Why is Utah ending the series with byu again?

I know you are all sick and tired of talking about the rivalry series ending. Most of the comments I've read here suggest that we're 1) now bigger than the rivalry, or 2) that it doesn't have meaning anymore since a conference championship isn't on the line, or 3) byu players are cheap and we don't want to risk injury once Pac-12 conference play begins. It seems there is only a small minority of the fan base that wants the rivalry to continue uninterupted, me included! Now that we're closing in on the last game of this series for a few years, I'd like to revisit.

So, a few questions...

1) Is there a team in the state/region that, by playing regularly and winning, gives us a better chance of landing the best local recruits than byu?

2) What is unique about the Utah vs byu rivalry that makes it differ from other in-state, non-conference series/rivalries (i.e. ND vs Purdue, Colorado vs Colorado St) which have continued regardless of conference affiliation?

3) What is the official statement regarding suspending the series with byu?

I despise byu football as much as anyone but I love the rivalry game. Yes, it's different now that we're in the Pac-12 but after all I've read and conversations I've been in lately - I still don't see the point of ending the series. Football is fun, we watch the games because they are entertaining and fun. I personally didn't have much fun watching the Northern Colorado game, nor did I enjoy the Montana State game last year. Are we going to suspend the byu game over the next 2 years and replace them with cupcakes? If so, Chris Hill and Kyle ought to turn in their man cards.

o NEW: i don't buy the hawaii thing, utah rarely recruits poly's on the islands anymore. the majority of the last poly recruits were either from utah, texas, or california. (nm)

o NEW: Ok, fair point. But how else can you prove (other than conf affiliation which means jack sh**) that you're the top choice in the state? (nm)

o NEW: Conference may mean little to you, but it does (and should) mean something to recruits.

o NEW: None of this means anything if Utah isn't already a winning program. If we sucked balls like Colorado why would recruits pick Utah over byu? (nm)

o NEW: Fine. But Utah being good or bad is not contingent on playing the instate schools.

o NEW: Again, fine. The point is that the decision to play or not play BYU and USU will not have a dramatic effect on our in-state recruiting success. (nm)
