A friend of mine happens to be the grandson of President Hinckley. The said friend was actually at the U/Y game in CS a couple of years ago in the company of the prophet. BYU scored a touchdown, and Hinckley stood up and clapped. My friend looked over at him and said "Traitor!" To which Hinckley responded "When they name buildings after you, you have to cheer for them at least a little." (not a direct quote but paraphrased)
Yes, I heard the story from the grandson's mouth.
Ask any BYU fan how many Presidents of the LDS Church graduated from the University of Utah and compare that number to how many graduated from BYU. I don't have a curent LDS Church Almanac, but I know the number from the U has to be several. The only one who graduated from the Y that I know of was President Ezra Taft Benson. If you want to impress them a little more, tell them that earlier General Authorities Elders James E. Talmage and John A. Widtsoe are former Presidents of the University of Utah.
I'll go out on a limb to say that I imagine more of the General Authorities of the LDS Church graduated from the U than the Y. I know some graduated from both, but I will bet that the largest number received their bachelor's degrees from the U. I remember checking the Faculty Directory in a BYU Bulletin several years ago, and found that to be the case. A friend of mine taught engineering at the U for many years, and he told me that nearly everyone in that particular engineering discipline faculty now at the Y were his former students.
A very good friend of mine here in Seattle (Boise State grad) told me the following: If you want to get married, go to BYU. If you want an education, go to the University of Utah or Utah State University.
For what it's worth, the members of my older single adult ward Bishopric are all from Idaho. The Bishop graduated from the U, the 1st Counselor graduated from USU, and the 2nd Counselor graduated from the Y. I think that's terrific!
