This
has been an interesting season to say the least. In my prespective, the
program was a victim of it's own success. Everyone, fans and media, jumped
on the idea of how much talent this team had and anointed them contenders.
I believe Jay Bilas even listed them as one of his Final Four teams in
the preseason.
But
mine is not to lament what could have been. I prefer to look at what was.
It was a memorable season in my eyes, and an eye-opening experience for
many, players, coaches, fans, and media. Success is hard to sustain. What
I remember of the year:
First
off, things I'd like to forget.
-
Bradley
tangling with Brown in Logan.
-
Spivey's
trash-talking and T in the conference tournament.
-
Hunsaker
losing his composure last night.
-
The
so-called "fans" chucking crap onto the court (I wanted to hide my face
when that happened).
Now
the things I want to remember about this season:
-
Listening
on radio as the team gutted out a win over Memphis in Puerto Rico.
-
Burgess
and Britton's effort in the first Wyoming game.
-
Little-used
Trace Caton canning a three as the half wound down against BYU.
-
The
entire CSU game at home (the best by far the team played).
-
Burgess
rejecting two Wesley shots in a row.
-
Marc
Jackson's incredible second half against Wyoming, including:
-
Jackson
climbing in with Davis and Nsonwu-amadi for a rebound, then outleting to
Jeff Johnson for a dunk.
-
Cullen's
out-of-bounds play lob to Britton against USC.
-
Cullen
draining three straight triples to squelch a UNLV run in Vegas.
-
Spivey
calmly canning two free throws in the Pit to put the game away.
-
Britton's
incredible fake against BYU.
-
Puzey's
unorthodox putback against Pepperdine.
-
Jacobson
canning the three from 24 ft against BYU (by the time I'm old, that will
have become an offbalance halfcourt shot that hit nothing but net!)
-
Nate
kissing the floor in his (supposedly) last home game.
-
Allred
playing like a man possessed against LBSU.
-
Jeff
Johnson grabbing two offensive rebounds on missed FT's to hold of New Mexico
at home.
-
Bradley
nailing the three to send the Wyoming game to overtime.
While
the team didn't fit the bill of teams past, I was still entertained. While
they had their shortcomings, they were far from boring. When they succeeded,
I was happy. When they failed, I reflected in their mortality. When they
were down, I rooted for them to dig deeper (whether they did or not). It
was a year of what could of been, but it was also a year of what was: A
team with a huge personnel turnover that played in fits and starts, yet
still managed to grab a share of a conference title.
Remember
folks, when it is all said and done, it is only a game.
