If the GOP is willing to go through this unprecedented step of re-defining emergency executive powers as "a means to circumvent congress in order to get whatever the hell the President wants", then I fully expect that the Democrats will utilize the same powers to get something they want at some point in the future. I think this emergency declaration is a completely absurd step, and I strongly hope that one outcome of this fiasco is a much more stringent definition of what actually constitutes an "emergency".

In the meantime, I will admit to enjoying watching Trump and the rest of the GOP continuing to look like the utterly spineless buffoons that they are. Especially with a timeline that looks like this:

January 2017 - GOP Majority
January 2017 - Wall not an emergency
February 2017 - Wall not an emergency
March 2017 - Wall not an emergency
March 2017 - Wall not an emergency
April 2017 - Wall not an emergency
May 2017 - Wall not an emergency
June 2017 - Wall not an emergency
July 2017 - Wall not an emergency
August 2017 - Wall not an emergency
September 2017 - Wall not an emergency
October 2017 - Wall not an emergency
November 2017 - Wall not an emergency
December 2017 - Wall not an emergency
January 2018 - Wall not an emergency
February 2018 - Wall not an emergency
March 2018 - Wall not an emergency
April 2018 - Wall not an emergency
May 2018 - Wall not an emergency
June 2018 - Wall not an emergency
July 2018 - Wall not an emergency
August 2018 - Wall not an emergency
September 2018 - Wall not an emergency
October 2018 - Wall not an emergency
November 2018 - Wall not an emergency
November 2018 - Democratic Majority elected to Congress
January 2019 - OMG...EMERGENCY!!

Newbomb Turk icon NEW: Chris Stewart just came out against Trump declaring a national emergency. He said he is afraid that some future president will declare gun violence or climate change an emergency.

o NEW: And this timeline right here will create an interesting question for the Court on whether it can weigh in on "national emergencies" or whether they will call it a political question. (nm)

SkinyUte icon NEW: Trump was offered quite a bit more for border security on multiple occasions, and he turned it down because it wasn't specifically for the "crazy massive wall". Hell, he was offered $25B just last year.
