To the Mac Apologists

To the Mac apologists...

Let me be clear - I think Mac should be fired. I think Mac should have been fire last year. 12 years of Mac teams have clearly demonstrated Mac's inability to coach his players to the level of their ability.

What in the world do the apologists think is going to change in his 13th year? Is Mac going to get smarter? Is he going to coach his players better? His he going to coach his coaches better? Is he going to pull a legitimate D1 quarterback and/or kicker out of his hat? It ain't going to happen - as long as Mac is coach we are going to get what we've got - dumb play, dumb coaching, and mistakes that a mediocre high school team shouldn't make. Not to mention an empty stadium.

The apologists say Mac deserves another chance because he improved on last season. BIG DEAL, improving on a totally unacceptable 2000 record is hardly a reason to subject ourselves to another year of Mac's ineptitude.

The apologists say Mac made the tough decisons by shaking up his staff last year. BIG DEAL, Mac made those moves only when it became apparent that it was either him or them. Those moves should have been made years earlier. Ver Steeg is clearly an improvement over TL, but if Mac hadn't waited until is own head was on the chopping block he may have been able to get an experienced OC instead of one who needs OJT.

The apologists say Mac deserves credit because he finally took responsibility for the loss. BIG DEAL, publicly taking responsibility doesn't make it any more acceptable and it doesn't mean that it won't happen again.

The apologists say it wasn't Mac's fault - it was Rice's, it was Ver Steegs, after all Mac doesn't call the plays or execute the plays. BULL, This is Mac's team, he has recruited every player, and has hired every assistant coach. The performance of the team reflects Mac's philosophy of football, his ability to manage the team, and his ability coach not only players but coaches.

The apologists say Mac has the second best winning record of any Ute coach and that he has taken us to more bowl games than any other coach. BIG DEAL, Mac's record is only marginally better (if at all) than Wayne Howard's record. And, let's be honest, the bowl history is related more to do with the number of bowls currently available than it does to do with Mac's coaching success.

The apologists say that Mac is a great guy and he loves Utah and the Utes. BIG DEAL, if being a nice guy and loving Ute athletics qualified someone for the job, half the Utes on this board could be head coach.

And finally, (at least for now) the apologists say Mac has recruited better talent to Utah than any other coach. THAT'S TRUE - and thats what makes watching Mac's teams all the more frustrating - the Utes have had better talent than every team they have played expect one (maybe two), yet Mac (yes Mac) put them in a position to lose three games that they lead late in the forth quarter.

Utah football has become just too frustrating to be fun anymore. I wish Mac were the Man. But he's NOT.

Mac must go....

GO UTES
