All is not Well in Uteland
-- A poem on Garner Meads --

I am not the author, but it did bring a tear to my eye:

The season wasn’t going well
For yootah fans that year.
They’d strutted into Louisville
And been kicked in the rear.

So when Hanno launched his air ball shot
And the in bounds pass flew out,
The mood throughout all yootville
Was to cry and whine and pout.

The sobered yoot fans, drained of hope,
Trudged slowly from Rick’s floor.
But all the drunken uglies stayed
(too sloshed to find the door).

They said “we need a signing coup
To straighten out this mess.
He’d better be a big time stud
And bad like us - no less.”

Then suddenly their eyes lit up,
A smile their faces cut.
It echoed off the Huntsman chairs
And even Majerk’s gut.

It rumbled through the locker room
And every smoke filled den,
For Garner, mighty Garner,
Was advancing to the pen.

His stats were all American.
His pedigree just right.
He was the one to save them
From their case of zoobie fright.

He’d follow Jensen and Carlisle
And thereby let them be,
As ugly and pathetic
As fans you’ll ever see.

And so it was that as they watched
Meads’ each and every move.
They knew they had him in the bag.
As soon his sig would prove.

There was ease in Garner’s manner
But no sound came from from his voice.
His silent lips gave ne’er a hint
As to his final choice.

The yoot crowd, full of confidence
Knew their record and could tell
That Garner surely would be theirs
Lest they send him to h---!

With confidence and quiet pride,
He reached out for a pen.
A yootah welcome was at stake
Plus glory - but what then?

“A painful choice,” he whispered,
As he looked up to the sky.
A hush went through all yootville
As his sig prepared to fly.

The calm is drained from Garner’s face.
His lips are tense and keen.
And all along his jump shot hands
Deep furrows can be seen.

And now he takes the pen in hand.
And now he lets it flow.
And now the air is shattered
By the force of Garner’s blow.

Oh somewhere in this bball land,
There is a happy spot,
Where Cougar fans make big time plans
But yootah fans do not.

And somewhere coaches smile with glee
As prized recruits they eye.
But there is no joy in yootville -
Garner Meads went to the Y.

Oh, to don the blue and white
What Joy that it would be
In front of just 2,000 fans
And never on TV!

To play with all those top recruits
Before friends from the MTC
Why would I want to play in the Big Dance
When I could play in the NIT?
