-4 - Dawson (-7.1)

Team Efficiency
Utes 45 (-6.2)
Cal 71

First of all, Cal is the best team in the Pac12. They aren't impressive physically or talent wise but the overall team is really good.

Dawson tied his worst game of the year tonight (0/1 with 3 turnovers). The good news for the game is the Utes tied a season high with 33 rebounds. The odd thing was the two teams combined for a season low 10 offensive rebounds, although they were only 2 behind a combined season high rebounds of (69 vs Colorado).

This was a pretty average game for Utah. The major discrepancies off the season average were 5 less free throw attempts for the Utes off their average. Utah also had 4 more turnovers than they typically average. The free throw percentage was the third best of the year 81.8% 9/11.

The odd stat of the night, for the second straight game Utah allowed 18.2% from behind the arc both games being 2/11 for the Utah opponent. In fact, Utah's three point defense has been good over the past 5 games. Utah's season average for three point attempts is 18.2 but over the past 5 games was 13 (if you take out the 24 attempts from Arizona the average drops to 10.3). My point is they are defending the three better to at least allow less attempts as of late. The offsetting stat is Utah is allowing more free throw attempts over that same span. Season average 17.6 but past 5 games average of 21.4...the really odd thing about that is their personal fouls are actually dropping. Season average 16.4 fouls per game, past 5 games 13.6. So when Utah fouls it's been on the shot and giving up 2 freebies.

Overall Cal and Utah were both right on the average for a Utah game. Both teams shot poorly and the big difference was turnovers. Compared to the season average Cal was -2 on turnovers and Utah was +4. A +8 turnover margin combined with a -7 shots made is enough to tell the whole story.

As for efficiency, 3 players have had positive improvements in efficiency over the past 10 games (aka post-Jiggy). Martin, Storey and Hines, (the three guys you would expect) have been positive in 7 of the 10 games. Odunsi has been negative 7 out of the 10 games including a -9 off his average vs USC.

Three games left...bring on 2013!
