Utah's defense is good enough to beat anyone in the nation outside ashley judd.

Unfortunately, the offense is just too inconsistent. Too many guys disappear at inopportune moments.

And in this game, Jones is single-handedly beating Utah.

I have no idea what to say or think about the current situation with Whit and Hill.

    2014-12-28 20:06:57

I don't even want to speculate. But let's assume Whit is back--what does he do about OC? I'm going to throw a name out there that I haven't seen. Don't ridicule me; I'm simply putting someone out there. I don't even know what this coach is doing right now. June Jones. I know he resigned mid-season from SMU. This season was a disaster for the Mustangs, but Jones did have that program playing its best ball pre-death penalty. He also resurrected Hawaii and fielded some outstanding offenses.

I don't know if Jones wants to coach again, and if he did, if he'd want to be a coordinator. Just curious what the pros and cons would be.

It could have been a horribly off night for the Huskies, the likes of which they won't repeat, but I am confident the Utes are the second-best team in the conference. I have no doubt they can split with Arizona this season.

Great last play for Delon and the Utes, but that was easily the worst basketball this team has played all season.

    2014-12-20 22:41:28

I cannot believe how many missed layups I've seen (granted UNLV has some length down low). Stupid turnovers, and Wright is playing inexplicably very poorly.

Let's not sugarcoat this: UNLV is not particularly good. They've got some young, talented players, but they lost to Stanford and ASU by more than 20 each, and they had to have a furious rally and a buzzer-beater to beat mighty Portland at home.

I'm sure Larry will make necessary adjustments in the second half. Let's hope Wright and Poetl show up and Utah starts playing the way it should. This would be a very disappointing loss.

A loss is never fun or desirable, but I am very encouraged after this game.

There are fewer than five teams in the country that could take a late two-point lead after being down 21 to start the second half against the Jayhawks in Kansas City. This game clearly shows that Larry can coach.

Of course, you have to be disappointed in the final disastrous 10 minutes of the first half, but a team as good as Kansas will do that to teams.

Utah is going to win a lot of games this year, and they're only going to get better.

If you would have told me before the season that Utah would finish 8-4, 5-4 in conference play and would beat UCLA, USC and Stanford, I would have been thrilled (and probably disbelieving).

    by 77ute
    2014-11-29 15:51:55

So I think this season has to be considered a success. Still, the awful performance on Senior Day vs. Arizona, the choke job against WSU, and the shoulda, coulda, woulda against ASU leaves me with some emptiness. Easily could have been 10-2, 7-2. Of course, one could say Utah easily could've been 5-7, 2-7 as well.

The defense had some breakdowns today and throughout the year, but overall, you have to be satisfied with the way that unit played. Can't complain about leading the nation in sacks.

Offensively, this team flat out has to get better. We all know that, and Whit is fully aware that even a slightly above-average passing game wins the conference this season. Wilson was erratic at best, the o-line couldn't pass block, receivers dropped a lot of balls and ran poor routes, and I think the play calling was stifling.

I'm not sure what is going to happen between Whit and Christensen, and what will happen at the QB position. I wasn't thrilled with DC this year, but I would hate to see yet another change at the OC spot. As for QB, I'd love to see what this Isom kid can do. If Utah's offense can be consistently decent, 10 wins isn't beyond the realm of possibility next year.

Let me take a break in the Kaelin Clay/football talk to point out some basketball news.

    by 77ute
    2014-11-10 11:34:50

No. 2 Arizona played an exhibition game against some team called Cal Poly Pomona, a D-II school. The Wildcats trailed midway through the first half and ended up winning by 16. Stanford beat the same Cal Poly Pomona team by 3 a few days earlier.

What does this mean? I don't know, and I'm not sure you can draw much from an exhibition game against vastly inferior competition. But it tells me a 60-point win over a D-III team means Utah has the makings for a special year.

Let me preface my forthcoming statement by saying the difference between playing against Hawaii's defense and playing against ASU's defense is a huge chasm.

    by 77ute
    2014-11-01 22:54:28

Nevertheless, at halftime, Utah State's true freshman fourth-string QB is 11-11 for 162 yards. Is it too much to expect that a Utah junior QB that has started for more than two years against top-flight defenses could throw for more than 30 yards in a half?

If Utah had an average passing game, it would be a legitimate top 10 (or better) team.

The Utes have been outgained 255 to 97; ASU has been in Utah territory most of the game; and Utah has had no flow at all. I am afraid ASU is going to break this thing wide open in the second half. Hope I'm wrong.

I made some harsh statements about the program, and I did so out of frustration and emotion.

Let me say that Booker won this game. Period. The passing game is horrendous, the secondary gave up huge plays again, but it was Booker who got it done. Thank you!

Nevertheless, the next five games could be ugly if the passing game doesn't improve significantly.

BYU has three home games left: Nevada, UNLV and Savannah State. You'd have to quite the diehard BYU fan to sit in the cold and watch a scout team backup QB play against that competition (though I should be careful to ridicule Nevada; the Wolfpack knocked off Washington State). UNLV is awful and Savannah State is quite possibly the worst team in college football--Division II and Division III included.

    2014-10-04 00:18:08

First off, I never want to see a player suffer a severe injury, regardless of the team. I really don't. But this BYU team, even with Hill, was not a team worth mentioning making the New Year's Day six bowls, or whatever it's being called. If Hill doesn't get hurt does BYU beat USU tonight? I have no idea. But his injury had nothing to do with the fact USU rolled up more than 450 yards led by a backup QB and a linebacker running the ball.

I'm not happy to see Hill fracture his leg, but I am thrilled that this senseless talk about BYU making the first-ever College Football Playoff is over.

Now, it's on to Utah-UCLA. Time for redemption!

    1- Horrendous offensive line play
    2- Zero catches for Dres
3- Poor 3rd down/4th down defense in second quarter
    4- Boneheaded penalties

This game is an absolute must win for Utah. They cannot lose. There simply aren't many other probable wins this season.

But based on what I've seen out of Utah and out of other conference teams, it'll be a huge disappointment if Utah can't go at least 4-6 the rest of the way to qualify for a bowl.

There's no reason Utah shouldn't beat Washington State and Colorado. And suddenly UCLA doesn't look close to unbeatable.

Not even sure where to begin with this one. Up until the Arizona game in the tournament I thought Utah had turned a corner and was gaining some serious momentum for next season.

    by 77ute
    2014-03-18 23:25:41

But after these last two games Utah has looked no better than they did at the halfway point of last season. I don't get it.

Let's be honest, St. Mary's had a few nice players, but that team would finish 10th in the PAC-12. Utah beat a handful of teams much better. Tonight was a gutless effort and horrendous coaching. What a gigantic disappointment.

I'd love to know what was in Delon Wright's head tonight. The guy was incredible for 31 games this year. Against Arizona, and even more so tonight, he looked disinterested and lax.

I'm sure the Zoobs are loving this. I don't blame them.

And heading into the Stanford game I thought this team must might make the NCAA tournament.

Our bigs are soft; no one seems to have a killer instinct; no one has heart; no wants the ball. How Utah can beat a good ASU team at home by nearly 30 and then choke away a game ultimately to lose by double figures against a fourth-place WCC team in a rec center gym is mind-boggling.

I'm coping with this pitiful effort by watching the Utah-UNC Final Four game, which is currently on PAC-12 Network.

It's going to be a long few months before football season.

It's no secret I loathe BYU, but I am going to try and speak objectively.

    by 77ute
    2014-03-16 17:20:36

I struggle to see not only why BYU made the tournament, but more so, why they are a 10 seed (some of the pundits on TV agree).

Please tell me why a mid-major team that didn't win its regular season conference title OR the conference tournament and that lost games to Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland and Pacific made it to the tourney. I know, I know: BYU played a tough non-conference schedule. But they lost most of those games. Do wins over Stanford (a good but not great team) and Texas (a good but not great team) offset the bad losses they had? I guess so.

The selection process is a mystery to me.

And for teams like SMU not getting in and UNM only getting a 7 seed, I just don't get it.

    by 77ute
    2014-03-13 20:45:22

Arizona is a great team, and today they played as well as they've played all year. Utah, conversely, played quite poorly. A great team playing its best ball and a decent team playing at its worst is not a good combination.

It was easy to tell that U of A was dialed into this game. The coaches and players were well aware that Utah has gone toe to toe with them the past five meetings. The Wildcats were out to prove they are the class of the league, and they did just that. My hat is off to them.

As for the Utes, I'm sure Larry has already moved past the game. I hope the players have as well. Considering where this team was two years ago, this was still a nice season—not a great one, but a nice one.

    And it's not over yet.

Utah will surely get an NIT invite, and I suspect they will get a very winnable draw in the first game. It will probably be at home. I expect to see a solid effort and a W. It should (hopefully) be better than the last time Utah was in the NIT. That was in 2001 when a Dick Hunsaker-coached team (filling in for Majerus who coached just one game that year) put forth a listless performance at home against Memphis and first-year coach John Calipari. The previous NIT appearance to that, of course, was in '92 when Utah eased by Ball State and Rhode Island and squeaked by Arizona State to reach the semifinals.

Again, I'm trying not to take this massacre too hard. Blowouts happen. They even happen to good teams. They happen in the postseason. Utah has been on both ends before, sometimes in even uglier fashion (believe it or not). Think back to 1994 at the (then) Delta Center when Utah lost by 31 to a BYU team not even close to as talented to this U of A team. Just a year later, Utah was on the other end of a shellacking when it gave New Mexico its worst-ever loss in the PIT (I think it still stands as the worst loss ever in the PTT) with an 86-50 bludgeoning.

Utah will be OK. Wright will improve his jump shot; Loveridge will improve his toughness and consistency; one of the newcomers will prove to a significant contributor.

The NIT is a positive step for the program. Yes, the NCAAs would be great, and we all want the Utes back on that stage, but I think Utah has a decent shot of winning a couple of more games this season.

I'm a little concerned about the return of WSU's Lacy. He had eight 3s and 34 points in the loss at Colorado. Hopefully he's ice cold tonight.

Utes owe the Cougars some big payback. That game in Pullman was horrible.

According the headline on the front page of the college football section at ESPN.com, Utah's QB race just got one more addition.
    (336 days ago, 4 stars)

Add Brandon Jessie to the Miller, Doleac, Hansen and Jensen class.

    (414 days ago, 0 stars)

After watching Stanford get to the Sweet 16 and watching Oregon go toe-to-toe with No. 2 seed Wisconsin in the round of 32, I believe the Utes were a much better team than they showed in the last two games of this season.
    (433 days ago, 3 stars)

RE: Thankfully, this stressful season is over
    (438 days ago, 0 stars)

The disparity between how good Utah is at home and how bad they are home is wider than I have ever seen with a college basketball team.
    (438 days ago, 2 stars)

Not even sure where to begin with this one. Up until the Arizona game in the tournament I thought Utah had turned a corner and was gaining some serious momentum for next season.
    (438 days ago, 2 stars)

You're exactly right. And I hate to play this game, but imagine what happens if Utah doesn't inexplicably lose to WSU and hangs on to beat Oregon and Arizona at home.
    (440 days ago, 1 stars)

St. Mary's is down from what it has been, but it's still a decent team. I have to believe Utah is better and more battle-tested. But the fact this game is on the road makes me nervous.
    (440 days ago, 1 stars)

Head-scratching. I guess the moral of the story for Larry K and Chris Hill is this: don't schedule JC-level teams in the non-conference season.
    (440 days ago, 3 stars)

RE: BYU's RPI rank is 33. Can you find a team with a higher RPI that didn't get in?
    (440 days ago, 0 stars)

That's funny. In all seriousness, this game will be ugly. Very ugly.
    (440 days ago, 0 stars)

It's no secret I loathe BYU, but I am going to try and speak objectively.
    (440 days ago, 3 stars)

Obviously I was highly disappointed and disheartened by today's beatdown. But I'm trying to keep things in perspective.
    (443 days ago, 5 stars)

Non-conference schedule was lousy. That has been established. But Utah has beaten UCLA, ASU, Colorado and Cal. Not all that bad.
    (450 days ago, 1 stars)

Where was Jeremy Olsen? Oh, and the announcers were awful!
    (450 days ago, 3 stars)

It would be a huge mistake for him to leave early. He needs another year to develop a mid-range and outside shooting game.
    (457 days ago, 3 stars)

Utah now has about 100 running backs that will be competing for playing time this fall.
    (459 days ago, 0 stars)

You're right, he did not. Neither did Andre Miller.
    (472 days ago, 1 stars)

Go Utes! Absolutely have to win this one.
    (476 days ago, 2 stars)

I hate the "What if" game. I really do. But I can't help but wonder where this team could be if it had made just a few plays.
    (477 days ago, 3 stars)

Please don't remind us that Utah held a 12-point lead on the road at Colorado.
    (480 days ago, 6 stars)

Obviously, the WSU loss is haunting, but Utah shouldn't have lost to Washington. That's a mediocre team.
    (490 days ago, 1 stars)

I concur. He doesn't have the speed, quickness or elusiveness to play in the NFL. He's got decent hands, runs good routes and can break tackles here and there.

RE: 8 Players Who Disappointed at the Senior Bowl
    (490 days ago, 5 stars)

Cool! All I need is a DeLorian and Gray's Sports Almanac, and I'll be a billionaire
    (493 days ago, 0 stars)

That's cool to get a mention on ESPN, but it sure would be nice if the host would correctly pronounce Delon Wright's name correctly. Calls him "Deon Wright."
    (494 days ago, 0 stars)

Does the league choose the top players, regardless of position? If so, Wright is deserving.
    (495 days ago, 0 stars)

Yes, well Jim Boylen also recruited Matt Read, Jordan Cyphers, Jace Tavita, Antonio DiMaria, Preston Guiot, Chris Kupets, and Dominique Lee.
    (495 days ago, 3 stars)

I have stated this before, so forgive me, but if and when Delon improves on his outside shooting, he could be nearly unstoppable. I'm sure he knows this, and he will work on that aspect of his game.
    (495 days ago, 1 stars)

Imagine the 2011 D-line with him and Star in the middle.
    (496 days ago, 1 stars)

Yes, the loss at WSU was head-scratching, and the close losses to Oregon and Washington were heartbreaking, but it's hard to be too disappointed about being 3-3 in conference play at this point.
    (497 days ago, 4 stars)

Perhaps not too much different at all.
    (497 days ago, 0 stars)

Agreed. I'd be shocked if he left early. If he does indeed come back (which he should) and develops and outside shot, he's an All-American-caliber player.
    (498 days ago, 1 stars)

If Connnor Manning and Brandon Cox aren't as good as Austin Carta Samuels, then recruiting is truly failing.
    (499 days ago, 3 stars)

USC may not be a good team, but that was still a nice win for the Utes.
    (499 days ago, 4 stars)

Utes up 39-36. Had been up 36-29.
    (499 days ago, 0 stars)

Decent half. Still poor 3-point shooting. Thank goodness Tucker made a few. And without Wright, where would this team be?
    (499 days ago, 0 stars)

Utah will almost certainly have to win four games in four nights to advance to the Big Dance. That is tough sledding.
    (499 days ago, 0 stars)

Here's how good of a big man coach he was: Doleac didn't make his high school team as a sophomore; as a junior he was a bench warmer.
    (499 days ago, 4 stars)

Everyone associated with Utah basketball is going to look back on the Washington State debacle with dread the rest of the year.
    (500 days ago, 8 stars)

What about David Reed? Freddie Brown had a brief stint in the league as well. But your point is a good one. Whit has been very poor at developing the offensive talent in both coaching and playing.
