We left Salt Lake at 11:00 am sharp. Immediately upon leaving the State, we found ourselves in a barren wasteland. The term "god-forsaken" quickly comes to mind.

The next five hours seem to be a blur of snow, sagebrush, plains, and . . . oil refineries.

Fortunately, I maintained just enough consciousness to guide us safely into downtown Laramie, where we arrived by 5:30 pm.

Our first stop was at the site of tomorrow's beatdown: War Memorial Stadium. We found a parking space/hitch-post reserved for us.

The light system seemed to be working fine . . . just in case.

Most of you know that War Memorial Stadium is the highest football stadium in the U.S., at 7,220 feet above sea-level . . .

. . . but did you know that it is also the home of this unusually large cowboy boot? Why doesn't RES have something like this? Wow.

I would say from this picture that I represented the USA well!
Note 1: I know he was drunk and I outweighed him by triple but don't take my victory away from me, damnit!!!! He was the one that challenged me!
Note 2: the man in the tie was actually an employee of the bowling alley and acted as referee for the battle
Note 3: yes, the person on the right is, indeed, wearing a bowling pin costume

Majerus was an X and O's genius. He KNEW basketball in a way that nobody else, probably on the planet, does. Incredible.
I don't think Boylen is going to surpass Maj in terms of basketball knowledge.
However, I think Boylen has a chance to be better than Majerus at 1) recruiting 2) motivating 3) retention 4) effectively teaching 5) inspiring the players (and fans.)

We talk a lot about Utah recruiting more in the state of Texas, for football... That is becoming more of a factor for other MWC schools as well.
However I found this link to Rivals Texas Top-100 Basketball players (class of 2009) interesting...
5 of the top 22 players have verballed to MWC schools.
#11-Shawn Glover to Utah
#14-Marshall Henderson to Utah
#19-Garlon Green to TCU
#20-Matt Staff to UNM
#22 Jamaal Fenton to UNM
Utah also has a commitment from a JC kid, Matt Read, who has played HS, D-I, and JC ball in Texas
Utah's Boylen and UNM's Alford (or at least his staff) have solid contacts in the Houston area (which is the hotbed for Texas HS Basketball). The TCU factor can hurt either.
The more I think about it the more I am convinced that the ability to recruit in both California and Texas is a great long term benefit to Utah... and the rest of the MWC as well. That is obvious in Football but, I think the effect in Basketball might be greater than I have previously thought.

UteZone.com -- Utah Football, Basketball, and Recruiting Headlines
The Wright man
Mike Wright had a slow start to the season, but has caught fire lately recording over thirty tackles in the last three games. Wright is the middle piece of a resurgent linebacker corps for the Utes that in recent years has been lackluster. Defensive coordinator Gary Andersen has made it a priority to bring some playmakers at that position, and so far this season, mission accomplished
Q&A with Paul Kruger
Paul Kruger has been perhaps Utah's biggest playmaker on either side of the ball this season. The instinctive athlete has been a terror to opposing offensive lines and backfields, and has made more plays in the passing game than any other Ute defender with 5.5 sacks and four passes knocked down. Utah's budding star talked to UteZone.com about everything from defense to offense to how confident he is in Utah's special teams play. Click here to read more
Midseason recruiting breakdown: The offense
It's been a solid season thus far for Kyle Whittingham's Utah squad. The team is undefeated and is making some waves on the national stage with a number 13 rating. With the football season officially half finished, it's time to take a look at the state of recruiting for the class of 2009. With nine commitments already in the bag for the class of 2009, the Utes are nearly halfway finished with recruiting for the year
Utes still have plenty to work on
Believe it or not, the Utes are halfway through their regular season schedule and sit at the top of the conference standings with a 2-0 record, 6-0 overall. The fact that this team is undefeated at this point, and how they got there, is the biggest story so far. But chinks in the armor have been exposed and if the Utes want to run the table they must clean up some key aspects of an offense most people thought would be unstoppable
Grading the game
Utah's last minute come from behind victory against the Oregon State Beavers Thursday night ranks right up there as one of the programs greatest comeback victories of all time. Now riding a 6-0 record, the Utes have shown grit, determination, toughness, scrappiness, and a lot of other adjectives to describe the character of the team that walked off the field victorious Thursday night. More importantly however, is how the Utes got there |
