FOOTBALL: McBride: The as*hole of the month winner

In Monday's SL tribune they had an article on how Rice was fairing after his debacle against AFA. Now, don't get me wrong I've already conceded that you all were right about Rice. He's not as good as I thought he would be. BUT, after the game to the press Mac said all the right things for the first time in his career. "It's my fault." Then I read in this article that was all a facade. Apparenlty not only did he run down to where Rice was on the field and yell at him. But also did so in the locker room in front of the rest of the team.

I have major problems with this.

A: Mac knew what he was getting when he named Rice the starter. An average, at best, QB.

B: In the article it states that Rice first recieved the signal to spike the ball, then one to throw for the endzone. Rice thought this to be odd, but stated that he "knew that I (he) had better do it, because earlier in the year I (he) had changed some plays and got screamed at for it." WHAT? What in the hell good is a qb if he is not allowed to audibolize when he sees the opportunity? This policy of Mac's is assenine!

C: There is no question still that Rice screwed up the AFA game. But, under the circumstances Ver Steg caused a lot of confusion that led up to the screw up by changing the play three times. Rice stated the even other players who knew this were trying to stick up for him and Mac would have none of it. Mac is an A # 1 asshole! These kids are kids. Rice has gone all year and only made a few mistake (though crucial ones). If Mac has a problem with this, why is Rice playing? Obviously Mac only has a problem with it when it's convienant.

D: Facts are facts. Mac continues to NOT take blame for anything negative that happens on this team. He publicly humiliates the starting QB (deserved or not) in front of the team the qb is suppose to be leading. Ya, that's good coaching. That's why all successful coaches do it (tic).

As previously pointed out Mac's contract should be up soon. I've love Utah football and would be extremely sad without it in my life. But that said...If Mac doesn't go, I will. We will never be better then "redheaded stepson" with Mac at the helm. We will lose our good Assistant Coaches to better programs. Never a conf championship.

And if he goes and we suck.....I'd rather watch an exciting team go 4-7 than a boring one with a mediocre coach go 7-4 when they should've been 10-1. Flame away Mr. C (btw I do appreciate your insight. For a liberal commie you're alright).

Go Utes!

And you get the award for selective reading comprehension...

as well as moronic fan of the month. Yeah, let's be exciting and lose, that's the ticket to putting butts in the seats and brining in recruits. "Hey man, come to Utah, we won't win or have a chance to get on TV, but we'll have a couple exciting plays each game". That ought to work real well.

But as for your less than acurate statements on the article in the Trib, you seem to fail to mention that McBride didn't KNOW that Ver Steeg had changed the play. McBride was operating on the idea that the ball was going to be spiked so we could kick a field goal. I think if that's what I thought was going on, and what happened on the field happened, I'd react in a similar manner. The problem lies with Ver Steeg, why he did that I'll never know, and Rice for not making a simple decision to throw the ball away. Actually Rice's biggest mistake was not knowing how much time was on the gameclock, that's basic football folks. Yes Rice has struggled, but once again I have to ask this, has anyone on this board been at every single practice to see what everyone else is like? Nope, you haven't..but amazingly all of us seem to know exactly what should be happening.

It's eas y as fans to be monday morning quarterbacks/coaches, our jobs and future jobs don't depend on it, and we dn't have to worry about what a guy does during 5 practices in a week, we just worry about what we see in 3 hours of a game.

McBride's temperament

It's one of the things about him that makes him as successful as he has been (you know, MAFU and all that). I also think it's one of the things about him that has kept him from being as successful as he could be. It's a discipline thing. He lacks it, his players lack it.

Not flaming but here are some thoughts...

First the players especially the QB also have a responsibility to be aware of down distance and time on the clock. Rice if he is aware of the clock time doesn't run and we still get a chance to kick. Second Coaches yell at players and Lance should have been yelled at.

Mac did take blame. Players all across the country get dressed down infront of the team in the locker room, the jackass who didn't keep the locker room stuff there is the troubling one.

If we'd been this power house program before Mac came I'd agree but the 4-7 comment is the silliest thing I've ever read. The fact that it could very well be a majority view with fans is what really troubles me.
