How bad is our drop problem?

    by MTM
    2014-10-20 22:26:15

I wondered (posted) this a few days ago.

We seem to have an inordinate number of dropped passes but do any of us know what is considered too many or even normal?

It is difficult to find stats for the college game but I found quite a few sites for the NFL that track this.

The best one I found looked at a 3 year period.

The very best drop 3-6% of catchable balls.

The worst in the NFL have drop rates between 10-15%.

To me that would suggest "normal" is somewhere between 7-9%.

I'm not sure what kind of adjustment one would make for college vs. NFL but I think you have to assume that drops would be even higher in college.

So I watched the 4 games I still have on my DVR-Michigan, WSU, UCLA, and OSU.

Since I am not aware of any official stat for drops I used my best judgement as to what constituted a catchable ball that was dropped.

Michigan-I counted only 1 bad drop. A slip screen to Dres. I did not count the pass to Bubba in the end zone because although it could have been caught it would have been a really great catch for a RB to pull off. There was another one to Scott that was questionable but the throw was not very good.

WSU-I counted 4 drops. 1.) A sideline route to KScott. 2.) KT's screen to Dres. 3.)KScott on a quick hitch pass, 4.) and Dres' sure TD near the end.
When I watched the UCLA game Rod Gilmore referenced 6 drops against WSU but I don't know where he got that number or which 2 passes went down as drops that I didn't see.

UCLA-I saw 3. 1.) KScott on slant. 2.) Clay on a crossing route. 3.) Scott again on an out pattern.
*Because of the recording of the replay I have I missed a couple series. TW's last one of the night and one in the 2nd half. Not sure if there were drops in those two.

OSU-I counted 2 obvious ones and 2 maybe ones. 1.) Dres' screen that he tipped for the INT. 2.) Dres on another slant. Not an easy catch but probably should have made it. 3.)Dres' TD that wasn't. I don't know if I'd call it a drop because he made the actual catch but had the ball knocked away. 4.)Tonga's crossing route. He caught the ball with his hands but had it separated by a hard hit with a helmet right on the ball. Tough one but we need those.
**Dres' almost TD with the PI called. Technically, not a drop but another tough catch that we need to start making.

    QB

    by MTM
    2014-10-18 09:50:21

I wrote a big, long analysis and then deleted it.

I'll just say I am torn about who the QB should be at this point and Iím glad I donít have to make the decision.

I watched the OSU game again. Well, I watched every offensive possession. In slow motion.

My football knowledge consists of playing QB in high school and then coaching HS football for 4 years.

I could make a pretty strong argument for either guy.

And I think the whole receivers dropping the ball will fix itself. I liken it to last year when we could not force a turnover on defense. I think the curse will inexplicably be broken never to return.

    College Game Day

    by MTM
    2014-10-17 09:28:39

There has been some discussion about ESPN bringing College Game Day to SLC next week.

The argument against it was that FOX has rights to the game so it would not work.

But.....Game 4 of the World Series is scheduled for Saturday night on FOX.

Any chance ESPN is able to buy rights to that game? And move kick off to noon or something?

Different situation than last night because the TV crew was still FOX but JAT.

The wild and whacky PAC and why I believe the Utes are still alive

    by MTM
    2014-10-03 11:56:50

So all the talk this morning is that Arizona is for real. Someone even said they are the best team left on Utah's schedule and that may be true.

Last night was a great win for sure. But their other ones not so much.

    UNLV
UT-San Antonio (who is now 1-3) by a field goal.
    Nevada by a touchdown
Cal (who needed two OTs to beat an awful CU team) on a prayer

Their offense is spectacular but they are 90th in the country in defense.

I believe anybody can beat anybody top to bottom in the PAC.

And nobody is as good as their last win (AZ, UCLA) or as bad as their last loss (Utah, ASU).

Three penalties and the fumble were killers.

    by MTM
    2014-09-29 10:18:07

1st offensive possession the O moves the ball to the WSU 26 after a 3rd down conversion and we get a late hit penalty.

Instead of 1st and 10 at the 26 we're pushed back to the 41 and the first play of that drive is the only sack of the night back to the 50. Drive stalls. Punt.

2nd Quarter-The O drives the ball 55 yards to the WSU 31. TW misses a wide open Tonga up the sideline for a likely touchdown but it matters not because there is a chop block penalty on the play. So now it is 2nd and 25 at the WSU 46. Drive ends with a missed FG.

Right before half the O moves the ball 40 yards in less than a minute after Booker's run to the WSU 16. Holding moves it back to the 37 and we settle for 3.

3rd Quarter-Still up 24-7 Kaelin Clay takes a bubble screen, makes a nifty move on the DB and races 28 yards to the WSU 40, and God bless him, has it jarred loose. The only TO of the game. WSU scores on the next possession to cut the lead to 24-14.

My observations from last night's game

    by MTM
    2014-09-28 14:33:12

We really missed Tevin Carter. Marcus Williams was put in a tough spot with little chance for success.

Kaelin Clay is good. Maybe should be the #1 receiver.

I love how hard Davonte Booker runs.

Dominique Hatfield is good and I look forward to seeing him progress.

Justin Thomas had some nice plays.

I wonder if Travis Wilson is executing the read option correctly. Several plays looked as if either it was a straight hand off call or if he's just not reading the DE properly.

My guess is Kyle is not going to be fired unless the Utes win fewer than 2 games the rest of the season. Nor do I think he should be.

I met 3 UteFan.net'ers (2 in from out of town) for the first time yesterday and that was cool.

Looking at Sagarin the top 5 most difficult schedules this season are all PAC teams. Which makes sense.
    1-Utah 5-7
    2-WSU 6-6
    3-Cal-1-11
    4-ASU 10-2
    5-Stan 10-2

    For reference
    2012
    1.Mizzou 5-7, 2.AUB 3-9, 3.KAN 1-11, 4.FLOR 11-2, 5. OK 10-3
    2011
    1.KAN 2-10, 2.Iowa St. 6-7, 3.OK ST. 12-1, 4.A&M 7-6,5.TX 8-5

The best players in the NFL drop 3-6%. I think average for college is probably around 10%. And that is our average the last 4 games. It has been higher the last 2.
    (1 day ago, 0 stars)

That was on 2nd and 10 I think but I can't find it on the ESPN Play-by-Play transcript. No drop is a good drop but they are going to happen just like penalties, etc.

I'll go back and watch the last 4 games again and record down and distance for every drop.

I don't doubt that. I've never seen a different camera angle of the scrum. Nor of the ref "dropping the ball" when trying to spot it with :08.

I just posted this below but it appropriate to this thread too. Booker's helmet coming off changed the final minute.

Booker's helmet coming off kind of screwed up the plan.

I love that attachment play that I first saw from Arizona this year where the QB has the option to throw to the WR after the read option.

    You sound like Jack Handy

I read somewhere that Kyle said he was going to get an explanation today. From whom I don't know.

The wild and whacky PAC and why I believe the Utes are still alive
    (21 days ago, 5 stars)

That's what I was saying the other day. I'm not sure our O problems are TW's arm as much as the execution of the read option.

Whatever. We're not going to agree.
    (22 days ago, 0 stars)

RE: Think I agree with both of you guys - given the time left, it wasn't a bad call. Considering the end results, it was a bad call.

Hays made a mistake on that throw no different than Eric Rowe made a mistake biting on the crossing route as Lee blew right past him. (25 stars)
