I think there are 4 types of sports fans.

1. The superfan who thinks their team is going to win the championship every year, then beats a puppy or drinks himself silly when they don't. These people live empty and shallow lives and live vicariously through the success of young athletes who don't give a $#!+ about him. You'll see these people at every event, you'll hear them on the radio and occasionally on the news for something bad. You'll see them dressed up for the game in warpaint or their lucky outfit. These people buy jerseys. They will break down the offense and defense all let everybody know how to fix the issues. They also complain about every penalty. We appreciate your effort bro, but it's just a game.

2. The loyal local who roots for their local team simply because they always have. They like when they win but aren't completely bummed if they lose. I think a majority of people fall into this category. You'll see these people at every game they can go to. They root, they cheer, they know every song and details about players and win or lose they listen to the post game and then go home and mow the lawn.

3. The scenester fan who only goes to games if somebody has a free ticket or they know somebody in the halftime show. These people don't really care about who wins but they pretend to care and have behavior similar to annoying sports fan characters from movies because they really don't know how to act otherwise. These people are the worst. They generally know about 10% of the current roster or recent game outcomes. They're only there to tell everybody on Monday that they were there. These are bad fans who think being an #@%hole to your rival is just what you do, "it's part of the game." These #%!@nuts are the vocal minority who for us are Mormon haters who spew vulgar insults for fun and are belligerent drunks who show up midway through the first quarter and then leave soon after because their "buddy is also here". They know very little about the sport and even less about the rules. Nobody wants them there but they still show up and they account for about 10% of every game in every stadium, sometimes higher. Thanks for coming but you look like an idiot. You'll see these people at BYU or Arizona games.

4. The passive fan. I hate to say wives because it's sexist so I'll say the passive scenester. These people are always welcome because they can become loyal fans, they just don't care. They're good sports and support their significant other because it's "their thing" but they're really just there to enjoy the afternoon and get one of those plastic cups you only get at games. You'll see these people at Weber St games.

Newbomb Turk icon NEW: I remember when a byu-p player came up into the stands at RES and started beating on a Ute fan who was sitting by the player's family. Not sure why, probably some jawing going on back and forth.
