Recap of presentation by Kyle Whittingham, Eric Weddle and Spencer Toone given last night...

Posted By: Mineral Ute
Date: Monday, June 13, 2005 at 09:38 am

Disclaimer: Whit, Weddle and Toone spoke to a group of LDS church members at a fireside (a fireside is a church meeting where a guest speaks to a group of teenagers, young adults or another group). I am just giving a recap of what was said. They spoke mostly about Ute football, but because they spoke at a church service, there may be some religious information posted - although I will leave most of it out and only post what I feel is necessary on a Ute sports board. For those who don't want to read anything about the LDS church, you have been warned...

- Whit began by pointing out a few things about the University of Utah football program. He mentioned that there are 39 returned missionaries for the Utes, and TDS only has 35. He then mentioned that 52% of the U football team is LDS.

- Coach then pointed out how tight a ship they are running at the U. Only one player, including those on the scout team, has to take a summer course to stay eligible. He compared that to USC where 9 players were kicked off the team this semester for grades, and a large group of others are in summer school to remain eligible.

- The gpa for the team is 2.7, the highest in his 12 years at Utah.

- Not one player has been in trouble with team rules or the law since he has been named head coach. He is proud of this, as other programs such as Tennessee has had 11 players arrested this year, and South Carolina has had 9.

After this brief general introduction of the team, Whit talked about Weddle. He mentioned that as a sophomore Weddle was the best safety in the conference. This year as a Junior, he feels he will not only be the best in the conference, but one of the top five in the nation.

Eric than got up and spoke about his conversion story to the LDS church. He joined the church last June. He was first introduced by a girl he started dating when he was a junior in high school. He says that she was modest, intelligent and had much higher standards than the other girls in school. Weddle said he was extremely impressed with her. He also said that he was impressed with her family. He fell for her pretty badly, but when she went away to school (she was a year older) they broke up because if she dated someone seriously she wanted to date someone who was a mormon.

The next exposure Weddle had was coach Whit, who came to his house to recruit him. He really like Whit and so did his parents. This helped influence Weddles decision to come to the U.

Weddle then talked about what a great first year he had - starting as a Freshman, all-american, going 10-2. But he says he feels he didn't have direction. He was intrigued by guys like Scalley who had such a positive attitude and demeanor, and had direction in life.

Spence Toone invited Eric over to his house and when Weddle came over the missionaries were there. He listened to the missionaries and later prayed about their message. To Toones surprise (more on that below) Weddle called him and said he wanted to join the church.

He didn't join until about five months later, when his parents warmed up to the idea.

The great thing about his story, is that Weddle is now engaged to the girl that he dated in high school that first introduced him to the LDS church. Weddle then became pretty emotional and said that his preparation to get married is the most important thing in his life- more important than the Fiesta Bowl or the upcoming year.

After Weddle spoke, Whit got up and said that he was sure a lot of the eligible women in the congregation were upset to hear Weddle was engaged. He than said "But Spencer Toone is a great guy too. He can't even get a date though. He did get a call from a girl last week, and the girl said 'Hey Spence, come on over because nobody is home.' Spence went over, and no one was home."

Whit introduced Toone by saying that he has earned a 4.0 every semester except one, where he earned a 3.9. Whit feels he is the best linebacker in the conference and will be playing in the pros after the U.

Toone began by talking about Weddle. When Toone invited Weddle over to listen to the LDS missionaries, Toone thought it was a disater. Toone said one of the missionaries was brand new, from a foreign country and didn't know English, and that the missionaries didn't get along and were fighting during first meeting with Weddle. He was shocked when Weddle called him a couple of days later to say he wanted to join the mormon church.

On to football, Toone only received one offer out of high school to Idaho State. Just before practices began, he found out that he didn't receive eligibility from the clearinghouse. His high school had failed to list a class on his transcript. So here he was, on the honor roll every semester in high school with a 4.0 average, and he couldn't play football. So he lost his scholarship to Idaho State.

He was contacted by Ricks college and they were able to pick him up. He played as a true freshman then went on his mission. While he was gone, Ricks turned into TDS North Campus and dropped their athletic program. When he got home, Utah and BYU recruited him hard, but he still had to pass the NCAA clearing house. After quite a few appeals, he was finally eligible.

Apparently, TDS did the most to clear things up for him to make him eligible. When Toone was trying to decide what school to sign with, coach Hahn of Ricks reminded him that TDS really went to bat for him by doing the most to clear things up with the NCAA. Toone than said, "I was very greatful to TDS as I signed my Letter of Intent for Utah."

Coach Whit then got back up and talked about his decision to coach between Utah and BYU. Coach said "I am the only one allowed to say BYU instead of TDS because I went there. Everyone else in the program is required to say TDS, so that tradition will not die."

Jokingly, Whit said he turned to a verse in Mormon scripture to make his decision for him. He read from D&C 133:48 which says "The Lord shall be red in his apparrel." He laughed and said that did it for him.

Coach then talked about the coaching position when McBride left. "I wanted that job so bad. I didn't get it and was devistated. I though it was the worst thing that could have happened to me, but now I realize I wasn't ready to be a head coach. Things happen for a reason - we all thought the season was over when Elliott was hurt against TAMU, but if he wasn't Alex never would have started. I thought it was over when I didn't get hired after coach Mac, but it happened for a reason. Urban Meyer was hired, and it turns out me not getting the job at that time was the best thing that could have happened." He said it was because of the things he learned from UM. "I learned more about being a coach from Urban in two years than in 10 years under Mac, and years of playing and coaching for Lavelle."

He is happy with the way things have worked out because he learned from UM in those years and now feels he is ready to be a coach. He is excited about Brian Johnson, the O-line, and the defense. He says the D will be the best they've had in years. He can't wait for two a days, and promised that football this year will be just as exciting as the last two.
