Apologies in advance for the following ramblings, but they're just coming off the top of my head because I haven't been able to think straight about Ute football for a few days...
As I was driving home from the game the other night, KFAN was doing locker room interview with Darnell. I have never heard such cock-a-ma-me stuff in my life. He was saying stuff like "...we've got all the talent, personel, desire....blah, blah, blah..." then says something like "...the football gods aren't very happy with us...". What? Football gods? What a load of shit. It sounds like Darnell (and others) have been partaking too much in the Church of RonnieMac. What will be the next excuse? The magic mud that was brought in for the players to walk through was from South Africa, not South America.
It never fails. When they interview Mac after a tough loss and the Utes have played poorly, he always looks for excuses, rather than accepting the fact that the Utes weren't prepared, the game plan was all wrong, or they were overmatched and out-coached, etc. It's always some lame excuse like "...the players had the wrong &$^%&@# shoelaces on!!!! They're supposed to be RED, not WHITE!!!!...."
I don't care if Golden Whetman ever steps on the field to attempt another FG, this guy should be given his walking papers and and stripped of his scholarship. You can excuse the guy for not making his FG's, but there is ABSOLUTELY no excuse for not understanding when to run on the field for a FG or punt. How many times has this happened this year? Before this, I had never seen it happen, EVER!!!!
The whole Tate controversy in the second half of Saturday's game is the problem with this program in a microcausm. Lee and the offensive coaches decide not to play him because they hear second-hand information from another player that he's tired? What a joke. 'Nuff said.
I honestly thought Darnell would be able to contribute to attempting to turn this season around, but honestly, I think we would have gotten the same results if TD was still back there. First, does Darnell know how to read defenses, and second, does he know how to look for second and third receivers? How many times was Stevonne open the other night and Darnell had already started scrambling out of the pocket?
There is no sense in even thinking about Mac being let go at this juncture becauase it's not going to happen. The best thing that could happen is to have C-Hill try to buy his contract out at the end of the season and start an immediate secretive search right now. If Mac ends up staying though, I would have to imagine that Lee and Eck are going to be in the unemployment line the day after the season is over.
This is what rock-bottom feels like. There have been comparisons made between Majerus and Mac recently on this board. All similarities between the two should end with the fact that both of their names were in my last sentence. Majerus knows how to coach and get the most out of his players. He also knows how to develop players as well. In turn, because of this, he is highly successful. Mac has not shown he can do this, therefore we are stuck with continual 7-4 and 6-5 seasons (and worse) with constant mediocrity.
Let me echo the proverbial question once more....WHEN DOES HOOPS SEASON BEGIN!!!!?????
October 15th won't come soon enough.
