Here's how I see it.

We play 9 Pac games and a B1G game every year. And as much as byu fans want to argue that the Pac-12 isn't very good, the truth is, Washington State and Oregon State(2 of the WEAKEST teams in the Pac-12 last year) are 2 of byu's BEST/STRONGEST opponents this year. Our schedule year in and year out will always be tremendously more difficult than byu's.
They can scream and shout about how they aren't running from anyone, but that's only because nobody is chasing them. There schedule is guaranteed to have a minimum of 6 non-BCS/cupcake type teams every year. They can afford to try to schedule tough teams because they are DESPERATE for games of any significance.
Utah already has at least 10 significant games every single season. If trying to balance out the 10 difficult games we face each year means we need to find a couple of lesser opponents, then so be it because that is the prudent thing to do.
And I say this as someone who wants to keep the rivalry going.
