Just the facts on the BYU ESPN deal

first of all it is a fact that there is no way BYU could have survived long term on the 1.2-1.5 million it got each year from the MWC...even under the Sports West/KSL local deal BYU got up to 3 million per year and that was 6 years ago. BYU took a huge cut in revenue because they were a part of the MWC and it had no choice. Independence was an option but it didn't make sense to it for local TV $$$ and an increase of only about 1.5 million.

Utah goes to the Pac-12 had everything to do with BYU going, but don't let this get your heads too big, it was just BYU was not going to make a move without Utah. No BYU does not blame Utah for taking the deal, but BYU was not going to leave Utah in the MWC alone for just independence sake. Now if the Big-12 came calling that may have been another story...it didn't, Utah got a good deal and left. BYU followed by doing what it had to do.

Nowhere has it been published what the actual $$$$ are, mostly because it will vary so much based on opponent, channel, and frankly how BYU is doing. I have seen anywhere from 800,000 to 2 million per game. BYU is getting 1 million to play Ole Miss and another 2 million and change to play TCU so those numbers make sense as an estimation. Again, no financial terms have been officially released.

Since the home teams own the TV rights BYU has 4 games next year that they will get on BYUTV and will get the $$$. Since BYU got about 500k per game under the old Sportswest deal, that is a decent starting number. BYU will have production costs that are pretty high and they need to have some way to recoup those. So there will likely be advertising and a payout to BYU athletics. These numbers are not disclosed either, neither will they be because like coaches salaries it is BYU internal practice not to disclose. Now it may be that BYUTV does the broadcasts without revenue and a local station picks up the costs and sells the sponsorships and shows the games locally. This is still going to net BYU $$$ similar to the old Sportswest deal.

The biggest plus is BYU does not have to share its revenues with a conference office to be disbursed to multiple teams. BYU gets to keep its TV $$$, its bowl $$$, and any other revenues it had to share under conference affiliation. The cons have already been discussed and BYU fans know it is a risky venture, however, the prospects of having it pay off look good especially with the 8 year ESPN deal.

so doing just simple addition here is the breakdown of 2011 TV $$$

ESPN 3 games @ 800K-2 million 2.4-6 million
ESPN Ole Miss 1 million
ESPN TCU 2 million
BYU TV 4 games @ 500k 2 million
----------------------------------
Total- between 7.4 and 11 million

all of this is estimated of course, but it seems a fair estimation even based on conservative projections.

not it's not BCS conference $$$$ but it pales in comparison to what BYU got before, and it will keep the bottom line looking good for the near future.

LA Ute icon NEW: Let's assume the story is true about BYU being on the verge, back in the 90s, of getting a Big 12 invite. If the invite had actually been extended, how many nanoseconds do you think it would have taken for BYU to accept and leave Utah behind? (nm)

o NEW: And ESPN is paying the Y $2 mil tor the TCU game? That would mean ESPN is paying $4 mil for the game? I suspect it is paying $2 milllion total, to be split b/w the Y and TCU. (nm)
