After watching Stanford get to the Sweet 16 and watching Oregon go toe-to-toe with No. 2 seed Wisconsin in the round of 32, I believe the Utes were a much better team than they showed in the last two games of this season.

Not even sure where to begin with this one. Up until the Arizona game in the tournament I thought Utah had turned a corner and was gaining some serious momentum for next season.

    by 77ute
    2014-03-18 23:25:41

But after these last two games Utah has looked no better than they did at the halfway point of last season. I don't get it.

Let's be honest, St. Mary's had a few nice players, but that team would finish 10th in the PAC-12. Utah beat a handful of teams much better. Tonight was a gutless effort and horrendous coaching. What a gigantic disappointment.

I'd love to know what was in Delon Wright's head tonight. The guy was incredible for 31 games this year. Against Arizona, and even more so tonight, he looked disinterested and lax.

I'm sure the Zoobs are loving this. I don't blame them.

And heading into the Stanford game I thought this team must might make the NCAA tournament.

Our bigs are soft; no one seems to have a killer instinct; no one has heart; no wants the ball. How Utah can beat a good ASU team at home by nearly 30 and then choke away a game ultimately to lose by double figures against a fourth-place WCC team in a rec center gym is mind-boggling.

I'm coping with this pitiful effort by watching the Utah-UNC Final Four game, which is currently on PAC-12 Network.

It's going to be a long few months before football season.

I struggle to see not only why BYU made the tournament, but more so, why they are a 10 seed (some of the pundits on TV agree).

Please tell me why a mid-major team that didn't win its regular season conference title OR the conference tournament and that lost games to Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland and Pacific made it to the tourney. I know, I know: BYU played a tough non-conference schedule. But they lost most of those games. Do wins over Stanford (a good but not great team) and Texas (a good but not great team) offset the bad losses they had? I guess so.

The selection process is a mystery to me.

And for teams like SMU not getting in and UNM only getting a 7 seed, I just don't get it.

Arizona is a great team, and today they played as well as they've played all year. Utah, conversely, played quite poorly. A great team playing its best ball and a decent team playing at its worst is not a good combination.

It was easy to tell that U of A was dialed into this game. The coaches and players were well aware that Utah has gone toe to toe with them the past five meetings. The Wildcats were out to prove they are the class of the league, and they did just that. My hat is off to them.

As for the Utes, I'm sure Larry has already moved past the game. I hope the players have as well. Considering where this team was two years ago, this was still a nice season—not a great one, but a nice one.

    And it's not over yet.

Utah will surely get an NIT invite, and I suspect they will get a very winnable draw in the first game. It will probably be at home. I expect to see a solid effort and a W. It should (hopefully) be better than the last time Utah was in the NIT. That was in 2001 when a Dick Hunsaker-coached team (filling in for Majerus who coached just one game that year) put forth a listless performance at home against Memphis and first-year coach John Calipari. The previous NIT appearance to that, of course, was in '92 when Utah eased by Ball State and Rhode Island and squeaked by Arizona State to reach the semifinals.

Again, I'm trying not to take this massacre too hard. Blowouts happen. They even happen to good teams. They happen in the postseason. Utah has been on both ends before, sometimes in even uglier fashion (believe it or not). Think back to 1994 at the (then) Delta Center when Utah lost by 31 to a BYU team not even close to as talented to this U of A team. Just a year later, Utah was on the other end of a shellacking when it gave New Mexico its worst-ever loss in the PIT (I think it still stands as the worst loss ever in the PTT) with an 86-50 bludgeoning.

Utah will be OK. Wright will improve his jump shot; Loveridge will improve his toughness and consistency; one of the newcomers will prove to a significant contributor.

The NIT is a positive step for the program. Yes, the NCAAs would be great, and we all want the Utes back on that stage, but I think Utah has a decent shot of winning a couple of more games this season.

I'm a little concerned about the return of WSU's Lacy. He had eight 3s and 34 points in the loss at Colorado. Hopefully he's ice cold tonight.

Utes owe the Cougars some big payback. That game in Pullman was horrible.

Right now, Utah is just two and half games away from going from ninth to second place. Five of Utah's six losses have come in the final moments (and the sixth, to Arizona, was close throughout). Just a handfull of plays puts Utah at 7-3 and in second place behind the Wildcats.

Hopefully this team will learn from its late-game failures and make the plays next year.

    2014-01-18 20:53:55

Isn't this about where most of us thought the team would be at this point? I don't want to play the "what if" or the "if only" game. Utah has played some great ball and some not-so-great ball. They will learn and continue to improve.

As for next week, I see no reason why Utah can't beat ASU. Arizona could be rough, but who knows, Utah could make it respectable.

USC may not be a good team, but that was still a nice win for the Utes.

    2014-01-16 23:18:40

Of course, after last week's heartbreaking loss to Washington and the pitiful effort against a bad WSU team, any win would've been good.

Now Utah needs to somehow take the energy it had tonight on the road.

I loved how the team came out in the second half. Utah basically put the game away halfway through.

I can't remember the last time a Utah player had 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists and 2 blocks. Probably never. I'll tell you, if he can develop and outside shot, he will be unstoppable.

A couple of thoughts on the game and this team.

    by 77ute
    2014-01-08 23:14:01

First off, I don't want to sound negative because there is no shame in losing by two points on the road to a team that just took the No. 1 team in the nation to the wire. Plus, Utah has lost three games by two points each time. One three pointer goes in each of those games and Utah is undefeated and probably ranked.

    However...

Can this team please work on its last-second, game-winning/game-tying possession? I wish Delon could have or would have driven to the hoop.

How many of these agonizing close losses do we have to endure? Last year at ASU and Arizona and at home against UCLA; this year vs. Oregon and then tonight. The bad luck has been uncanny. How many times since the three-point line was put in in '86-'87 has Utah gone 1-15 from the three-point line. Heck, just hitting 33% from deep wins this game by 10.

This team is oh-so-close to being very good. Eventually these close games have to go Utah's way.

Big game on Sunday against WSU. There's no reason Utah shouldn't come out with a win, though WSU did take Colorado to OT tonight.

Shooting 26% at the half, 0-9 from 3 on the road, and Utah is only down 5? Lucky, lucky, lucky this isn't a 15-point deficit (or worse).

    2014-01-04 16:11:07

OSU has some nice players. Certainly wasn't like playing Pepperdine or Loyola Marymount.

Brandon Taylor and Dakari Tucker are the MVPs of this game. And how about Delon Wright? What a stat line: 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals! If he could develop a more consistent outside shooting game, he would be almost unstoppable (OK, maybe that's a bit over the top, but hey, the guy is the best all-around player we've see at the U in a long, long time).

Utah should be able to split the upcoming road trip in Washington. I think sweeping it will be difficult, especially with Washington playing well in the first two conference games, but it's possible.

But I must say, I'm so glad Northern Illinois didn't beat Bowling Green in the MAC title game. That team would have gotten absolutely pulverized in a BCS game. Utah State is a good team, and they were prepared for the bowl game, but Northern Illinois is not a top-25 team, let alone BCS worthy.

Thinking back on the season, I can accept the loss at USC. By the time coach O came around, that was a good team.

    by 77ute
    2013-12-21 17:31:07

I can stomach the losses to UCLA and Arizona State, even though Utah was oh-so close to coming back against UCLA (despite six interceptions thrown) and even though they blew a 12-point fourth quarter lead against the Sun Devils. Those were two very good teams.

But after seeing how CSU came back to beat WSU, it is inexcusable to me that Utah lost that game to the Cougars. Yes, I know it was on the road and that Utah dug itself an early hole and fought admirably to come back. But Utah absolutely has to be good enough talent-wise and coaching-wise to get by any team that chokes up a 35-13 lead to a mid-level MWC team.

OK, here are some thoughts on tonight's game.

    by 77ute
    2013-12-14 17:05:50

I certainly think this is a winnable game, undoubtedly the best shot Utah has had since the win in 2009. Still, it's going to be very tough. I am nervous about this game.

BYU is always going to be a tough foe under Dave Rose. This particular team in my mind is superior to last year's BYU sqaud because they have multiple options. As much as I can't stand any BYU team under any circumstances, I have to tip my hat to what Dave Rose has built there. A Majerus-era Ute program they are not, but BYU still wins a bunch of games and gets to the postseason every year.

Here is what has to happen for Utah to break the seven-game losing streak:

1- Don't let a "Surprise" BYU player beat them. Haws will get his points. He's going to drive to the basket and get to the foul line a bunch of times. He's going to his some difficult shots. He's simply a good player. What can't happen is someone like Bartley IV to go off for 15 points-plus or for some other usual role player to near or exceed career a high in points.

2- Hope Carlino is off. The guy is very, very streaky. Sometimes he can't miss; other times, he kills his own team with poor shot selection and bricks from NBA range. Let's hope he's off tonight, because if he's hot from outside, I doubt Utah can win.

3- Get to the line, and make the free throws! It would be a huge advantage to get Mika in foul trouble. The guy has a punchable face, but he is admittedly very good for a freshman. If he's on the bench, it's obviously to Utah advantage.

4- Attack the zone decisively and hit the open looks. I am almost certain BYU will zone Utah much of the game. Utah can't be tentative and ultimately settle for 20-footers with two seconds on the shot clock.

5- Get off to a good start. Yes, this is a Captain Obvious statement, but falling behind to BYU by double digits in the first 10 minutes or less is a near death sentence.

6- Give the Ute crowd something to cheer about. I truly hope a loud and proud Ute crowd shows up and that they can help bring energy to the game.

A seven-game losing streak and 11 losses in the last 12 to BYU is tough to swallow. Of course, this streak comes during Utah's worst stretch of basketball in program history and during what is possibly BYU's best. Nevertheless, I would absolutely love for the streak to end tonight. If nothing else, a win tonight will go far to legitimize Utah as an ascending program. A loss (particularly a convincing one) will only support the notion that Utah's success this season has only been due to a piece-of-cake schedule.

Before BYU's streak of 11 wins in 12 tries, Utah had gone 22-5 against the Cougars, dating back to 1995. How nice would it be to return to a semblance of the mid-90s to mid-2000s dominance.

I have stated this before, so forgive me, but if and when Delon improves on his outside shooting, he could be nearly unstoppable. I'm sure he knows this, and he will work on that aspect of his game.
    (225 days ago, 1 stars)

Imagine the 2011 D-line with him and Star in the middle.
    (226 days ago, 1 stars)

Yes, the loss at WSU was head-scratching, and the close losses to Oregon and Washington were heartbreaking, but it's hard to be too disappointed about being 3-3 in conference play at this point.
    (227 days ago, 4 stars)

Perhaps not too much different at all.
    (227 days ago, 0 stars)

Agreed. I'd be shocked if he left early. If he does indeed come back (which he should) and develops and outside shot, he's an All-American-caliber player.
    (228 days ago, 1 stars)

If Connnor Manning and Brandon Cox aren't as good as Austin Carta Samuels, then recruiting is truly failing.
    (229 days ago, 3 stars)

USC may not be a good team, but that was still a nice win for the Utes.
    (229 days ago, 4 stars)

Utes up 39-36. Had been up 36-29.
    (229 days ago, 0 stars)

Decent half. Still poor 3-point shooting. Thank goodness Tucker made a few. And without Wright, where would this team be?
    (229 days ago, 0 stars)

Utah will almost certainly have to win four games in four nights to advance to the Big Dance. That is tough sledding.
    (229 days ago, 0 stars)

Here's how good of a big man coach he was: Doleac didn't make his high school team as a sophomore; as a junior he was a bench warmer.
    (229 days ago, 4 stars)

Everyone associated with Utah basketball is going to look back on the Washington State debacle with dread the rest of the year.
    (230 days ago, 8 stars)

What about David Reed? Freddie Brown had a brief stint in the league as well. But your point is a good one. Whit has been very poor at developing the offensive talent in both coaching and playing.
    (230 days ago, 0 stars)

Surprised Carl Monroe isn't on the list. He had a TD reception in Super Bowl 18.
    (231 days ago, 0 stars)

Denker got better as the season progressed. He was terrific against Oregon and Utah.
    (231 days ago, 3 stars)

Only slightly? UA will have a new QB as well (though that hasn't hurt them too much the last two years).
    (231 days ago, 2 stars)

Forgive me if this is a repost. But I saw that Kadeem Carey is going pro.
    (231 days ago, 6 stars)

Yeah, until this team can win a freaking game away from home we as fans really need to temper our expectations. No more NCAA tournament talk. Or NIT talk for that matter.
    (233 days ago, 1 stars)

Yep, just when I start to get excited about Utah basketball again; just when it looks like the program is headed upward agin, here are the Utes again at the bottom of the standings.
    (233 days ago, 2 stars)

Say what you want about Steve Fisher, what he has done at SDSU is pretty amazing.
    (233 days ago, 2 stars)

Oh, now I remember Wilcox Sr. Pretty decent player.
    (233 days ago, 0 stars)

How bad? Will he be out for a few games?
    (233 days ago, 0 stars)

Please remind me, when Wilcox was coming ou of Pleasant Grove High School, did Utah have a shot at him?
    (233 days ago, 1 stars)

Winning on the road isn't easy in this conference. There was no shame in Utah losing to the Huskies last week.
    (233 days ago, 0 stars)

Thank you, than you! O-line has regressed abysmally since he took over.
    (234 days ago, 5 stars)

Am I reading the box score correctly: Utah had only three assists the entire game? Wow!
    (237 days ago, 1 stars)

A couple of thoughts on the game and this team.
    (237 days ago, 1 stars)

Shooting 26% at the half, 0-9 from 3 on the road, and Utah is only down 5? Lucky, lucky, lucky this isn't a 15-point deficit (or worse).
    (237 days ago, 0 stars)

The point per game average is heavily inflated by the 70 points against a high school-level Weber State team.
    (237 days ago, 2 stars)

Yes, All-PAC-12 caliber. Doesn't mean he'll get that (not likely), but he has the talent, I believe.
    (237 days ago, 0 stars)

In the two games Utah has faced Washington as a PAC-12 member, Wilcox hasn't fared too well.
    (237 days ago, 0 stars)

Kenneth Scott is an All-Conference-caliber receiver. Not having him last year hurt the team considerably.
    (237 days ago, 1 stars)

One minor correction: Utah beat Cal in last year's tournament quarterfinal in OT.
    (237 days ago, 1 stars)

Good luck to Still. But this is no big loss at all for the Utah football program.
    (239 days ago, 0 stars)

    This is great news...finally!
    (239 days ago, 0 stars)

We heard rave reviews about McCormick in fall camp, but he never saw the field.
    (239 days ago, 0 stars)

Nice win today. Got pretty nervous when it got down to 4, but loads of credit goes to the coaches and players for putting the game out of reach.
    (241 days ago, 2 stars)

This is an absolutely huge game.
    (241 days ago, 0 stars)

    RE: We're baaaccckkk!
    (243 days ago, 0 stars)

    Thank goodness for this.
    (243 days ago, 3 stars)

Quite possibly the biggest regular season home game in a decade.
    (245 days ago, 6 stars)

I really hope Kadeem Carey goes pro.
    (245 days ago, 3 stars)

Playing in high school gyms is not easy.
    (245 days ago, 5 stars)

ASU was woefully unprepared today. Pretty embarrassing performance against a Texas Tech team that entered the game on a five-game losing streak.
    (246 days ago, 4 stars)

    I posted it first!
    (246 days ago, 0 stars)

I thought this was a misprint. And I thought St. Katherine was bad. Yikes! How sad!
    (246 days ago, 0 stars)

RE: I think there are a few things at play here
    (246 days ago, 1 stars)

Oregon under Helfrich just isn't quite the same. The last few games, in particular, the Ducks aren't nearly as explosive and sharp.
    (246 days ago, 1 stars)

Interesting thought, and you may be right.
    (246 days ago, 0 stars)

Back-to-back 5-7 seasons, seven offensive coordinators in seven years, and a seemingly cursed and mismanaged QB situation doesn't help.
    (246 days ago, 6 stars)

Late in his career? He was the primary punt returner as a sophomore in 2010. Had a TD against Iowa State that year.
    (247 days ago, 0 stars)

I will add this: it's funny how some of us are bagging on Utah for scheduling this game and winning by 70-plus points when two years ago the team won just six games and routinely lost by 30, sometimes to bad teams.
    (248 days ago, 1 stars)

Well, there were a couple of Utah natives on the St. Kats roster.
    (248 days ago, 0 stars)

I will say this: two years ago, Utah beat NAIA Division 2 foe San Diego Christian by two points.
    (248 days ago, 10 stars)

Agreed. If you're going to schedule an NAIA team, why not schedule Westminster.
    (248 days ago, 1 stars)

Seriously, I have never heard of a team outrebounding another team 71-12 . Delon Wright had 15 himself.
    (248 days ago, 2 stars)

Opinions: is this a good move for Jake?
    (249 days ago, 1 stars)

I don't much about Mitchell's basketball coaching career, but I'll never forget his performance in the 1988 Holy War football game.
    (249 days ago, 1 stars)

RE: clearly skurred about who he is facing in week #3 next year ... ;)
    (249 days ago, 3 stars)

RE: Well, the UW play the zoobs tonight in the Kraft Hunger Bowl
    (249 days ago, 0 stars)

There is probably no reason Wright, Loveridge or Taylor should even see the floor in the second half.
    (249 days ago, 1 stars)

At best. I can't see how the kid is drafted, frankly
    (249 days ago, 0 stars)

I have to admit, I am a little embarrassed as a fan that Utah is playing this team.
    (249 days ago, 3 stars)

I have to believe that the MAC defenses must just suck big time.
    (249 days ago, 3 stars)

Congrats to Utah State for its win last night. The defensive effort was tremendous. You could see Gary Andersen's residual influence in that game.
    (249 days ago, 8 stars)

I think it's safe to say that if Utah beats Oregon and Oregon State, they will be ranked for the first time since 2009. Actually, were they ranked that year?I don't recall.
