The Ute nickname goes back at least a hundred years.

The University of Utah has been using the Ute nickname since long before 1972. The school also used the nickname "Redskins" from time to time, but when "Ute Stadium" opened in 1927 the nickname Utes was pretty well entrenched as the primary nickname.

In 1972 the University requested that newspapers and publications never use "Redskins" to describe the team.

For evidence that we were the Utes going back, look at the 1929 Utonion article about the newly built "Ute Stadium."

The Story of the Ute Stadium
Immediately following the Utah-Aggie football classic held on Thanksgiving Day, 1926 action was taken towards the obtaining of means to build a new playground for the Utes. The Turkey Day contest was witnessed by 15,000 fans which number taxed the old and historic Cummings Field to its utmost capacity. Many were turned away because of inadequate seating facilities.

...

Before a crowd of nearly 15,000 students, alumni and other spectators and between the halves of a homecoming game worthy to dedicate any playing field, the University of Utah stadium, the new home of the Utes was dedicated. The dedication ceremonies were dignified and entirely fitting for such an occasion. The opening was indeed auspicious for the Utes who won a thrilling 20 to 13 victory from the University of Colorado, the second since leaving historic Cummings Field.

(Internal italics added.)

So don't let anyone tell you that the Utes nickname is a recent addition. It is not.

Newbomb Turk icon NEW: I remember when we were playing Wyoming at home in the early 80's, one of their fans was calling us Redskins. I also vaguely remember the scoreboard in Laramie saying "Redskins". (nm)
