Article by Kragthorpe in the Trib, re: football ticket prices and scheduling

I have a couple of thoughts on each subject:

Prices

I was not happy with the Crimson Club price increase, particularly now that the IRS ruling disallows the deduction of most of the value of the donation. That ruling was effectively a 33% increase in my Crimson Club costs prior to the actual increase by the U.

I'm OK with the fee for stadium expansion, as I think we will all benefit from the expansion, the fee is small, and I assume it will disappear after two years.

Ticket prices will keep going up, which I supposed is to be expected, particularly with the high demand, and for the time being, I'll continue to pay. However, as I approach retirement, I'm sure there will come a day when I'll downgrade or quit buying season tickets all together. I'll quit Basketball first, potentially in the next two years, if I see no progress with the team.

Schedule

The PAC12 home schedule is not great this year. No USC, Washington, Ore, Stanford, but instead down teams in UCLA, Colorado, and (maybe not too down) Cal. The other two home games are against opponents that I really hate, and with which Utah seems to inexplicably struggle: Wazzu, and ASU. I expect to win both of these games, but don't expect either to be easy.

The article lists all currently booked non-conference games. I like the fact that we stick with local FCS opponents for our one "warm-up" game, and I love that we have Wyoming on the schedule. I would like to see us play that second game regularly against some other traditional opponents, Colorado State, New Mexico, etc.

Now for my ONE, REAL, gripe: Get BYU off the schedule. No home/away with them ever - not first game, 3rd game, last game, ever! Perhaps an occasional one-off home game if a late scheduling change becomes necessary. Get them off the schedule! (And I don't care about the the butt-hurt Orem/Provo legislators, we should instead fight it politically, and they'll eventually get over it.)

In their place, should be a home-away series with a quality (not too high) P5 school. A team from the middle of the SEC, Big 12, Big 10. This gives us an interesting home game and an opportunity to watch the Utes in a variety of different road venues. If we actually win the conference this year and start to trend upward a level, a neutral field game against an Auburn, or some such could be swapped for one year with the B game with Wyoming, etc.

Regardless of scheduling, prices, and all else, I CANNOT wait for the upcoming season. Go Utes!

o NEW: The Religiouslature protects tds. If there isn't anything else that is damning, Utah should stop scheduling the pricks down south. tds has enough crooked tithing money to cover their expenses. (nm)
