Going to Air Force this weekend...

    by MalUte
    2010-10-25 11:12:46

I'm sorry it's been so long since I last posted. I check the board everyday, but it's usually only for a few minutes and I've found it's easier to lurk around. I always enjoy the comments I find everyday from some of the best Ute fans.

Anyway, I'm traveling to Colorado Springs this weekend for the game with a friend and I'm looking for some recommendations for lunch in Denver on Saturday. We're staying two hours north of Colorado Springs and thought it would be fun to stop in Denver before the game (mostly since I've never been to Denver...). I tried looking up some "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" places, but it looks like Guy has never been to Denver. Any recommendations would help!

    You will be missed Zeeke

    by MalUte
    2010-08-04 17:13:37

I am extremely upset to hear of Dave's passing. He was a great friend to me and I can only regret that I didn't stay in great touch with him this past year.

I can't remember the exact time that I met Dave, but his wit and humor was infectious and we became fast friends about 2-3 years ago. I got to do the Utah State roadie in 2008 with him. I remember calling my dad between Ogden and Brigham City and told him how "slow and cautious" Dave was driving. My dad then jokingly told him to quit being a "Grandma" and to put the pedal to the floor. The nickname stuck and I used to always tease him about driving like my grandma. We had a great time in Logan and got to meet up with Welby, KTown, and friends at Mulligans before the game.

I also used to live down the street from Dave and every time he would get mad at me, he would proclaim, "You better watch yourself or I'm gonna send giant balls of fire down the hill and into your house!" He was one of my favorite Ute fans and he was an avid Jazz fan. He loved his girl, Rodi to death, who is the sweetest dog you could ever meet.

Dave, to say that you'll be missed is an understatement. Thank you for all of the great memories and for being such a great friend. I hope you've found the river of your dreams.

The day I decide to come back to UFN after a long hiatus, there are nearly 60 people in chat before 9 am. Did I miss something? ;)

You'd think it was the end of the world or something! Keep the hope alive, my fellow Utes. I have a feeling today could be a good day (and no, I don't have a "reliable" source to back up that feeling).

    Rivalry Food Drive Update

    by MalUte
    2009-12-10 18:11:46

The totals are finally in and Utah has swept BYU in the food drive for the first time ever, thanks to fans like YOU!

    Food:
    UTAH - 232,767 pounds
    BYU - 162,318 pounds

    Money:
    UTAH - $60,228
    BYU - $55,285

Both schools set records with BYU topping their amount last year by $10,000 and Utah topped their amount by $25,000! Our amount was much larger this year thanks to the sale of the BEAT BYU shirts! Also, Utah's 232,767 pounds of food is an overall record. BYU's 162,318 is the most they have raised in the 15 years of the food drive.

The Utah Food Bank estimates that each dollar donated can be turned into 12 pounds of food, which would mean that we raised 1,386,000 pounds of food through monetary donations!

I think it's safe to say that Utah fans and alumni are super classy! Way to go UTES!

A HUGE thank you to all who donated over the weekend to the Rivalry Week Food Drive!

    by MalUte
    2009-11-23 10:41:43

We saw an outstanding amount of money come in, especially from all of the "BEAT BYU" shirts we sold after the game. If you weren't able to purchase one, you can still get them at the University Campus Store. Also, a huge thanks to XTRMEUTE for getting his tailgaters to donate an impressive amount of canned food on Saturday!

We have five days left to sack BYU off the field! I know we can do it! U students will be at local grocery stores (particularly the Dans on Foothill and Olympus Cove and Smith's on 4th South, 9th & 9th, and 21st and 9th east) for the next three days taking monetary and food donations from 2-8 p.m. Make sure to visit one of these stores, donate, and get pumped for the game on Saturday!

Want to sack the Team Down South on and off the field?

    by MalUte
    2009-11-17 10:30:14

My favorite time of the year is just about here! Rivalry Week! I love that the Coogs are just a little more ridiculous than usual this time of year. Where all of their skeletons come out of the closet for us to bash and laugh at. I wouldn't trade this rivalry for anything.

This is also the time of year where we need your help. The University of Utah and that Team Down South's Alumni Associations team up to bring you the Rivalry Week Food Drive that benefits the Utah Food Bank for us Utes. We've extended the week to two weeks, which started last Saturday. The Utah Food Bank is at an all-time low and we need to help those out in need. We Utes are caring and giving!

Now, let me give you the skinny on the tradition of this food drive. This event has been going on for 10+ years and in the majority of those years, Utah has beat TDS in the monetary donations and TDS has beat Utah in the food donations. Well, we all know that Utah fans make more $$$ and are more successful than our foes down south, so we made an extra push last year to beat them in food donations. We were able to blow them out of the water in food donations (we had over 212,000 pounds of food!), but they squeaked by us in monetary donations. That wasn't the plan! So, this year, we have made a super big push to beat them in both monetary and food donations and we know that we will definitely beat them on THEIR field!

So, this is where your help comes in! It would be so great if the UFN community could come together to make an extra contribution to this food drive. There are several ways you can help!

    1. Donate money! You can donate ONLINE! This is especially helpful to those of you who live out of state. I know most of you who live out of state have lived here once before, so why not give back to the great state that you still love and support! You can donate any monetary amount here. You can also bring money to donate at the gates of the SDSU game this Saturday!

    2. Donate canned food! You can bring it to the SDSU game this Saturday as there will be barrels outside of each gate. If you have a serious stockpile that you would like to donate, please feel free to boardmail me and I will personally come pick it up from you. Simple as that!

    3. Purchase an official "BEAT BYU" shirt for $10! You can purchase them from now until November 28th at the University Campus Store. Not only will you be sportin' your Rivalry Pride, but you can also receive some great discounts at local businesses. For a list, please click here. All proceeds will go to the Utah Food Bank.

    4. Purchase a tennis ball in the annual Rivalry Roll (U students only)! If you ball is one of three that reaches the bottom of the HPER Highway first, you can win some awesome prizes, like half off a semester's tuition! For more details, click here.

    5. Participate in the Student Alumni Board Food Drive Contest (U students only)! We started this contest last year and I had an absolute blast doing it. Basically, the U student who donates the most pounds of purchased common canned or boxed nonperishable food items and spends no more than $15 (before sales tax) will win one of three awesome prizes, including a $300 scholarship, $100 University Campus Store gift card, or two tickets to the bowl game that Utah plays in this year! Details are strict on this contest, so make sure you read carefully. Trust me, this is a fun contest to participate in and you'll be doing something awesome for thos in need! For more details, click here.

Utefans.net is awesome and I know you guys will be there to help out. Let's sack that Team Down South in all aspects of this rivalry this year!

    GO UTES!

I've been told that my participation on this board has dwindled lately...

    by MalUte
    2009-10-14 12:51:50

And for this, I apologize. I have also heard that someone else swiped my icon and therefore confuses people when they post, thinking that it's me, but then realizing that it's not. To this, I say, get your own icon, icon stealer!

I am still around for the Utes. I think I've just lost interest in the interwebs.

Let me give you an almost-midpoint season MUSS update:

As some of you may know, I was the MUSS flag carrier for the first game against Utah State. And as most of you may know, I failed miserably at running it down the field. We were ill-prepared in having a sturdy pole and it snapped halfway down the field. I was mortified and walked back to the MUSS with my head hanging in shame. Luckily though, we found a replacement pole that worked out beautifully for the Louisville game and I'm really proud to have that flag out on the field for the opening run with the team. We're doing a stats contest right now to determine which MUSS member will run the flag for the Air Force game next Saturday. If you are interested in participating, and yes, you MUST be a STUDENT MUSS member, click here.

The MUSS is also doing an awesome giveaway for a trip for two to the Notre Dame game next year. The trip includes roundtrip airfare for two, two nights hotel, two tailgate tickets, and two game tickets. Details will be revealed either at the end of this week or next week. Trust me, MUSS members, you will have to do some serious work for it!

We've got a few things up our sleeve for the Blackout game and we want everyone to participate! If any of you are Raider fans (my apologies to RaiderUte), then I think you'll be pumped to know that we're turning the MUSS into Utah's own Black Hole. Details can be found on the MUSS-read page on the link above.

Also, DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE BASKETBALL MUSS!!! The MUSS has moved sections and we are now located behind the visitors bench! These seats are a lot better and students will be able to get right in the faces of Jimmer Fredette and the Team Down South company. We've got a lot of new and exciting things happening this season, so you will definitely want to sign up! Click here to join in on the action!

Other than that, I think things with the MUSS have been running smoothly this year. We ran into a few snags during the first game, but quickly fixed them. I'm happy that a majority of the students have been showing up to the games. We're working with the ticket office to see if we can make the lines at the east entrance move quicker, because I know this is why the MUSS isn't full until almost the end of the first quarter. If anyone has any suggestions, comments, concerns, complaints, whatever, please feel free to talk to me.

Hope to see many of you in Vegas this weekend!

I've gotten a lot of questions regarding buying MUSS T-shirts...

    by MalUte
    2009-09-01 09:06:31

I'm sorry to say that the MUSS t-shirts that we give out every year to MUSS members are NOT for sale. I know it makes sense to sell them in order to get the name out there and to make money, but to us, it takes away the exclusivity that MUSS members receive with their membership.

We are willing to open up the sale of blackout sweatshirts or anything else that we have with the MUSS logo on it, but the t-shirts are something that we like to keep within the MUSS itself. We are only able to order the right amount of shirts, especially this year with Under Armour, so we most likely won't have any leftover.

I apologize if this may disappoint some of you. I hope you understand.

    2 days! GO UTES!

I need your help! I'm just three days away from the MS ride...

    2009-06-24 14:52:30

First, a HUGE thank you to those of you who have donated! I really appreciate it and good karma is coming your way!

I have only raised $145 of the $250 that is required in order to participate in this ride. The MS ride is this Saturday up in Logan and if I don't have $250 in hand (or in online donations), then I won't be able to do my 40-mile bike ride.

I need YOUR help! Please consider donating to a great cause. I am riding in honor of my friend Sunni, who was diagnosed with MS two years ago. She is a great friend, mother, wife, daughter, sister, and PERSON.

Click here to donate! Every little bit helps, even if it's just a few dollars!

REPOST: Please help... My first MS bike ride

    by MalUte
    2009-06-15 11:15:10

I posted this on Saturday, but wanted to repost it for those of you who may have missed it. Also, a HUGE thank you to those of you who have donated! I really appreciate it!

So I decided at the last minute this year to participate in the MS bike ride that takes place in Logan every June. I've been wanting to do something meaningful now that I've graduated from college and I have lots of free time on my hands. I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to not only do an awesome bike ride, but to help others.

I am riding with a couple of co-workers of mine on June 27th. Depending on how much training I can get in in the next two weeks, I am going to ride either 40 or 75 miles. I really want to motivate myself to do 75, but since this is my first year, I might have to start out with 40.

As a requirement for this race, I have to raise a minimum of $250, which will go to benefit the National MS Society. I am riding on Team Sunni's World. Sunni is the daughter of my co-worker who was diagnosed with MS two years ago. She is a fantastic girl who is sweet and caring and I am honored to be riding on her behalf. You can read about her story on my personal page.

I am asking for your help. Every little bit helps and I need raise this money before June 27th. You can donate on my personal page. Even just a couple of dollars would mean the world to me.

    GO UTES!

P.S. MUSS member count is 3,811 (up 17 since Saturday!)

Suggestions for San Jose State game in September...

    by MalUte
    2009-05-31 12:02:36

I'm planning on booking my flight for the San Jose State game on September 12th today. I need some suggestions for where to stay and/or where to fly into. I'm thinking about flying into San Francisco the Friday before, staying in SF that night, and then driving to San Jose that Saturday since it's a 7:30 pm PT kickoff. Good idea? Bad idea? Other ideas?

Also, before you suggest driving to San Jose and then road tripping it to Eugene for the next week, I've already considered it and it's not in the cards for me. I can't take a week off from work and I'm already committed to the MUSS Bus trip to Oregon.

Will Conan O'Brien be the best Tonight Show host ever?

    by MalUte
    2009-05-30 00:05:57

    My answer: HELL YES!

Conan is a comedic genius. I have a weird sense of humor, so, naturally, I love Conan. He and his staff has come up with some of the best comedic bits out there. Favorites include: In the Year 2000, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, fake interviews with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Max Weinberg "The More You Know" PSA's.

Oh, and that hair! The man has a glorious head of hair. I'm just happy that I don't have to stay up really late to watch him anymore. And I don't have to suffer through Jay Leno.

    Something stinks in Ute Cheer-land...

    by MalUte
    2009-05-14 17:24:28

This was brought to my attention a couple of weeks ago, but it has become a serious concern to me this week. I've never really been a huge fan of our spirit squads (i.e., cheer and Crimson Line, but mostly CL), because those in charge were making poor decisions in the direction and appearance of said squads. Well, the decision making has really gone down the $#!+hole in recent weeks.

A good friend of mine's sister has been on the cheer squad for the past year. She's dedicated a lot of time and effort to supporting Utah Athletics and has had an incredible experience doing it. She is incredibly talented and totally gorgeous. She, her roommate, and one other girl from last year's squad were the only ones to try out again for next year. Elise (friend's sister) and Reagan (roommate) were both cut from the squad, while the other girl, Courtney, made it. Interestingly enough, Courtney is married to one of the assistant coaches, Rob Gramse. Both Elise and Reagan are capable of doing various stunts and are very talented at what they do. Some of the girls who made the squad couldn't even do simple cheer stunts, like a backflip.

Now, a little info on the coaching debacle. The cheer coaching staff has been shuffled over the past few years. Some of you may remember Lori Rupp, who was the head coach for awhile. She retired a couple of years ago and someone else took over. This person quit shortly after the Sugar Bowl this year and the Crimson Line coach was made interim head coach while they looked for someone else. The girls on the squad were told that this would only be temporary, but nothing has changed. The Crimson Line coach conducted cheer tryouts and cut both of these girls from the squad. So, this means that only ONE girl on next year's squad has previous college cheer experience. ONE. Athletics has said that once a new head cheer coach has been chosen, both Elise and Reagan could be reinstated, but nothing has been done.

This is a bunch of crap. It doesn't matter that one of the girls is a sibling of a good friend of mine, it is simply UNFAIR. It is unfair that these two girls weren't given a chance by someone who won't even be the head cheer coach next year. Our cheer squad is headed in the wrong direction, and every Ute fan out there should be outraged. Our cheer squad helps represent and support our athletic department, and while our athletic programs are on the rise, our spirit squads are some of the poorest in the conference. As president of the MUSS, it's important to me that we only have the best in our cheer squad because they reflect the U as a whole.

Here is Elise at the Sugar Bowl:

Reagan before the TDS game last season:

This is Elise doing the "Bow and Arrow," a pose that only she and last year's cheer captain, Mindi Tagge, could do.

If you ask me, tryouts should be done again, by someone who actually has experience in cheerleading and who will be running the squad next year. Both of these girls deserve to be cheering at games next year. They did an awesome job last year and there is no reason in hell that they shouldn't be apart of it for the rest of their college careers.

The best 5 years of my life... and why WebMonkey is the coolest friend a girl could ever ask for.

    by MalUte
    2009-05-07 22:56:19

After tomorrow, I will officially be a graduate of the University of Utah. It's been a whirlwind, but I think I lived my life to the fullest while in college. I didn't do much my first two years besides be studious. I think that was the best way to go. I then spent my last three years focusing on the best student group on campus: The MUSS.

I applied for the MUSS board on a whim two years ago. I decided that I really wanted to get involved on campus and nothing really interested me. I wasn't interested in ASUU and there wasn't a specific student group that I felt I could belong with. I then got an e-mail from the MUSS encouraging all members to apply for the board of directors. So I filled out an application, was interviewed, and then was told I had been accepted to the board. I am forever grateful to the person who chose me (his brother is a member of this site) and who forever changed my life.

I have always been a Utah fan, going to football games since before I can remember, but it had never been as intense as it has been over the past two years.

Now, I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but I've worked hard over the past two years to help make the MUSS the best student group on campus. I am especially grateful to my fellow board members who are the most die-hard fans on campus. Without them, we wouldn't be where we are today. I am happy to say that I reached the top of the MUSS and am serving as President this year. I love my MUSS board more than anything and the MUSS is a success this year because of them. One of my vice presidents is a frequent visitor to UF.N (Yes, I'm talking about YOU beebopnrocksteady!) and next year's football MUSS president is also among us. I'll let him introduce himself.

I seriously couldn't have picked a better school to attend. I have a meaningful degree from an outstanding institution. I am graduating tomorrow with a bachelor of arts in History Teaching with a minor in English Teaching. I have plans to apply for Teach for America next year and teach out of state for a while. I want to get out and experience life and teaching will make it an experience I will never forget.

WebMonkey came over to my house tonight with a very large present in hand. He congratulated me on graduating and thanked me for everything that I have done for him. Of course, I feel like I haven't done anything, but I'm happy he feels like I've made an impact in his life. I know I helped him through a hard time last year with his divorce, but I was just being a friend. I definitely feel like I don't deserve what he gave me...

Certificate of Authenticity and everything. How lucky am I?! WebMonkey ROCKS!

    Question about future basketball scheduling...

Who would you like to see a home and home deal set up with? I really hate to say it, but would a home and home with Boise State bother anyone? Any excuse to kick the crap out of the potato zoobs is fine by me...

Remember that post I made the other day about MUSS membership at record numbers? Yeah, I wasn't lying...

    by MalUte
    2009-04-26 14:28:13

I created that post just three days ago and we've jumped another 50 members since then. It's amazing how many people are continually signing-up and it blows my mind. In years past, we usually have a dead period where we'll sit around 2,000 or so for about three or four months and then we jump about 2,500 after freshmen orientation and when school starts in the fall. We've seriously never seen anything like this.

DO NOT WAIT TO SIGN-UP! DO IT NOW!

$30 for students, $90 for non-student guests. Best deal on campus! And the t-shirts this year are going to be AWESOME.

So what you're trying to tell me is that now not only do I have to compete with crimsonkim, but now a DG?! Oh dear...

    by MalUte
    2009-04-23 10:07:07

I'm totally kidding. It's great to have more female posters around. Now we can plan slumber parties with pillow fights. Wooooooooooooooooooooo...

Also, in other news, we currently have 3,355 MUSS members. The ticket office isn't willing to work with us on giving us more of the "student" seats, so once we hit 5,000, it's over. With freshmen orientations coming up in July, I am anticipating us closing registration before school starts in August. Seriously, people, if you haven't signed up for the MUSS, DO IT NOW. If you know students who haven't signed up, tell them that waiting is a dumb idea. We usually get about 2,000 freshmen to sign-up at orientations in July... I'm just sayin'.

For those of you who are students at the U... Come to Crimson Nights: Battle Royale!

    by MalUte
    2009-04-16 11:12:34

We are having our last Crimson Nights party of the year tomorrow night at the Union. The MUSS will have a large presence downstairs near the billiard tables. We will have MUSS Plinko (with prizes!), 2008 season highlights playing, and the Crazy Lady will make a cameo and will teach her famous dance!

The Student Alumni Board is partnering with the FUSS and is having a tailgate-style party outside in the Free Speech Area. Free hot dogs will be available, as well as information on how to sign-up for the FUSS if you are graduating this year.

Also, the Student Alumni Board is sponsoring the Battle Royale Tug-O-War Tournament! The winning team gets 8th row seats in the MUSS for the 2009 season! You must have 5 guys and 5 girls on your team. For complete rules and to sign up, visit: www.alumni.utah.edu/battleroyale

*The MUSS icon must be in a conspicuous location on the front of the T-shirt.

*All entries are subject to change.
*The entry design must include a sketch of your idea for the front and back of the shirt (ideas may be physically drawn on a piece of paper or electronically using a computer program). Please feel free to provide a typed explanation of your idea, but it is not necessary.

Michigan State sells "BEAT" shirts for every opponent they play in football. Nobody is calling them out for it. Ours is for a good cause. Waaaaaaa.
    (1610 days ago, 2 stars)

If they don't, they have them at the University Campus Store and the Student Alumni Board will be selling them after the SDSU game this Saturday at the gates. I bought mine last night and it's sweeeeet.
