    Hard to Watch...

    by Forever Crimson
    2019-02-23 18:36:48

I can't understand the terrible lapses on defense, this late in the season. What are these guys practicing?

They are basically playing the same defense every game. Not a bunch of change ups from man to zone to match up zone, or anything in between.

How they can leave guys wide open for 3s, not a defensive player within 10 feet, is beyond disgusting. Interior defense is not much better.

They can score all they want, but poor defense is dooming this team. I blame the coaching staff. this poor defense and lack of hustle in all phases is on the coaching staff, starting with coach K. He is being paid well enough to put a better product on the floor.

Sorry for the rant! And yes, they just went ahead as I am watching, but it doesn't change anything.

    Udubs defense

    by Forever Crimson
    2019-01-10 21:48:06

That Washington coach must be a genius.

Their defense addresses The Utes strong point of outside shooting, and is based on the Utes having a limited inside game.

If the Utes had some balance with some athletic forward and Center, they couldn't be successful with committing the three players to extended defense at the pirimeter.

    Attended the Gymnastics meet Yesterday

    by Forever Crimson
    2019-01-06 15:38:22

First time watching the Red Rocks live. My son had tickets and a parking pass, so made it easy. We took my granddaughter with us.

I was impressed with how consistent the Utes were in each of the events. Not much separation from one to another, with scores consistently in the high 9.00 plus. They won easily by more than 2.00 points overall.

Don't know all about the events, but of course the floor exercise is very impressive, with all the jumps, and flips.

myKayla Skinner is one of the best, and looks smooth and solid through all her events.

Don't follow the team all the time, but came away very much appreciating that the Utes have a very good Gymnastics team.

    Utah Ute Basketball Program

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-12-08 16:05:30

How has the program regressed to where the players we get don't even look like they belong in the PAC12?

Last year our best player was probably Bibbins, a transfer. What happens with the Freshman recruits that coach K is able to convince to come to Utah? KVD and J Johnson are playing their hearts out, but please, these players can't compete against the teams we play in conference.

I'm just getting old and remembering players like Andre Miller, KVH, Bogut, Tom Chambers, Jerry Chambers, Buster Metheney, and yes, even Alex Jensen and Doleac.

I'm sure this team will improve over the season and a few of the newcomers, Allen and Battin, could develop, but it looks pretty bleak right now.

Kudos to Kyle and the Coaching Staff..

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-11-18 12:10:02

for recruiting and developing the excellent team depth that has been instrumental in winning the South Div..

Can't remember a year where we lost the starting QB and Running back, plus loss of key players for parts of games at LB and Safety (to targeting calls), and the next guy up performed well enough to keep the Utes from missing a beat.

Going forward I would like to see the Utes start putting Line Backers and Wide receivers in the NFL. The quality of recruits has steadily increased and I don't think it is a stretch to get another Steve Smith type receiver at Utah!

Watching Sports on TV, Laptop, and Kindle at same time..

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-11-12 22:38:43

I'm an old guy, but willing to use technology to watch the events I'm interested in.

The Ute game on the TV was a good game by the Utes, as far as it being just the 2nd game, on the road, with a respectable Big Ten team.

The Utes played hard and actually kept their defense and offense together a high percentage of the time. Yes, they had obvious lapses on defense, and the offense at times was tough. I give the gophers some props for causing some of it because they have some pretty good offensive players. They also play sound defense.

A glaring exposure to me is the lack of size for the Utes. Novak holds his own in the middle, but then there is a drop off in size. After Tillman, we need a couple more 6-8, to 6-9 players with some skill. Allen and Hendrix are great, but undersized when going against the Gophers inside.

The lack of scoring threats inside, besides Nick, makes it tough for the Utes to get good shots outside. PVK could barely get a shot off tonight.

Lahat Thioune is going to have to contribute this year to help the Utes against bigger teams.

More on Topalovic. I watched some youtube video of Nick after they signed him. I came on Utefans and complained that what I saw was a slow non-athletic guy that was tall and could rebound, but otherwise why recruit him to play 1 year? Some Utefans responded I was being too harsh. I thought they were crazy. Well, I am eating humble pie tonight. I don't know how good he can get, but the Utes didn't have a chance without his play tonight. He will certainly help the Utes this year.

Watched the NFL game on my laptop because I picked San Fran to win in a pickem contest. Wrong!!

Had the Jazz game on my kindle, just because I follow the Jazz. Nice win!

    I'm tired. Good night.

    Watching Ohio St. game

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-11-10 12:29:08

Ohio State just downed a punt at the 5 yard line.

Meyer had very good special teams at Utah, and I'm sure it helped with many of the wins the Utes enjoyed those years.

But what I noticed was how the play was achieved.

A Ohio state player got to the ball as in was coming down right at the goal line, and batted the ball back, where a team mate downed the ball.

It has always been a sore point with me to see players in the same situation try to catch the ball and stay out of the goal. You wonder what the special teams coach is teaching?

To me it is a small thing, but a player that doesn't bat the ball back into the playing field is being selfish and is only thinking of making a great play that he can prance around about after.

If he bats the ball back and it ends up anywhere inside of where it would be spotted with a touchback, then the play is successful. It would be great if the ball is downed inside the 5, but even further out is a great help to the defense in backing up the opposing offense.
Just my litte axe to grind.

Just an added thought for todays game. For M. Blair and any other defensive player: Please don't even give the refs a reason for calling a targeting foul! I know it is a difficult situation, but the rules are what they are, until changed.

Go Utes!! Play a solid game and I like our chances.

    Cinderfella finish to season

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-11-09 10:26:10

Anyone remember Brett Ratliff starting in place of B Johnson against BYU? Johnson was injured and Ratliff had to start in one of our most important games against our hated rival.

I remember not having much confidence in the Utes chances because Ratliff was a bit of an unknown. He was more of a pocket passer, and Johnson had some scrambling skills.

It was so surprising how Ratliff performed. He looked like he had been the starting QB from the start, and led the Utes to a 41-34 Victory! Woohoo!

Then the Utes finished the season off with a victory over Georgia Tech in a bowl game.

    Cinderella finish!

So its possible. There is a reason the backup QB is very important in football, since there is the chance of injury at any time in this sport. We have to trust that the coaches selected well and picked the guy that gives the Utes the best chance to win.

This is going to be quite a test against Oregon, but it is at home, which is an advantage.

Also, The Ute defense is still a great defense, and they will have to step it up to support Shelley.

Of course it is not all on Shelley. The O line must do a great job. The receivers and running backs have to give that extra effort. No dropped balls, no fumbles, and extra effort to gain that extra yard.

Shelley has a good supporting cast. I say the Utes have a chance, and that is all you every ask for. Right?

Always amazes me how these 2nd tier teams come in an give us a good game on our court. Makes you think we won't win a game in the PAC12.

I'm sure these are scrimmage games to coach K and he uses it to see who is going to put the effort, especially against a lesser foe. As a result he plays a lot of guys and line ups, that leave the Utes disjointed and looking bad sometimes.

He'll really have some teaching points in the next practices before Minnesota.

    Game with U of Maine

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-11-08 16:33:45

This will be another chance to see what the Utes look like this year.

Googled U of Maine. They are the Black Bears and have an 82-40 win over Presque Isle, and lost to U of Denver by just 13. U of Denver used to have a good basketball program (I'm from the Cactus Jack era),

Many of the players are from other countries. Ukraine, Brazil, Sweden, Serbia, Taiwan, Latvia, Croatia, England, Lebanon.

I didn't try to find any box scores to show who the scorers are, but no player is over 6' 8 that I could see.

Hopefully they give our Utes a good work out. I just like to see who might emerge from the newcomers as big contributors this year. Maybe will take game against the gophers to start showing.
    Go Utes!!

    Random thoughts on the game

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-11-04 10:38:57

After a night of calming down, I want to post some random thoughts on the game. It is somewhat cathartic for me, but may not be meaningful to others.

I don't know about the rest of you Ute fans, but many of the negative plays are a gut punch to me, and they kept coming.

Afia's targeting call. Just when the Utes had forced a field goal attempt.

Dixon muffing an easy catch and popping up the football like a gift to the db. It seemed to happen in slow motion as I went from "touchdown" elation, to "Oh no" it can't be.
It looked like it was scripted and practiced to deliver the ultimate gut punch. I almost doubled over from that one. But Hope springs eternal.

Then Huntley went down and was completely still. I think we all knew, but didn't want to jinx the fact that a running QB, especially since Huntley has gotten better at it and had planned runs more often, probably meant a high probability that he would get hurt at some point. And it finally happened. It was a good run. Yes, I know it happened on a pass play.

Next, the normally reliable Covey muffs another punt. It was a tough catch, and I'm sure Covey was thinking that they could not let it go and lose field position since they were so far behind in score. But kind of a finishing punch to the solar plexes that dashed any hope of coming back.

Seriously, I think Troy Taylor and his offense is a keeper. I think he needs some more talent and depth to keep the performance consistent game to game. It is not easy to win games in the PAC12.
If one of your most consistent performers in the offense is an undersized Utah native named Covey, and you have had a run where you defeated Stanford, USC, and UCLA, (teams you wished you could schedule when in the MWC), then you are doing something right.

Thanks Utefans! I think I feel better now. Go Utes!!

Watched replay of the USC game..

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-10-25 19:37:01

The number of turnovers, and near turnovers by the Utes is concerning. Great defensive play negated some of the impact, but the game could have been much closer than it was.

The blocked punt involved a complete breakdown in blocking.

The fumbles by the offense were not due to strips or punching the ball out, but just hard hits that are going occur almost every play.

The missed catch by Covey was more mental than physical. There are times when you do not try to catch the ball, to avoid a turnover. Covey will learn from what happened.

I'm sure coach Whit had them working overtime on ball security this week!

I'm hoping KW is using this to keep the boys grounded. Too many people telling them they have the South Title in the bag. While they have a great chance if they maintain the great play and improve on the negative things, they have to keep errors to a minimum on this championship run.

Hard to pick out just a few great plays in the USC game...

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-10-21 10:50:35

with the team playing so well overall. But a few things that stood out to me.

Didn't see Covey's reception and scoring run (birthday party I couldn't miss) but was listening on the radio on the way home. That got the Utes back into the game, and really turned the momentum back around. I had just tuned in and the announcer was just reporting the turnover and score by USC to make it 14 nothing!
So Covey's score was really important.

Got home and started watching. The Utes played well on defense and offense, in line with the last few games. Good to see it continue.

Chase hansen is really stepping up his play. He has the frame to be an NFL linebacker. Hope he gets drafted. Cody Barton is right there with him. In fact, the Utes may have among the best linebackers in the PAC 12 this year IMHO.

Simpkins amazing catch in the endzone was a highlight because it was delivered at an NFL speed and accuracy, and Simkins snagged it with his hands and brought it in. Also, it made the score 14 - 34 and really delivered the message that the Utes were not going to take their foot off their throats.

Lastly, I am amazed at Huntley's continued developement and confidence. Especially, two things. His touch on long passes! Maybe it just takes more opportunities in game conditions, which TT is now giving him. Secondly, his strength and decisive running really kept drives alive. Can't believe how he shook off some of USC's best tacklers. The playbook and execution keeps getting better and better.

    Go Utes!! Fun to watch!

    Paul James passed away

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-10-09 11:31:59

Giving away my age, I remember when James called Utah football games during my time at the U. He went over to the "other" side and did the same for BYU for many years. He was quite a personality and knowledgeable about the players and stats.

Although I hated the fact he was on the BYU bandwagon during many of our lean football years, he was pretty even handed in calling the rivalry games. Not a BYU homer to the extreme.

    Rest in Peace.

What are expectations for tonights game?

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-10-06 19:01:17

Hope springs eternal! I am looking forward to tonights game, even though I don't have great confidence in getting a win, still want to see a solid well played game by the Utes.

This is far enough into the season that there should be some correction to some of the problems the Utes have had so far. Number 1, keep play killing mistakes to a minimum. This is correctable with good coaching.

Improve execution on both offense and defense. By now Taylor should have the complete playbook installed and practiced. He should know the strengths and weaknesses of his players, especially the quarterback. If this results in dialing back to a run heavy, short pass offense, so be it. But if Huntley doesn't produce in the first quarter, I think it is time for a change. Shelley should have had extra snaps this week. Nothing to lose.

The defense cannot give up big plays like they did against Washington St.. Scalley (and Kyle) need to have a solid game plan to keep the score low and manageable. I have every confidence the Utes will have a solid defensive showing.

The Utes have solid to very good kicking game players. It's time for the Utes to win with the field position game and field goals.

    Go Utes!!

Why are the Utes so hapless?

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-09-08 18:26:08

The O line is terrible. This is the product after being in the pac12 all this time!? Same O line coach, same result.

Huntley and the offense is terrible. Why does it take so long to get plays in? Go with Shelley pretty soon or the season is shot.

The Defensive line is terrible. They haven't stopped the run, and get no, absolutely no, pressure on the QB.

    Terrible!

    Novak Topalovic

    by Forever Crimson
    2018-04-17 19:20:15

Check out youtube video of Topalovic. He is slow and terrible at defense.

I don't understand coach K offering this guy. There has to be better, younger, big men out there that he can recruit to Utah.

With the success lately of former Utes like Poeltl, Wright, Kuzma, coach K should be able to convince some good players to join the Utes.

This trend of picking up players with limited eligibility is troubling. Yes, Bibbins turned out to be a great player, but how can you build a great program and show that you develop players for the NBA when your program is helter skelter in recruiting from year to year.

The defense was playing well. Why throw the pass on their last possession? Could have taken more time off the clock.

Why call the time out when it looked like Washinton was going to let time run out to play overtime. Wow?

Your players play their asses off and you reward them with less than stellar decision making. Kyle has made his money. Time for a change.

Utes pass rush may be key to a win Saturday...

    by Forever Crimson
    2017-11-09 13:40:40

The win over UCLA gives us some hope vs Wazzu. But if the Utes play a steady game in all other facets, then they have to mount a better pass rush to win the game.

It looks like there is some improvement in this area, but I think Scalley has to start dialing up some extra guys, Linebackers/Dbs coming after the QB, in more situations.

Yes, there be some risk in agressive blitzes, but I would much rather the Utes be agressive on defense, than the old 3 man rush that gives them all the time in the world to find a receiver.

    Go Utes!!

    Didn't see that one coming...

    by Forever Crimson
    2017-11-04 09:05:10

But a win is a win and it feels great!

UCLA looks like they are really in trouble. Without Rosen, they have no chance.

Beginning to wonder about the artificial turf at Eccles. A couple of the injuries were pretty much without contact, with knees or ankles giving way on a plant foot.

Hopefully a lot of the injuries to the Ute players were looking like something they can shake off by next week.

Hate to find fault with a big win, but the way the Ute offense played in the first quarter should have doomed us. A better offensive team than UCLA without Rosen probably would have scored a few points and made it a much different situation.
Never seen Whittingham looking so exasperated at the ineptitude of the Offense early on.

It really made you wonder if they practiced any of the plays. This many games into the season, and the team looked and acted like they could not understand a play call, had difficulty lining up, and then executed it poorly. Wow! Then added in penalties to go backwards. Unwatchable!

Hopefully we see more of the Ute team that took over later, on both defense and offense, and very little of the first quarter team.

    Troy Taylor being tested

    by Forever Crimson
    2017-10-09 21:42:10

Troy is in his first year as an OC at this level. He has been dealt some adversity already in his young tenure at Utah.

His QB of choice to run his offense, Huntley has been injured and is out. He chose Huntley over an incumbent QB.

The offensive line play has been inconsistent at best, in both run and pass blocking. Which doesn't help the backup QB, Williams, who is not as elusive as Huntley.

Defenses are starting to game plan to take away Carrington.

Since TW does not have the same skill set as Huntley, Taylor's playbook going forward is necessarily reduced.

But hopefully Taylor sees this as a challenge, even an opportunity, to show his skills in game planning and play calling.

Taylor has had 2 games against PAC12 defenses this year. He has almost 2 full games seeing what TW can and cannot do against these defenses.

It is apparent that TW has a strong arm and is accurate if he is set and in the pocket. But it is also apparent that he does not have the time or maybe ability to get through more than 1 receiver read, before taking the dumpoff pass.

TW is not very good at the read option, holding it too long or mishandling the exchange.

TW needs plays where he gets the ball out quickly. He also needs the run game to step up and help him out. The Utes have some good Running Backs. Goes without saying the O line needs to gel further and improve blocking assignments.

It may start looking like Kyle ball, but it may not be at all bad given the circumstances.

    Go Utes!!
