RE: It is reasonable to question everything...

I just think it's leadership on offense. Not as in "nobody is in charge" but as in "our leash as an offense is really, really long."

I'm using corporate life as a model here, because that's what I know. There are divisions of the company that the C-suite cares about and is keeping their eye on. Those divisions work hard, and tweaks get made every single week, some from management, some from on high. Because there is a chain of accountability that is very active.

Then there are divisions of the company that the C-suite doesn't care about or keep their eye on, day-to-day. Those divisions, bottom to top, end up on autopilot, because everyone knows they're really not accountable for much more other than showing up, day-to-day.

Once a year or once every couple of years, the autopilot divisions will be named as underperforming and there'll be a shakeup. A bunch of senior management will go, and new, "world class" senior management will be put in their place. But post-shakeup, because they're not favorites of the C-suite, they're back on autopilot again in short order.

I'm not close to the program in any way, but Whitt is a defensive coach, and we field a solid-to-great defense, every single year. Meanwhile, the offense is generally on autopilot, and the only accountability comes with the periodic shakeup.

I have no trouble believing, and this is my suspicion, that there's just not a lot of day-to-day leadership alignment, no coherent chain of effort and accountability from Whit -> Troy -> assistants -> captains in a coherent, all-in together sort of way, because the HC doesn't care concretely, day-to-day, about offense, and this trickles downward, waterfall-style.
