If anyone needs to blow off some steam due to Saturday's result, Fleshgod Apocalypse is playing tonight at Metro Music Hall (over by Gateway). Having seen them twice before, I can guarantee that the mosh pit will be superb.

FGA will be joined by Arkona (very good Russian folk metal) and The Agonist. Should be a fantastic show.

This public service announcement brought to you by your friendly neighborhood metalhead.

Underestimating Utah feels dangerous at this point, but here we go anyways.

It's really hard to move up each year in a zero-sum universe. There are more good coaches than there are successful coaching performances. Even if you are an excellent coach, and even if you establish a winning trajectory, you still hit potholes.

So this is where Utah regresses, at least temporarily, right? Maybe? There are still games to be won in a division where Colorado is still struggling and where the Arizona schools are resetting. But it is very rare to improve for four years in a row.

Unless McCormick has a big year, it's hard to see how Utah improves its big-play ability. More unknown receivers like Cory Butler-Byrd, Kenric Young, and incoming freshman Demari Simpkins could figure out how to unlock defenses deeper downfield, but in terms of proven quantities, Utah is high on potential efficiency options and low on explosives.

The only mention of Joe Williams
Senior running back Joe Williams, who took over for an injured Devontae Booker late in the year and did well, rushing 60 times for 308 yards against UCLA and Colorado. He suffered from the same efficiency issues as the bruising Booker, who was good at plowing ahead for two or three yards but rarely five or six. Still, he was more efficient, and he's only begun life as a regular.

    Their pre-season power rankings:
    1. Stanford
    2. Oregon
    3. Washington
    4. USC
    5. UCLA
    6. Utah
    7. Washington State
    8. Arizona State
    9. Arizona
    10. Cal
    11. Colorado
    12. Oregon State

I can't begrudge Zoobs the excitement of a pending invite...I remember how this place was on Pac-mas. I wonder, however, how much of the blame will be laid at the feet of "teh gays" if they don't get in.

    by SkinyUte
    2016-10-17 12:18:49

They seem pretty firmly convinced that is the source of all of their perception issues, and I can only imagine a non-invite would exacerbate that feeling.

ESPNs Pac12 blog continues to be entirely underwhelming

    by SkinyUte
    2016-10-16 08:36:21

Five P12 games yesterday, and they posted a grand total on one article about Stanford/ND. Not even a mention of the other games, and very little on their Twitter feed as well. I was scrolling through the ESPN College Football feed between 8-10pm last night, and there were multiple posts about every other game (including seemingly minute-by-minute updates on the SEC games), yet complete silence on the P12 front.

When we wonder why no one east of the Mississippi cares about football in the west, there's part of your answer right there. Do any of them even give a crap anymore?

One NEZ ticket for tonight, free to a good Ute home.

Mrs. SkinyUte decided she doesn't want to brave the wet and cold tonight, so I find myself with one extra ticket.

North End Zone, N21, right up against the entry portal. Please only take it if you plan to go...I'm not particularly interested in giving it to someone who is just trying to sell it. You'd have to come pick it up from me at work (close to the Maverick Center) before 5:00.

Only cost would be that you buy me a corn dog at the game. Shoot me a PM if interested, I'll be checking all day.

ESPN's P12 blog has been really disappointing so far this year

    by SkinyUte
    2016-09-14 09:23:09

I have really enjoyed the ESPN blog's coverage of the P12 over the last few years. This year, however, they seem to have cut back significantly.

In previous years, they would have breakdowns of every P12 game once it was over. They would post articles when big stories happened (like all the announcements yesterday). They would do previews of key games. There would be a bunch of stories throughout the week about things going on in the P12.

This year? Yeah, there's pretty much none of that. The only article about any of the P12 games last weekend was a quick one about ASU's RB who tied the TD record. No mention of the Fitts/Williams/CBB drama yesterday. And it's not just that there isn't much Utah related, there seems to be a dramatic drop in overall content that gets posted.

Really disappointed in their coverage so far this season. Hopefully it'll pick up once conference play starts.

Question as I prep my ammo for the inevitable "refs cost us the game" whine coming tomorrow at work

    by SkinyUte
    2016-09-11 09:43:16

Was that a P12 officiating crew or not? I'm hearing conflicting reports. I know the lead ref was Brad Van Vark, who is definitely a B12 guy (at least he was last year). Can refs change conference alignments?

Not that it really matters (the correct answer in all cases is a simple "scoreboard"), but I think it would hilarious to have them go off on a "P12 refs were biased against BYU" rant, then be able to tell them that it wasn't actually P12 refs and was actually refs from their best buddies, the B12.

    A few thoughts

    by SkinyUte
    2016-09-02 10:25:38

I'm a little concerned after last night, but not overly so. I think much of last night's performance had to do with focus, effort, and first game jitters, all of which can be worked out. A couple thoughts:

    1. Was it just me, or was damn near every snap down at Williams' ankles? Seemed like he had to pick everything out of the dirt, which was throwing off the timing.

    2. The new video board is awesome, but I ended up watching most of the game on it instead of the field. It felt strange, not sure how much I like it. As others have said, it was tough to look back and forth between the board and the field...my eyes had lots of trouble adjusting.

    3. Hopefully they get the play clock and down/distance issues on the scoreboard figured out. There were multiple times that they either had it wrong or nothing was showing at all.

    4. Liked what I saw from Troy Williams, but he needs to get rid of the ball quicker. A better/faster defense will eat him up on lots of those plays. Still, having a QB who can actually throw the ball is nice.

    5. Looked like there were multiple times when Joe Williams either missed the hole, or cut in the wrong direction. He didn't seem to do himself any favors in that regard.

    6. I'm hopeful that with the ass-chewing the O-line is going to get this week, that they'll come out ready to play next week. If not...yikes. They looked bad.

    7. I'm very interested to see what this defense does when we can actually mix up coverages, blitz, etc. Tough to take much away from yesterday, as that seemed about as vanilla as it gets.

    8. The new sound system was just kinda weird. Sometimes it would be loud and crystal clear, other times it sounded very muffled. I don't know if that was intentional (i.e. volume for Runge is different than commercials is different than refs, etc.) or if things just weren't calibrated very well. When it was loud and clear, it was amazing. When it wasn't, meh.

    9. Hope the crowd brings more energy next week. It just kinda felt dead in there last night.

My hope is that the team simply wasn't taking SUU very seriously, and that we'll see much more effort and energy next week. I still think we can be very good this year, but there's lots of things that need to get cleaned up in a hurry.

Here's what BYU fans will never understand about the LGBT issue

    by SkinyUte
    2016-08-08 20:27:39

BYU is a private institution, and as such, they are well within their rights to have whatever silly conduct, entrance, or other policies they want. They can choose to only admit left-handed people and kick out anyone who sneezes on a Thursday for all I care. If students choose to go there, they do so knowing that the policy is in place and have to abide by it. No one is questioning that, and I think that most people feel that they can and should be able to do what they want in terms of LGBT policy.

    HOWEVER

Other organizations - be they the P12, the B12, or LGBT advocacy groups - have every right to choose not to associate with BYU or criticize them because of those same policies.

BYU can choose to be discriminatory against whomever they want...and the rest of the civilized world can choose to turn their backs on them as a result. That's not anti-Mormon bigotry, it's not censoring BYU, and it's not religious discrimination. It's organizations confirming that BYU's particular behavior doesn't fit with their value set, and making decisions accordingly.

You don't get to have your cake and eat it too...sorry Zoobs.

Sexual assault victims are now being investigated by the "honor code" office. Seriously BYU...what. the. f**k?

    by SkinyUte
    2016-04-13 07:37:51

    I wish I was joking.

Brigham Young University students who are victims of sex crimes say they are investigated by the school and sometimes disciplined after reporting their abuse, a consequence that critics say silences victims and emboldens offenders.

At colleges nationwide, student victims are encouraged to report sexual assaults to schools' Title IX officers, charged with enforcing a federal law that guarantees students don't face hostility on campus based on their gender.

But at BYU, according to multiple students, Title IX staff routinely alert the Honor Code Office.

Students say Honor Code involvement means a victim who reports an assault faces possible punishment if she or he was breaking curfew, violating the dress code, using drugs or alcohol or engaging in consensual sexual contact — all banned by the code of conduct — before an attack.

I'm honestly speechless. This is disgusting.

CBS Sports NCAA "expert" thinks Cal is Utah

    by SkinyUte
    2016-03-17 07:16:14

Listen to this clip, starting around the 21 second mark.

His comment: "I think Cal is a better team than Oregon. I don't know what happened to them in that final game against Oregon".

Um...Cal didn't play Oregon in the "final game" (I can only assume he's talking about the P12 tournament), Utah did. Cal's last game against Oregon was Feb 11...and they won. That's some quality expert analysis there, CBS.

Speaking of Cal, their leading scorer (Wallace) has a fracture in his non-shooting hand. They haven't said yet if he's going to play or not.

Why I sorta buy the "we were tired" excuse

    by SkinyUte
    2016-03-13 10:26:29

Since the Oregon/AZ game went into OT, the Utah/Cal game didn't even start until 10:30 MT on Friday, and didn't end until after midnight. From my playing days, I can attest that winding down and letting the adrenaline settle after any game is really hard, much less after an emotional win like that. Factor in any press obligations, travel back to hotel, and I'm guessing our guys didn't get to sleep until 3 or 4:00 in the morning. This would also completely screw up any sort of typical gameday routine yesterday as well.

Don't get me wrong, Oregon is a far better team that simply handed us our asses last night, but I do think that exhaustion could very well have contributed to the "effort" we saw on the court. Take away the late night OT, and maybe we only lose by 15 instead of 30.

"Utah is gonna Utah, which means leave you hurtin’"

    by SkinyUte
    2016-01-29 19:39:54

ESPN P12 blog had an article "Buy or Sell? Someone other than Oregon or Stanford will win the P12" The writers were split, but dropped this gem:

In the South, the UCLA Josh Rosens look tough, and USC might be good because fewer folks will be saying so this preseason. Utah is gonna Utah, which means leave you hurtin’.

Say whatever you want about this team and coaching staff, but I love the fact that this is Utah's reputation in the conference. No matter what our record, no one wants to play Utah because they know they'll get punched.

    GO UTES!

ESPN's Kyle Bonagura with a couple depressing tweets this morning:

I would be very, very surprised if Utah ends up in Holiday or FF

overall season yes, but been told Booker injury, style of play, lackluster 2nd half affecting Utah's candidacy for HB and FFB

9 wins and second place in one of the toughest divisions in college football get us...the Sun or Vegas bowls. F**k that. What a huge kick in the nuts after such a promising season.

There are four ranked teams that are 8-3 (same record as Utah), all of which have a lower SOS, some significantly. Utah is 14, Oregon is closest (15), then Ole Miss (36), UCLA (41), and Washington State (53).

Taken by itself, yesterday's loss isn't that big of a deal. Factor in what was a stake, however, and that becomes the most disappointing loss in my 40 years as a Utah fan.

    by SkinyUte
    2015-11-15 08:47:55

Doubly so when you consider how we lost. Not even showing up until the 1st quarter was over, allowing the 1 completion by the horrible back-up QB to win the game, a ridiculous number of penalties, uncharacteristic mistakes (Bookers fumble), etc, etc.

This season will still likely be a success, but oh man...what could have been.

    by SkinyUte
    2015-09-12 17:13:26

I was looking for a video of the hit that got the USU player ejected last night, and a Google search pulled up this CB gem: "That was a pathetic call. He got lit up because he's small. That's it.".

Are you f**king kidding me? In what possible world is this not a cheap shot worthy of ejection. If one of our players did that, I'd be pissed if they didn't get tossed out.

Just booked the concert of a lifetime

    by SkinyUte
    2015-08-31 13:12:37

I just received my confirmation for the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise in February 2016. It's a 4-day Caribbean cruise that just happens to have 60 metal bands on board. It's basically a giant floating concert/party with about 20 or so of my favorite metal bands. Each band will play at least two shows over the four days, so I won't have to miss anyone. Last year's cruise had people from over 70 countries attend, and I've heard this year's show will have even more.

And the best part? Work is paying for it (I hit a fiscal year-end sales SPIF).

This is going to be epic...assuming I can survive that many straight days of beer and metal.

    Learning to ride a motorcycle

    by SkinyUte
    2015-06-04 16:57:00

I'm nearly 41 and have never ridden a motorcycle. While I doubt I'd go out and buy one to use on a regular basis, this seems like a pretty useful life skill to have. I've been looking into "rider schools"...figured I'd see if anyone has experience with one over another. Looking at these:

    - http://www.utahridered.com/courses/brc.ph p
    - http://www.utahmotorcycletraining.com/
    - http://www.timpharley.com/default.asp?pag e=learn_to_ride#

They all seem to be pretty comparable cost-wise, but I have no idea which one would be better. Anyone have experience with them?

Even Fox News is calling Spicer and Trump out as liars.
    (92 days ago, 3 stars)

Yup. The fact you consider obviously biased smear pieces to be unbiased, viable, and factual sources of information tells me we probably don't have much more to discuss on this topic.
    (93 days ago, 3 stars)

I've never understood the desire to put entertainers front and center at these things. I'd much rather listen to a female senator, congressworman, or business owner than vapid twits like Madonna.
    (93 days ago, 1 stars)

Know what? You're right. You win.
    (93 days ago, 4 stars)

Madonna's a blithering idiot. Always has been. How is this news?
    (93 days ago, 6 stars)

I don't need to sit through an hour of partisan propaganda in order to know it's partisan propaganda. That's not what we're talking about here. But if it makes you feel like you "won", then I suppose I'll have to live with that heavy burden.
    (93 days ago, 2 stars)

I said objective evidence, not partisan hit pieces.
    (93 days ago, 2 stars)

I don't either. However, I am interested by this phenomenon of screaming "FAKE NEWS" anytime something objective presents itself that conflicts with one's previously held view.
    (93 days ago, 4 stars)

Pretty sure they already did, sadly. Along with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Endowment for Humanities.
    (93 days ago, 1 stars)

Here's a time lapse aerial view of the mall from 7 hours prior, up through inauguration. Totally photoshopped by that notoriously partisan organization PBS, I'm sure.
    (93 days ago, 3 stars)

A couple thoughts on yesterday's inauguration speech
    (93 days ago, 9 stars)

Gathering en masse in support of the President: patriotic, awesome, freedom. Gathering en masse in opposition to the president: traitor, whiner, snowflake.
    (93 days ago, 2 stars)

I finally broke down and ignored IT yesterday. FFU was right, the board is much more pleasant.
    (93 days ago, 1 stars)

I think the one thing we can all agree on today as that rioters - regardless of their race, creed, gender, or political affiliation - are #@%holes.
    (94 days ago, 2 stars)

Never thought I'd have to put a fellow Ute on ignore, for any reason. Today has proven me wrong. You truly are a disgusting excuse for a human being and I'm sad you're associated with the Utes in any way whatsoever.
    (94 days ago, 4 stars)

Yeah, because isolationism is going to do wonders for the US economy.
    (94 days ago, 2 stars)

I get the distinct impression that Moose equates the worth of a person with their bank account balance. Shocking insight into his character, I'm sure.
    (94 days ago, 4 stars)

I'm just thinking it must really suck to live in that post-apocalyptic, third world hellscape of "american carnage" that he describes. If I was there, I suppose I'd probably be rooting for a change of scenery too.
    (94 days ago, 8 stars)

He could have saved a lot of time by just yelling "Murica...#%!@ YEAH!!" into the mic.
    (94 days ago, 12 stars)

I just have to ask...WTF is wrong with you?
    (94 days ago, 7 stars)

"Rethuglican" sounds just as stupid as "libtard". As soon as I see people use either term, it's a pretty good signal that I can ignore anything else they're saying.
    (94 days ago, 10 stars)

I'm glad yours hasn't. Mine already has, in a big way.
    (94 days ago, 1 stars)

Ironic, given the amount of crying we've seen about UFN being such a "liberal site".
    (94 days ago, 3 stars)

On inauguration eve, here's my sincere hope for Trump's administration
    (95 days ago, 14 stars)

To be fair, when you define "America" as "rich white men", then he most certainly did.
    (95 days ago, 0 stars)

    REPUBLICAN GOOD!! LIBERAL BAD!! 'MURICA!!!
    (95 days ago, 5 stars)

Of course you did, but not at the expense of everyone else.
    (96 days ago, 3 stars)

    And that's where we differ.
    (96 days ago, 3 stars)

I read the article. Of course they are claiming "IT'S THE LIBERALS!!"...you were expecting something different?
    (96 days ago, 0 stars)

True, but I do think there is value in learning how and why the "other side" thinks what they do.
    (96 days ago, 0 stars)

Nah, something I've been thinking about anyways. Politics isn't good for my blood pressure and I probably just need to stick to sports. Less stressful. :)
    (96 days ago, 1 stars)

Sure, framed under the context of "wah wah, too much politics".
    (96 days ago, 2 stars)

I'm sorry. I didn't realize something was preventing you from creating non-political, Ute sports-related topics for folks to discuss. My bad.
    (96 days ago, 4 stars)

Pro tip: You can uncheck the category
    (96 days ago, 5 stars)

Because when I think of impeccably credible sources with absolutely no reason to lie, Julian Assange is right up there at the top of the list!
    (96 days ago, 10 stars)

That's all well and good, but when I just got in a car crash, I don't exactly have the luxury to comparison shop for the lowest cost.
    (97 days ago, 2 stars)

The numbers are the numbers. We can only hope they scare those who govern to action.
    (97 days ago, 0 stars)

This is just a report on the repeal, which is what is moving forward now. Once a plan is announced, I'm sure those numbers will be re-evaluated and hopefully aren't as dire. I mean, they've only had 8 years to come up with a plan, so...any day now.
    (97 days ago, 6 stars)

From the CBO's ACA repeal report today: 18 million lose insurance year one, 32 million by 2026. Premiums immediately go up by 25%, and double by 2026
    (97 days ago, 2 stars)

    Forget it, he's rolling
    (97 days ago, 3 stars)

You sound awfully angry. You should try venturing out of the Fox News bubble sometime and seeing what the real world is like. It might surprise you how untrue and ridiculous many of those stereotypes really are.
    (97 days ago, 4 stars)

Out of sheer curiosity, what is it you do for a living that Zeous is convinced is so vile?
    (98 days ago, 0 stars)

    Wow. Judgemental much?
    (98 days ago, 3 stars)

Won't look at Trump's finances, won't look at potential Russian ties, won't examine conflicts of interest. BUT HER E-MAILS!! What a complete joke.
    (98 days ago, 6 stars)

I don't like putting people on ignore because then the board just looks strange.
    (98 days ago, 1 stars)

You and I obviously have different definitions of "entertaining". :)
    (98 days ago, 4 stars)

Sigh. This place was so nice for a while without Moose's constant attention whoring.
    (98 days ago, 7 stars)

Burning everything to the ground only makes sense if there is some semblance of a plan on how to build it back up. Is there one?
    (99 days ago, 1 stars)

That's the thing. No one, even the most ardent supporters of the ACA, claimed it was perfect. It was a decent first attempt, but there's lots of things that could be changed to make it better for both citizens and businesses.
    (99 days ago, 1 stars)

The "then what" question is the most pressing issue at this point. Pulling out the insurance rug and reinstating the pre-existing conditions statute is essentially signing the death sentence and/or bankruptcy papers for millions of Americans...
    (99 days ago, 2 stars)

In your mind, is he doing that? "Shaking it up", I mean.
    (99 days ago, 2 stars)

I'm genuinely curious about this as well. I'll even commit to keeping any commentary to myself in this thread (outside of clarifying questions), if folks are willing to answer. I really am trying to understand and figure out what (if any)...
    (99 days ago, 0 stars)

We went to one last year (?, might have been the year before). When even a 6 year old is bored and asking "is it over yet", you know it's bad.
    (100 days ago, 0 stars)

Apologies then, I totally misunderstood what you posted. Sounded like you were discounting the allegations, but that's apparently not the case. My bad.
    (100 days ago, 0 stars)

What is he blowing up to "monstrous proportions"? The allegations of connection to Russian interests are serious enough to be under investiation by US intelligence agencies, but it sounds like you're ready to just brush them off. That seems odd.
    (100 days ago, 0 stars)

The fact he throws John Lewis - JOHN F**KING LEWIS - under the bus as "all talk" at the start of MLK weekend is absurd beyond belief.
    (100 days ago, 3 stars)

If they didn't before, why would any of this matter? Besides, even if it's confirmed by 100 eyewitnesses and video evidence, Trump has to just tweet that it's the "liberal media" out to get him, and they'll immediately dismiss it entirely.
    (100 days ago, 4 stars)

Perry's at Energy, but your point still stands.
    (100 days ago, 0 stars)

I've stopped bothering to ask Trumpsters questions around policy and ethics concerns because they're not really interested in any dialog beyond "my side won, neener, neener". See Exhibit A in this thread.
