I haven't gone free, but I sort of feel that way because I ignore it for the most part

That said, I feel for the most part that social media that is personal, in that it is between a modest sized group of people you know personally and see reasonably often, can maybe even improve connections. Reason being that you actually have a window into what they are doing even when you aren't together which is a jumping off point for conversations when you are. Of course, this means the onus is on you to ensure your friend group is appropriately sized and populated.
Attention-whoring on the other hand is uber-bad, and using it for political discourse or to get your news and information is suspect at best.
