We call them “short-timers”. They won’t be riding bikes for very long even if they survive their accident.

I recently heard that the average driver will get into 4 accidents over their driving career. 1 every 18 years. I had a friend say he’s “only” been if 4 accidents in 20 years but none were his fault. I beg to differ, I’ve been able to avoid accidents from putting myself in favorable situations.

Case in point, the other day a car ran a red light right in front of me. If I was to just go on green I would’ve been nailed. A little bit of precaution and I saw the idiot coming. No accident.

Back to your response, all motorcycle drivers aren’t inherently better but the longer a bike rider goes without an accident can be a direct result of good driving behavior.

FTR I’ve been riding bikes for 25 years, not one accident, many close calls. I was in a bad car accident when I was 19. Guy turned in front of me, said he couldn’t see me. Made me realize that from that point on I’m going to assume the other driver can’t see me. 24 years later I haven’t even had a single impact with another vehicle.

480ute icon NEW: This isn't a new phenomenon though. People have been turning into the incorrect lane since driving was invented.

LA Ute icon NEW: I'd say 80% of drivers, when they turn right, take the inside lane in that situation. (I don't, unless there's no other traffic visible anywhere.) When I am turning left in the situation you describe...

LA Ute icon NEW: Yes. But for some people, like me, the rules really don't apply. The problem is that so many others erroneously think the same thing about themselves. (nm)

The Thrill icon NEW: It’s like turning right into a two lane road where the right lane is unoccupied.
