(Utah State) House Republican leaders delivered a resolution honoring the University of Utah football team Wednesday - with a backhand. First, House Speaker Greg Curtis welcomed "Coach Mendenhall." Bronco Mendenhall is the new coach of Brigham Young University's football team. Kyle Whittingham is the Utes' coach. Then Brigham Young University alum and Provo Republican Rep. Jeff Alexander, sponsor of the resolution, offered a sarcastic endorsement for the No. 4- and No. 5-ranked Utes while wearing a red cap. "Being the Cougar Club member that I am, in my mind, this is one of the biggest things that's happened here since 1984." When laughter was slow to start, Alexander said, "I know it takes you University of Utah graduates a little bit longer to understand." Explaining his new Utah hat, he said, "I felt like I was going into the state liquor store to buy a drink." Rep. Steve Clark, R-Provo, reminded U. President Michael Young - who "has the right name" - and Whittingham that their success started at BYU. Both went to the Provo school. With friends like these, (who needs enemies).
