What makes a person good?

I'd say that a good person cares about others. I don't see that as the norm. Ultimately, very few people are willing to stick their neck on the line for others. We talk a good game, but when it comes down to it, our own individual lives are far more important than anybody or anything else.

We have entire political ideologies that push aside long term interests for short term gains, future generations be damned. We have a huge chunk of people here that believe we are superior to anybody outside imaginary lines we drew on a map. We have growing segments that are all about inclusion, unless you don't agree with their political ideas, in which case you're deemed a piece of $#!+. Even at most churches I've attended, empathy and giving often flew out the window when people's own lives were disrupted.

Often times, shaming others, which is really just appealing to one's self interests, is the only way to make people do good deeds. I think most people desire to be good, and often try, but I'm not convinced that we're inherently good enough to thwart major threats to other groups outside of our own. And, I'm as much a part of the problem as anybody. Sorry to be a downer. I am slightly more optimistic about the game tomorrow though.
