I am convinced that Utah will never have a good offense again. What an embarrassment.

Chris Hill, Kyle Whittingam: Open your pockets and pay an accomplished, experienced offensive coordinator whatever it takes. I'm tired of watching this ineptitude. Utah should be able to score 30 in a half against a team like San Jose.

Utah has got to stop scheduling BYU. I can't stand the following Sunday or Monday after the game.

If Utah loses (granted, it's been awhile), you never hear the end of the rubbing-in-the-face talk. It's almost as bad following a Utah win. The whining and complaining and the endless excuses are just nauseating.

Utah could beat BYU 77-0 for 20 straight years, and BYU fans would still think their team should have won.

Has anyone ever seen a field goal attempt not go end over end? Punts can be end over end or spiral, but not kicks.

    My turn for some thoughts.

    by 77ute
    2016-09-10 22:58:12

First, any win over BYU is a good one, and any Ute fan should be happy for the W.

However, that was one of the sloppiest performances I've ever seen. Six turnovers, a handful of drops, tons of penalties, allowing a fake field goal, bone-headed plays. It was painful to watch.

I hate to play the same game Zoob fans play, but if Utah hangs onto the ball like it should have, this game isn't even close. I'm not sure I've ever seen a game where a team turns it over six times and wins.

Joe Williams needs to be third string. I'm actually surprised he got more carries in the second half. His fumbles are inexcusable. And actually, on that third down swing pass on Utah's last drive, if Joe dives toward the marker instead of running toward it, he gets the first down, Utah eats up more clock, very likely scores a TD and the game is not in doubt.

Troy McCormick was dynamic in the first half. Why he carried the ball only once in the second half is a head-scratcher.

The defense was fantastic. BYU got to the red zone twice, even with six Utah turnovers. That last drive aside, Utah's D did its job.

Credit to Sitake for having the guts to go for two. I wouldn't have done it. But the play call by the almighty Ty Detmer was horrendous. Even Whit said after the game that he knew that would be the call.

The TV commentators didn't like the ejections. According to the rules, the decisions were correct. Sorry, but concussions are a serious matter, and players should absolutely be protected from them. Making contact with another player's head with your head (however slightly) needs to be called.

Jamaal Williams is a nice play, but I lost some respect for the guy. The Fox guys were saying that they were chatting with him and asked what he thought about Utah's tough front seven. Apparently Williams stuck his index finger in the air, twirled it around and said, "Whoopdy doo." Well buddy, you're now 0-5 against Utah. You had 2 yards in the second half and got hurt. Oh, and your QB got stuffed on the game-decisive 2-point conversion. Maybe you shouldn't run your mouth against a team you've never beaten in five tries.

I can't imagine Utah will turn the ball over six times again this year. This team will continue to improve.

I want to be careful how I write this post because I don't want to forecast the entire season based on 60 minutes of opening-day football.

    by 77ute
    2016-09-01 21:44:47

I don't think many of us were expecting Utah to score only 24 points. That was disappointing. Based on the emphasis on improving the offense and the attention that side of the ball has gotten in spring ball and fall camp, I really thought the offense would kick it into gear and score 24 ... in the first half. Furthermore, 436 yards against an FCS team doesn't appear like much to get to excited about.

On the other hand, Troy Williams going 20-35 for 272 yards and two TDs isn't too shabby. It's unfortunate he had to play three and a half quarters, though. I would like to see the completion percentage a little higher. The receivers did looked improved, but again, it's SUU.

The running game wasn't nearly good enough. Joe Williams had better straighten things out. Troy McCormick isn't going to be able to carry the ball 25 times a game.

Defense did what I thought they'd do. The punter was great. Phillips' missed FG was a disappointment.

On the good side, I think what could easily be considered a lackluster performance will give Whit plenty to talk about in the coming days. It also might lull TDS into some false security, thinking Utah is an overrated matchup. After all, in 2011, Utah opened the year with an underwhelming 27-10 win over Montana State. Two weeks later, Utah blasted TDS 54-10 and ended up going 8-5 overall.

So no, this wasn't the 56-0-type game we all hoped for, but I wouldn't be jumping ship.

A question I just thought of: If you could go back in time and have the power to directly change the outcome of one Utah football game, which one would it be?

    by 77ute
    2016-07-15 22:56:41

For me, it would be TCU 2010. Of course it would take a whole lot of changing given the fact Utah lost by 40.

Other candidates would be last year's Arizona game (if Utah had won that game they play for the PAC-12 title, and that's a game they should've won), Colorado 2011 (playing for the PAC-12 title in the first season would've been huge), or 1994 New Mexico (if Utah had won that one I think they beat Air Force the following week and go 11-0 in the regular season).

ESPN recently did something about "What could have been," a look at promising athletes who never lived up to expectations after college.

    by 77ute
    2016-05-05 12:05:30

They also talked about great athletes who maybe could have been even greater had they not retired early, gotten hurt, etc. (Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Magic Johnson). Perhaps you've all seen this.

Well, I thought I do a Utes version one. Here's what I've come up with, separated into football and basketball, with "Potential unfulfilled" and "Great but could've been greater." Here goes:

    Football, Unfulfilled expectations:

1- Tommy Grady. The guy was a four- or five-star QB out of college and signed with Oklahoma. NFL size, cannon arm, all the potential you'd want from a QB. When he transferred to Utah, Whit said he could throw the ball from goal line to goal line (I honestly remembering him saying this). Problem was, he had little between the ears. Grady sat behind BJ most of his career, and when he did get a chance, he flamed out, which the exception of a great showing in the 44-6 shellacking of UCLA in 2007.
2- Martel Black. We're going a little ways back here to 1987. If you don't remember or know of Black, think Jamal Anderson but faster. Think Mike Anderson but bigger. Black arrived on the scene as a JC transfer and stepped into the lineup in relief of the injured Eddie Johnson. He showed flashes of greatness but also had a little cocaine problem. He lasted one season at Utah and went to prison, I believe.
3- Marquis Wilson. Before Urban Meyer left Utah, he gushed about a committed local WR. Of course, Urban couldn't name the player, but it was Marquis Wilson, a four-star prospect from Juan Diego. Wilson played a little bit in '05 after Urban left and filled a key role in 2006. He indeed showed signs of being a go-to receiver. However, he was subsequently kicked off the team. No idea what ever happened to him.

    Basketball, Unfulfilled expectations:

1- Chris Burgess. Don't get me wrong, Burgess had some great moments at Utah, but this was a kid in 1995 whom some "experts" rated higher than any high school player other than Kevin Garnett. After riding the pine at Duke, Burgess played two injury-plagued seasons at Utah, never realizing his potential.
2- Deon Mims. In 1992, Rick Majerus signed this Midwestern big man who figured to bolster Utah's front court. Big and mobile, Mims could block shots and finish. Unfortunately, Mims never played a minute at Utah, as injuries derailed the one year he was here.
3- Silas Mills. About a year after Mims was on campus, Rick Majerus brought in a Chicago high school phenom whom he dubbed the "Best player he ever recruited." Unfortunately, Mills was kicked off the team, starred at SLCC and tried to come back to the U. He was ruled ineligible by the NCAA and ended up playing two decent seasons at USU.

Football, great but could have been greater:

1- Eddie Johnson. The school's all-time leading rusher is the only Ute in history to have back-to-back 200-yard rushing games—and he did it as a freshman. EJ had two 1,000-yard seasons. But I have always wondered how much more we could've done had he not missed a chunk of his sophomore season in '85 and, to a much greater degree, suffered a ACL tear in '87. He redshirted in '87 and wasn't the same as a senior in '88.
2- Chris Fuamata Ma'afala. The hulking 276-pound running back was nearly impossible to bring down. He had good speed to go with his incredible power. At times, he was unstoppable. Fu had three 800-plus-yard rushing seasons and left school after his junior year. Problem was, he was injury prone. He missed parts of all three of his seasons with nagging injuries and never seemed to be at full strength for more than a few games. Had he been healthy, I think he would own every Ute rushing record.
3- Brian Johnson. Not the most physically gifted Ute QB, but he engineered either the best or second-best season in program history. He willed his team to win in '08 against OSU and TCU. A knee injury at the end of '06 and his shoulder injury in '07, however, limited his throwing and running ability to the point where I think he could've been a borderline All-American in '08.

Basketball, great but could have been greater:

1- Britton Johnsen. Maybe it's just me, but I thought Britton's game was hampered not only by a few nagging injuries here and there but by Majerus' refusal to give him free reign. Britton had the quickness and agility of a 6-5 player in the body of a 6-10 man. He had a good Utah career, but I thought he was under-utilized.
2- Phil Dixon. Ute fans in the early '90s remember him as a smooth-shooting small forward. But Phil had tons of athletic ability. One of the best pure outside shooters ever to play at Utah, Phil suffered a horrible leg injury when he fell through a window as a freshman in 1990. The accident severed some nerves, and he never had the same explosion or leaping ability. Then, his senior year was cut short due to another injury. Phil had a solid Ute career that could have been much better without the unfortunate injuries.
3- Josh Grant. Josh was a very good player who often gets overlooked among the all-time Ute greats. He is among the statistical leaders in total points and rebounders in program history. His numbers would be even higher had a knee injury in '91-'92 forced him to redshirt. He returned in '92-'93 as a senior and put together another nice season, but he was a little slower and less productive than he was prior to the injury.

    Who are some others?

Listening to Whit's post-game comment's he indicated that the WR corps was very thin.

    by 77ute
    2015-12-21 15:47:36

He said Scott and Covey were less than 70%, which we knew going in. He also said Repp sprained his ankle during the game. Obviously, these injuries had an effect.

My question is this: If Utah is P5 team, why are they not building some quality depth at skill positions, especially receiver? Where is Keneric Young, Raelon Singleton, Delshawn McClellon and Kyle Fulks? Can these guys not get open against a below-average mid-major secondary? Why is Whit throwing a backup quarterback out there when there are a dozen other WRs on the roster? If they're not good enough to see the field (much less get open and catch a ball) against BYU, why are they being recruited? If they are seemingly good enough to be recruited, why are they not developing?

Where are the David Reeds, the Freddie Browns, the Steve Savoys, the Paris Warrens, the Steve Smiths, the Cliff Russells, the Daniel Joneses, the Rocky Henrys, the Kevin Dysons or the Bryan Rowleys? Utah has found these guys and developed them before, long before it was a PAC-12 school.

I guess part of the problem is what blue-chip WR wants to come to Utah, which has had a revolving door at OC and horribly inconsistent QB play for the past eight years? Another problem is WR development and coaching has been horrendous.

What returning receivers from this team and what newcomers instill any confidence that this unit is going to improve? And does Whit have the guts to cut Stubblefield loose and give some cash to a real WR coach?

    Who's going to show up?

    by 77ute
    2015-11-20 23:39:48

Which Utah team will show up tomorrow? The one that shocked us all by humiliating Oregon in Eugene by 42, the one that played solidly by winning on the road at Washington by 11 or the one that wet the bed last week against an injury-depleted Arizona team?

Which UCLA team will show up? The one that torched Utah-killer Arizona on the road by four touchdowns, the one that barely got by Colorado and BYU, or the one that got blown off the field by Stanford?

Both of these teams have been all over the place. My guess is the Utah team we'll see tomorrow will be something in between what we saw against Oregon and what we saw against Washington or ASU. And I'm thinking the UCLA team we'll see will be something like the one that played last week in a late four-point loss to WSU.

Please, Utes, come out hungry, be aggressive, and play to win!

I might get ripped for this forthcoming comment, but here goes:

    by 77ute
    2015-11-20 23:32:24

I hope Whit paid close attention to the BYU-UCLA game. Rosen had a horrible game against BYU. Truthfully, BYU should've won that game and would have had they been able to stop the run.

But in that game, Rosen was 11-23 for 106 yards and three picks. Of course, I realize this was just the third game of the season, but I definitely think BYU did some things on defense that made life miserable for Rosen. This was by far his worst game. He had a 74.8 rating; his next worse was 100.1 the week before against UNLV. He had a 108.0 rating last week. In that BYU game he had a paltry 5.7 QBR.

Additionally, Utah is going to have to get some turnovers and avoid their own. Joe Williams doesn't have to rush for 150 yards, but he does have to be productive. And I think Utah is going to have to open up the playbook beyond swing passes to Poole and Covey and hitches to Scott. The question will be whether anyone can get open, and if they do, whether they can catch the ball. The line is also going to have its hands full with Kenny Clark.

I've been pessimistic lately about this team. Honestly, though, I have this feeling everyone will step up and put together the best performance since Oregon.

What else can you say? I have no doubt Miami will have a great year, but that was a joke. And Utah still gets to play Duke and at Wichita State, not to mention a tough conference slate. It's early, so there's definitely time to iron things out, but that was a sad display of basketball.

    Thoughts on the hoops team.

    by 77ute
    2015-11-19 20:54:17

Bonham is much better than I expected. Loveridge isn't shy about shooting threes. He had a bit of a cold spell most of the second half, but 4 for 10 on 3s isn't bad at all.

What happened to Tucker's shot? He hasn't made a 3 yet. And Taylor hit a couple of 3s this game but he has mostly been way off. The team really needs him to get out of his slump.

Poetl needs to finish better around the rim. I wish he'd be more aggressive. I liked his effort in the second half.

Kuzma did what a lot of young players do: follow a couple of strong home performances with a big struggle away from home. He certainly provides much-needed energy, though.

Need Chapman to regain last year's form.

Utah needs to develop an ability to put the foot on the gas. This game was closer down the stretch than it should have been. That said, it was never in serious doubt. It's early, and I'm confident Utah will iron out these struggles.

All in all, not a terrific performance tonight, but definitely some positives. Tomorrow will be an interesting test against what appears to be a potent Miami team.

Oh, and those announcers were brutal. Was one of them related to Tubby Smith?

    Such a disappointing loss.

    by 77ute
    2015-11-14 23:51:21

Couple of key plays that turned the tide in this one:

1- In the third quarter Utah is up 24-20 with a third and 1 inside the red zone. Booker loses a couple and Utah has to settle for a field goal. A 31-20 lead so much more significant than a 27-20 lead.
2- On Utah's final drive in regulation (not counting the kneel-down in the final seconds), Smith drops a slant pass that would've given Utah a first down around midfield with under two minutes.
3- An obvious one: Wilson's slip/sack on second down on the final drive.

What is so maddening is how Arizona's receivers catch everything and Ute receives can be counted on for a few drops a game. Utah needs a serious upgrade at this position and have for years.

Being 8-2 and 5-2 in conference is nice, but Utah missed a real opportunity tonight to finally beat a Wildcat team that was playing with its backup quarterback for part of the fourth quarter and all of OT and that missing a host of defensive players. I really hope they can bounce back because UCLA will provide a huge challenge.

When you're playing at home and you pick off the opposing QB five times and get six takeaways overall, you should win by more than six. But you know what? I'm not going to complain about the W.

The defense deserves a massive amount of credit. That Goff kid is a heck of a QB. Yeah, he threw some bad passes, but many of them were due to the pressure. DBs covered well, too.

Happy about the win for sure. But this conference is a killer. ASU is up next, and the Sun Devils are starting to play well. The offense will have to step it up big time for Utah to pull out a win.

I want to be careful how I write this post because I don't want to forecast the entire season based on 60 minutes of opening-day football.

    (44 days ago, 1 stars)

In 1993 Mike McCoy was fourth in the nation in total offense. He threw for 3,860 yards in 12 games, an average of 322 yards a game.
    (59 days ago, 7 stars)

A question I just thought of: If you could go back in time and have the power to directly change the outcome of one Utah football game, which one would it be?

RE: Utah in Provo vs a team in 2017
    (126 days ago, 1 stars)

Oh, and Jamal Anderson was used mostly as a blocker for the first year and a half of his two-year career. He had much more to offer, and it's too bad Mac didn't see that until game six of his senior year.
    (147 days ago, 1 stars)

I always thought that if Steve Smith had played at Utah three years later (under Urban), he would have been a Heisman finalist.
    (147 days ago, 0 stars)

ESPN recently did something about "What could have been," a look at promising athletes who never lived up to expectations after college.
    (147 days ago, 9 stars)

I weep for someone who wastes what must have been hours digging up all that info, only to present it before a group that doesn't give a @#%&.

I will file this game away with the 1998 National Championship and the 2010 football game against TCU.
    (194 days ago, 5 stars)

Couldn't have said it better. After four years, the guy could do one thing: shoot threes.
    (194 days ago, 1 stars)

What a shot by Northern Iowa.
    (195 days ago, 1 stars)

What's wrong with Arizona tonight? Yikes!
    (196 days ago, 0 stars)

I'm sorry, but that was not the best effort by the Utes. Nice to be up by 11, but that was a super sloppy half.
    (196 days ago, 1 stars)

I love what Larry K has done here, but why can't we run a decent inbound play?
    (202 days ago, 1 stars)

Epic collapse by Oregon. Don't know if I've ever seen a team lose a seven-point lead in 10 seconds.
    (202 days ago, 1 stars)

So hard to say, but here's my opinion. I'll do it position by position
    (212 days ago, 2 stars)

No, the local media will talk about how Jimmer deserves another shot at the NBA and that none of the 100 coaches he's had has recognized or appreciated his talents.
    (214 days ago, 5 stars)

Sorry if already posted, but Delon Wright played 31 minutes tonight for the Raptors.
    (214 days ago, 29 stars)

Washington has some talent. They should be better than they are.
    (218 days ago, 1 stars)

I am beginning to wonder if Utah will ever beat Oregon again.

RE: I don't know what you guys are looking at, but that was a TERRIBLE call.

RE: With KS at the helm, zoobs think they can jump 40 spots in the recruiting rankings..this year
    (282 days ago, 1 stars)

A press conference introducing a new coach is always the same, and more over the top at BYU than many places.
    (283 days ago, 1 stars)

I assume this is in jest, but if Y fans really believe this, clearly they haven't looked at the schedule.
    (283 days ago, 1 stars)

RE: Brian Allen, Domo and Butler-Byrd all came in as WR's. Here is my question to you: What ETHICAL/MORAL responsibility does Whitt have to get kids to the NFL?
    (283 days ago, 1 stars)

So are we to believe to because an unproven Poly head coach and and a position coach, who also happens to be Poly, are now at BYU that the best Poly players in the West will now flock to the Y?
    (283 days ago, 2 stars)

Listening to Whit's post-game comment's he indicated that the WR corps was very thin.
    (283 days ago, 4 stars)

This offense is beyond pathetic. What an absolute embarrassment.
    (285 days ago, 3 stars)

My guess is a definite yes. I also question why he hasn't played more offense this season. One of the few times he was on the field offensively, he caught a bomb for a TD against ASU.
    (296 days ago, 0 stars)

RE: So considering all the factors going into this game, the only edge I can really see BYU having would be an emotional one
    (296 days ago, 4 stars)

    Interesting possibility to consider.

RE: I hope at some point during the game as Hobbs is returning a kick, you'll hear the Vegas bowl announcers say ...
    (296 days ago, 9 stars)

I loved that 90-91 Utah team. Some younger fans may forget or not realize they were 30-4.
    (302 days ago, 2 stars)

Oregon did come on strong at the end of the year, but the Ducks also gave up a ton of points and yards this year. Seems weird to give it to one of their players.

    (319 days ago, 0 stars)

Did Utah recruit Luke Falk? Call him a product of the Mike Leach system if you want, but I'd love to have him.
    (319 days ago, -1 stars)

Where has Delshawn McClellon and Kenerick Young been? Sorry, but Tyrone Smith has done nothing this year.

    (320 days ago, 1 stars)

    Such a disappointing loss.
    (320 days ago, 0 stars)

I'm stsrting to believe that for some reason when Utah plays Arizona that Whit turns the defense over to Jim Fassel.
    (320 days ago, 3 stars)

And once again Kyle Whittingham can't inspire his team against Arizona. Inexcusable.
    (320 days ago, 0 stars)

    Let's beat Arizona first.
    (327 days ago, 7 stars)

    (349 days ago, 0 stars)

No, this was not a pretty game. Yes, the passing game is still not nearly good enough. But at this point, a win is a win.

RE: I looked up those two games for fun. In 1990 they were 10-1 before their regular season finale at Hawaii, their only loss being at Oregon. They went to Hawaii and lost 59-28, then lost 65-14 to aTm in the Holiday Bowl. Funny stuff.
