What are some of the better tablets out there these days?
by GarthUte 2013-01-14 13:02:28
I promised my daughter that if she would stay in school rather than take a year off to "find herself"* that I'd buy her a tablet. If possible, I'd like to keep it under $200, though I'm guessing that there's not much that are worth purchasing for that amount.
*by finding herself, she means taking the advice of some freakin' hippie instructor she had last semester who encouraged her students to not allow their parents to tell them that majoring in a worthless major like post-modern flower pressing is no way support oneself in the real world and that working at a co-op where everyone donates something for the general good and only takes what everyone else says that one needs is the perfect utopian life that all humans should strive for.
my wife's grandmother passed away earlier today. She was one of the most kind, gentle persons who ever lived and the world is a lesser place now.
Some of you hear with Murray ties may know her, Mary Soffe. Her husband was Vaughn and he passed away 8 years ago. Since his passing, Mary has had health problems which have gotten worse each month, to the point that it was a blessing that she's finally gone. But it's still a sad day.
RIP Grandma. You will be missed here, but you're finally with Grandpa again.
I've started to watch a few bowls this year, but without a drum and feather on any of the helmets, I lost interest in about 5 minutes and played Red Dead Redemption. The Rose Bowl has been the exception...
Went to the game tonight, courtesy of LA Ute. (Thanks again for the tickets and it was good to chat for a bit). Anyway, a few random thoughts about the game....

With all the new faces on the team, it's tough to really get a good read on how they're coming together. It will be easier next year when I'm able to recognize the guys and know who has what strengths and weaknesses. For now, however, they seem to play rather well together, despite never having played together. This team looks better than any team Utah has had over the last 8 years or so.
Loveridge is the real deal. The kid has a heckuva body for only being barely 19 years old. If he allows himself to be coached - and there's no reason to think he won't - he's going to remind us of what kind of players used to be here.
Dubois likes to go to the rim. I like that. It seems like it's been forever since Utah has had a guard that can get to the rim.
Bachynski is fun to watch and will only get better. I don't see him being the best player on the team, but he sure reminds me a lot of Doleac when Doleac was a freshman and sophomore - smart and effective at what he does.
Washburn is still goofy looking. He doesn't seem like he's gotten any better since he arrived, but he is still the player who is most fun to watch when sitting on the bench.
I really didn't pay much attention to anyone else in particular, but the team as a whole is coming together. I don't see them making much noise in conference play, but they won't be the worst team at all in the league. I think in two years or so, this team will be very solid with Loveridge and Bachynski only getting better and leading the team to the Big Dance. That's right, I'm calling it right now. Utes go dancing in the '14-'15 season.
Finally, parking still sucks. There's that rather large but empty parking garage across the street from the HC. Here's my idea for the U about being a bit more accommodating for the fans. Let everyone park there. If I don't have the correct pass, charge me $10. That accomplishes 3 things:
1. There will be convenient parking for fans at a Utah sporting event.
2. It will generate some kind of revenue - even if it's a very small amount - but revenue is revenue.
3. It will justify the parking garage existing. If it's always empty, why the heck is it there?
why do so many folks seem to take losses so personally?
I realize that fans can get caught up in the emotion of games and say things in the heat of the moment, but I've never understood why, after the game - be it football or basketball - folks can't let it go.
I'm not judging anyone here and if I am, I apologize as it's not my intent. I'm just trying to understand why it happens, because for me, sports are an escape from the real world for a few hours. I love cheering for the Utes, but when the game is over, it's over. Yes, I much prefer when the Utes win, but losses happen too. Wins don't make my life better nor do losses make my life worse.
I guess the question I'm really asking is why do so many fans - of any team - allow losses to have such an effect on them?
Being that it's Halloween, this is my favorite quote from Ghostbusters II:
by GarthUte 2012-10-31 17:23:58
Louis Tulley's version of Snow White and the 7 Dwarves:
"So the 7 little dwarves had a limited partnership in a small mining operation. And one day a beautiful princess came to live with them. And they bartered housekeeping services for room and board, which was a real good deal for them because they didn't have to withhold social security or income tax or nothin', which you're really not supposed to do, you see, but for the purpose of the story, I think it's okay."
About the Cards/Braves game and the blown infield fly call...
by GarthUte 2012-10-06 12:40:40
The reason the umpire blew it during the Atlanta game was not because the shortstop was in the outfield. He blew it because he didn't immediately make the call. Had he put his arm up when the ball was in its upward trajectory, it would have been a good call. Rather, he made that call after the ball was on the way down.
That said, Atlanta didn't lose the game because of that blown call. They lost because they committed 3 errors. The Cards scored 4 runs because of those errors. Chipper Jones' error cost the Braves 3 runs alone.
Utes had a great start, but USC isn't going to fold like weaker teams would...
by GarthUte 2012-10-04 23:34:30
Sure, the Utes made some mistakes, but Utah didn't lose this game. USC won it.
The Trojans got punched square in the mouth, shook it off and turned it up a notch. The same thing happened on the other side of the ball. USC made the adjustments needed to shut down Utah's offense. There's just too much talent across the board on USC's team for Utah to match at this point.
While there are a number of kids on this Ute team that could be on the USC team, Star is the only kid that would start. And that's the big difference between the two teams.
I don't see Utah ever getting the same amount of talent as USC, but in a few years, there will be more PAC-12 talent and less MWC talent on the team. For now, all we can do is credit USC for winning this game, because bottom line, the better team won.
That said, I still love the Utes and won't stop supporting them. After all, like most all here, they're my team.
Vegas? A tv show called Vegas without Dan Tanna?! It's an outrage...
by GarthUte 2012-09-25 22:46:10
How can any show called Vegas not have Dan Tanna? No Binzer? And no hint of Angie Turner?!? If you're going to have a show called Vegas, it damn well better have a twenty-something Judy Landers as one of the cast members.
That said, the show wasn't too bad. The premise is the days of Las Vegas when casinos were just starting to really get going, with the city and the mob starting to get into just who is going to control the gambling industry. And while this is happening, people are getting murdered, so the mayor hires a rancher as Sheriff to solve the murders.
That's great and all, but it should not be called Vegas! Call it "The Rancher Who Became Sheriff" or something like that, because a show called Vegas has a PI named Dan Tanna who uses Judy Landers' cleavage to distract the bad guys while he breaks the case.
Write your Congressional representatives and complain, because there outta be a law.
