. If we want a better offense scheme, then Whit has to go, and we have to pay whatever price to pay in other areas with a new coach. If we want KW to stay, then we should stop bitching about his offense. To me those are the only two choices that make any sense.
