Oh, but the invisible hand market forces will correct the imbalances. People that buy tainted meat will die off and the vendors who sell it will go out of business. It's a self correcting mechanism, like the plague.

The same market forces would have worked for cars and the highway system if federal regulators had stayed out of it. People dumb enough to buy a Corvair or a car without seat-belts or collapsible steering columns or drive on dangerous roads would have died off.
And if demand for safe technology was strong enough then the market would deliver. It's a Darwinian, survival of the fittest, sort of thing.
