Agree to disagree with regard to employee retention. I spent a chunk of my career working in the service industry in call centers and similar places. Employee retention even in a robust economy with workers shortages was always an after thought.

Turnover in call centers especially is always high since it is relatively easy and cheap to train new people when existing staff leave. Most execs looked at turnover as merely a cost of doing business. When they are paying minimum wage there were always plenty of folks to bring in. This was especially true in places doing outbound calling on an auto-dialer where they just needed to read from a script.
