SO, I watched Portland St play Montana this weekend and there were some stunning things they are doing on offense in the Big Sky I thought I should report. First, passes to the tight end, perfectly legal and you can do it as much as you want, no limits as there apparanly are in D-I.
Second, it's possible to use a different formation on every down. You can even go three wide on first down and then have only 2 wide on second down. You can also--get this--have two backs in the back field. And even more amazing they seem to be using formations to create better matchups for the play they are running.
Third, did you all know there is more than one kind of screen. These two teams must have run 7 or 8 different types including get this some wacky type of middle screen that involved throwing to a running back. I didn't even know that was legal.
Fourth, speaking of throwing to running backs did you know you can put them out in pass patterns and apparantly throw to them as much as you want as well?
Finally, it's also possible for two teams to play a fun exciting football game that doesn't make you want to weep at the end of it.
I never knew the rules were that different in D-IAA
