McBride Coach's show summary...(long)

1) McBride said, "Boise first touchdown was due to Frank and Smith running into each other which negated a sack and allowed the qb to keep the drive alive." I didn't see the first quarter of the game but personally find the excuse a bit humerous.

2) He said, "The second touchdown was due to the Free Safety falling down." Another excuse which I didn't see but could predict.

3) "Andy Kassotis came back to early and now has put the rest of his season in jeopardy. He has alot of swelling and a dislocation of his kneecap." Put the blame on Andy. Don't we have Doctors that clear people to play?

4) Caller asked about discipline issues when Jones (last yr) and Andre Dyson pick up celebration penalties, not learning from that Bendinger does a dance is the endzone against BSU. McBride's responce was, "we got one celebration penalty last year (Jones) and the trib blew that out of proportion. Thought that each act was not premeditated and just emotion. Agreed that Boo's jig was uncalled for." Good comparison, who ever made the call.

5) I called and asked regarding the teams that have beaten the U have all stacked the line of scrimage (Fresno St. and BSU). Our reaction is to stretch the field laterally instead of vertically (asked him to comment). I asked him if he thought that Darnell could stretch the D downfield. McBride said, "Yes, the problem was that they didn't block it well and didn't have time to do anything." He said, "receivers were open downfield but either they didn't pick up the blitz or Darnell made a bad decision."

6) There were two question about recruiting. McBride said, "DL, QB, and good cover CB are the hardest to find. Someplaces are overrated to recruit, felt comfortable with their success in Utah, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Cali, and Hawaii." The other question was about SLC perceptions hurting recruiting. McBride, "didn't think it was a problem."

7) Caller asked about scheduling hard and soft teams. McBride said, "if you schedule is too strong it will effect your conference season."

8) Caller asked about scheduling schools with Turf. McBride said, "He would never do it in the future, also said he doesn't have much say in scheduling."

9) Caller asked about Utah football expectations. McBride said, "You should expect more. We as coaches expect more, and expect to get better every year." I was encouraged by the responce.

10) Brad "and company" Stone asked about L-Monroe. McBride said, "sometimes they're good sometimes they're bad. They put a lot of people on the line of scrimmage like BSU and USU. They put a lot of pressure on in passing situations." Since the Utes can bank on the same defences for the rest of the year, hopefully they can use this game to get ready for the rest of the season. Keeping in mind that there are no easy wins for this program.

Coach's Show Question

There was a caller that complained about the lack of discipline on the team. Specifically, he pointed to the Dyson interception and subsequent celebration penalty along with Bendinger's dance following his touchdown. For those of you that heard the coach's show, here is what I thought of that caller's comments:

1 - His comments were completely ridiculous. The Utes could use more discipline on their team (what team couldn't?), but to single out the celebration penalty is silly. If he wanted to point to Utah's lack of discipline, what about the 12 OTHER penalties? Furthermore, what a stupid thing to complain about after the game. Complain about the lack of execution on offense, about the horrible play-calling, about Darnell's passing, about the lack of emotion, about the injuries, but don't complain about a single penalty which shouldn't have been called and which didn't affect the outcome of the game!

2 - The call on Dyson was a joke. This caller said that when Dyson raised the ball, he knew there would be a flag. BULLSH*T!! There are very few touchdowns in any football game that aren't celebrated at least to the very small degree that Dyson did, and for him to say that he knew the flag was coming out shows me how little he knows about football, and how I'm glad he's not a ref.

3 - The dance by Boo can be chalked up to a lack of discipline, but to even mention Dyson's penalty and say his penalty was called because of a lack of discipline is laughable. If you were a DB and had just returned your first interception for a touchdown, would you not "celebrate" in ANY fashion? If not, then I don't think I would want you on my football team, were I the coach. Dyson was entitled to his celebration and more, and the ref that threw that flag is an imbecile.

4 - If I'm not mistaken, this was the first celebration penalty the Utes have had called on them so far this year, so, even if it were a legitimate call, how could it have been something they needed to work on?

Anyway, I had to get that off my chest. This call just struck a nerve with me.

For those of you that heard the call, is it just me, or did this guy bug anyone else too?

My response

In Response To: Re: Coach's Show Question (AbsolUTE UTE)

I asked that question.

I was using Jones conduct last year and the continuation of that conduct by Dyson (acknowledged as a weak call) and Bendinger as an illustration of what I see to be a lack of discipline. Many of the issues you identified above also speak to a lack of discipline. To me the issue is simple. Mac and others have repeated time and time again how the celebration penalty is subjectively enforced. Mac himself has said that in order to be safe you just need to put the ball down and celebrate on the bench. Mac recited in answer to my question all that he and his staff have done to educate the players. The problem is, after Dyson was called on it, Bendinger gets up and does a stupid dance. Sure the penalty wasn't called, although it should have been. But who celebrates a score when you are behind to a team which you should never lose to. Bendinger's actions showed me that Mac is not getting through to his players.

It was a joke, but Dyson should never have given the ref the opportunity to make the call. Throw the ball to the ref, high five your teamates, slap each other on the butt and helmet. They never throw the flag when the celebration involves your teamates. The falg is thrown when the celebration draws attention to yourself.

I was a DB and I did intercept a pass and return it for a TD one time. I'm sure I celebrated. I'm also sure that I didn't point the ball at the stands to do my best Deion Sanders immitation. We were on the road with refs from the other teams conference. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.
