New methods of extracting natural gas (fracking) at much lower costs killed coal. The fact that it is cleaner and emits less carbon is a secondary benefit.

The comparative cost advantage of gas over coal drove the switch. If wind becomes cheaper than gas, it will happen again. A carbon tax would help that switch.
