How rich is this? Everett Golson transfer and the righteous SEC

    by MTM
    2015-05-14 10:44:30

The SEC banned its schools from accepting graduate transfers in 2011 after Mississippi accepted quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who had been dismissed from Oregon's team.

The SEC lifted the ban last year, but with restrictions that prohibited institutions from accepting players who had significant disciplinary or eligibility issues at their previous schools.

What does Utah, Arizona, Arizona St., Colorado, Iowa St., UCLA, and Washington have in common?

    by MTM
    2015-02-06 09:03:29

They all offered Travis Wilson out of high school.

Evidently a lot people who know more than everybody on this board saw something in him.

He has suffered the same fate Alex Smith did his first 5 years with the 49ers.

If he can get his confidence back I believe he can still be an effective enough QB.

I have a feeling 2015 is going to be a great season.

UtahUtes.com already has this listed as an 11 OR Noon start on PAC12 Networks.

I assume this can be considered accurate, yes? Just seemed a little early have it decided based on how the season has gone in relation to game times and TV.

    Clay's fumble and momentum

    by MTM
    2014-11-10 09:34:54

Certainly feels like that game might have been different had we gone up 14-0 early.

But I also remember going up 14-0 against USC in 2012 and RES was going wild and nothing specific happened to kill that momentum and we still lost....to a 7-6 USC team.

I feel terrible for Clay but, personally, I don't think it decided the game.

All we needed was 10-15 yards to give Andy a good chance at the game winner.

    QB play

    by MTM
    2014-11-02 14:31:45

Stats don't tell the whole story but I am a stat geek so humor me.

Since joining the PAC the best season turned in by a QB statistically speaking based on Passer Rating?

    Jon Hays 2012.
The year he was yanked for a Freshman Travis Wilson. I still think the Utes go bowling in 2012 if they stayed with Hays, but I digress.

    Followed by
    TW 2013
    TW 2014
    JH 2011
    TW 2012
    Thompson 2014
    Adam Schulz 2013

Using ESPN's QB Rating matrix which takes into consideration plays made with their legs-
    TW-2014
    AS-2013
    TW-2012
    TW-2013

Using ESPN's Adjusted QB Rating accounts for strength of opposing Defenses-
    TW-2013
    AS-2013
    JH-2012
    TW-2014
    TW-2012

I don't know what any of this means but found it interesting that for all the crap Jon Hays took he was best passing option we've had in 4 years. Or that Adam Schulz last year, adjusted for opponent, is better than TW this year.

The other thing of note is how much TW's production is off from last year. And that KT is way off Travis' numbers this year. KT can be more dynamic to watch but statistically he's not really close to TW due primarily to the number of sacks he takes which is much higher than any other PAC QB we've had and 4 times higher than TW 2014.

How bad is our drop problem?

    by MTM
    2014-10-20 22:26:15

I wondered (posted) this a few days ago.

We seem to have an inordinate number of dropped passes but do any of us know what is considered too many or even normal?

It is difficult to find stats for the college game but I found quite a few sites for the NFL that track this.

The best one I found looked at a 3 year period.

The very best drop 3-6% of catchable balls.

The worst in the NFL have drop rates between 10-15%.

To me that would suggest "normal" is somewhere between 7-9%.

I'm not sure what kind of adjustment one would make for college vs. NFL but I think you have to assume that drops would be even higher in college.

So I watched the 4 games I still have on my DVR-Michigan, WSU, UCLA, and OSU.

Since I am not aware of any official stat for drops I used my best judgement as to what constituted a catchable ball that was dropped.

Michigan-I counted only 1 bad drop. A slip screen to Dres. I did not count the pass to Bubba in the end zone because although it could have been caught it would have been a really great catch for a RB to pull off. There was another one to Scott that was questionable but the throw was not very good.

WSU-I counted 4 drops. 1.) A sideline route to KScott. 2.) KT's screen to Dres. 3.)KScott on a quick hitch pass, 4.) and Dres' sure TD near the end.
When I watched the UCLA game Rod Gilmore referenced 6 drops against WSU but I don't know where he got that number or which 2 passes went down as drops that I didn't see.

UCLA-I saw 3. 1.) KScott on slant. 2.) Clay on a crossing route. 3.) Scott again on an out pattern.
*Because of the recording of the replay I have I missed a couple series. TW's last one of the night and one in the 2nd half. Not sure if there were drops in those two.

OSU-I counted 2 obvious ones and 2 maybe ones. 1.) Dres' screen that he tipped for the INT. 2.) Dres on another slant. Not an easy catch but probably should have made it. 3.)Dres' TD that wasn't. I don't know if I'd call it a drop because he made the actual catch but had the ball knocked away. 4.)Tonga's crossing route. He caught the ball with his hands but had it separated by a hard hit with a helmet right on the ball. Tough one but we need those.
**Dres' almost TD with the PI called. Technically, not a drop but another tough catch that we need to start making.

    QB

    by MTM
    2014-10-18 09:50:21

I wrote a big, long analysis and then deleted it.

I'll just say I am torn about who the QB should be at this point and Iím glad I donít have to make the decision.

I watched the OSU game again. Well, I watched every offensive possession. In slow motion.

My football knowledge consists of playing QB in high school and then coaching HS football for 4 years.

I could make a pretty strong argument for either guy.

And I think the whole receivers dropping the ball will fix itself. I liken it to last year when we could not force a turnover on defense. I think the curse will inexplicably be broken never to return.

    College Game Day

    by MTM
    2014-10-17 09:28:39

There has been some discussion about ESPN bringing College Game Day to SLC next week.

The argument against it was that FOX has rights to the game so it would not work.

But.....Game 4 of the World Series is scheduled for Saturday night on FOX.

Any chance ESPN is able to buy rights to that game? And move kick off to noon or something?

Different situation than last night because the TV crew was still FOX but JAT.

When I was about 10 years old my 80 year-old Great Aunt told me 75% of the millionaires in the USA made their money in bowling.

Some people hate Kyle's style. It's like they'd be happier losing 45-48. I remember those days averaging 45 points a game and going 5-6 every year. It sucked.

Did he bring 5 cases of Oly?
    (214 days ago, 1 stars)

Was he speaking in Norman Dale quotes only?

That's all in the article too. Patterson convinced his OC that he was ready to commit to a new style. Again, Texas' point is he hopes KW do the same.

I think that is the whole point of Texas' post. Gary Patterson DID change after many years. He's hoping Kyle will too.

Hays made a mistake on that throw no different than Eric Rowe made a mistake biting on the crossing route as Lee blew right past him. (25 stars)
