Call me a nerd if you'd like, but I spent the last 30 minutes or so figuring out the statistics for Marc Jackson and Travis Spivey in 2000-01, and Martin Osimani and Eric Osmundson in 2001-02. The purpose was to compare the stats PER 40 MINUTES for each guard in their first year with the Utes. For example, Travis Spivey scored 161 points in 758 minutes. That equates to .21 pts per minute and 8.496 points per 40 minutes. What this analysis attempts to do is to normalize the data to make a comparison.

These statistics are certainly not the only way to look at each player's performance. Obviously, Spivey (758 minutes) had a much bigger role in his first year than Jackson (125 m.), Osimani (225 m.), or Osmundson (260 m.) Spivey was a Junior in his first year with the Utes, while the others were all true freshmen. You can also argue that there is more to a players performance than shows up on the stat sheet.

In 40 minute averages, this shows points (Pts/40), Rebounds (Reb/40), Assists (A/40), and Turnovers (T/40). It also lists the Assists per turnover (A/TO) and the shooting percentages for each player.

  Pts/40 Reb/40 A/40 T/40 A/TO FG % 3P% FT%
Jackson 8.00 5.76 4.48 4.48 1.00 0.211 0.000 0.773
Osimani 5.87 4.98 4.27 3.91 1.09 0.500 0.500 0.750
Spivey 8.50 4.54 5.86 3.96 1.48 0.411 0.250 0.739
Osmundson 7.08 3.69 2.92 3.38 0.86 0.396 0.273 0.417

I will allow you to draw your own conclusions, which I am eager to read. Let me know if you have any questions.
