Other than your last statistic, I basically agree with everything you write.

You write that "death by firearms is at 20 year low in the U.S.".

That is not correct.

Gun homicides are at a 20 year low. Total gun deaths are not decreasing or at a low point. They are increasing.

In 2011 total gun deaths in the US were the highest in the period from 1999 (the earliest I could find data quickly) to 2011. In 2011 gun deaths reached 32,163, couple hundred less than national highway deaths in 2011 which was 32,367.

I don't have the statistics for 2012, maybe they're not compiled yet, but I think it's a safe bet that gun deaths exceeded highway deaths in 2012 for the first time since the 30's.

In the late 60s the auto industry squawked about government intrusion when NHTSA imposed nominal safety measures like seat belts and collapsible steering columns. From 1966 to 1973 there were more than 50,000 highway deaths per year. Fortunately, society told the auto industry to STFU, ultimately got them on-board, and put a lot of effort into all aspects of highway safety. The deaths per 100,000 dropped from a peak of 26.6 in 1970 to 10.4 in 2011 (your federal Government at work). I didn't look for it, but I think the decline during that period of deaths per 1,000,000 miles driven is even more dramatic.

It's a good thing cars were not around when the Bill of Rights was written. If they had been some NASCAR loving patriot would have forced an Amendment through saying the right to drive any damned heap on the highways at any speed shall not be infringed. Congress probably would have just defeated an anemic effort to register cars.

o NEW: So is the industry at fault? Is the five year old at fault? OR are the parents responsible for this horrible tragedy?

pangloss icon NEW: That's a sloppily written article by the KSL reporter - he conflates ''Gun-related deaths' with 'gun homicides' several times. (nm)
