I don't even know where to begin...

2017 US medical services costs are estimated at $3.5 TRILLION. So...let's scrap the military to pay for 17% of our health budget?

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-he althcare-spending/u-s-healthcare-spending- to-climb-5-3-percent-in-2018-agency-idUSKC N1FY2ZD

In 2013-2014 the US spent $634 billion on public elementary and secondary schools. That's 104% of the military budget you sourced.

Total college expenditures are (on average) $37,990 per student with 16 million students enrolled in college or $607.8 billion, again, more than the defense budget.

And how do you propose we pay for all this once the population bell curve tips over?

As far our military spending relative to other countries...there are too many variables for this to be a worthwhile stat. How many countries don't spend as much on their military because they have large social welfare budget problems? How many don't spend money because they don't have the ability with their entire GDP to influence power outside their boarders, so they keep a minimal force for defense? How many spend what they do because of strong regional alliances? What about countries like Brazil, South Korea, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and China that have a PPP advantage over the US? What about the fact that outside of China (who severely under-reports its military spending), the largest GDP of any of those countries is Japan at $4.8 trillion vs the US at $19.4 trillion?

The total world GDP (in dollars) is 78.28 trillion, and the US is a quarter of that value. Of course we're going to spend more than other countries on just about everything!
