I wonder when it will occur to small, service companies to bid up wages & benefits to attract and retain unskilled labor. .

The country's demographics is changing. The number of people in the age group that has typically filled those positions has leveled off. The same thing happened in Japan and a couple countries in Europe.

You suggest companies have "a ton of extra capital to put towards jobs and hiring." I think they're more likely to invest in productivity and automation. Especially if the supply of labor is level and wages are getting bid up.
