Things not looking up for Stratolaunch’s monster airplane

You may recall a thread a while back (started by pangloss, maybe?) about this plane. It’s looking like its maiden flight may also be its last.

I like to think I called this one. I could never figure out what Stratolaunch’s payload niche was going to be for the satellites, and they kept switching out entire rocket concepts that the plane would carry. So, in a nod to Howard Hughes’ “Spruce Goose,” a few years back I started calling this plane the “Carbon Condor.” Should have copyrighted it.

Rocker Ute icon NEW: It boggles the mind that that amount of money can be spent on something that is obviously not commercially viable. It just underscores how so many truly wealthy people had a massive dose of luck. (nm)

HoopUte icon NEW: It seems that once having a superyacht became too common, a lot of these guys decided they needed their own rockets. (nm)

pangloss icon NEW: Did you see the Osceola static test. I wonder what changes they made to the Shuttle nozzle. Of all the things that could go wrong, I wouldn't have expected the exit cone. Thoughts? (nm)

HoopUte icon NEW: I hadn’t seen that. I guess I’m glad I withdrew from the Chief Engineer bid on that project and chose to retire instead. I’m too old for that failure investigation $#!+. (nm)

pangloss icon NEW: Yea, I don't imagine that's a fun job right now. That thing sure looks like Schwartz's EELV. GEM case, right? (nm)

HoopUte icon NEW: Yeah. They wind them up at Promentory in a brand new machine.
