10 Reasons Why Watching the Utes Live is Better Than Watching the Jazz Live

Attending the Jazz game at the Delta Center last night put these thoughts in my head:

1. - Pro coaches are irrelevant. Due to personalities, egos, guaranteed contracts and no zones, etc., they are relegated to storming the sidelines and trying to work the officials. The biggest move they can make during the game is to call a time out.
1a. - College coaches can switch on the fly (especially defenses), they make a huge difference both before and during a game, and they also get to work the refs and call time outs.

2. - Jazz fans know NOTHING about the game, just the players.
2a - Ute fans know the game AND the players.

3. - Pro referees are tyrants who answer to no one, make "automatic" calls and give certain players star treatment.
3a - College officials are just about 10% better in those three departments.

4. - The Jazz and Trailblazers sleepwalk through 3/4 of the game last night because there are only 5 games left in the season and they are heading to the playoffs.
4a. - Can you imagine the Utes and any MWC opponent just going through the motions with only five games left in the season and tournament seedings still on the line?

5. - Larry Miller is a visible (and horribly dressed) presence at courtside at nearly every Jazz game.
5a - I've never seen LHM at a Ute game.

6. - Greg Ostertag is the center for the Jazz. 'Nuff said.
6a - Nate Althoff is the center for the Utes. At least there is reason to hope.

7.- As God is my witness a fight broke out in front of me last night at the Jazz game between two guys and a man with one arm. Security escorted the rowdies out.
7a - Alleged spitting incidents aside, I've never seen a fight break out in the stands at a Ute game.

8. - Brian Grant of the Blazers looks like Cheryl Miller on a bad hair day, and wears some kind of a hair band in that mop to boot. Maybe the idea is to draw attention away from his dozen or so tattoos. (His Mother must be sooooo proud).
8a - Imagine a Ute looking like that.

9. - The Jazz Bear wanders around and waves his arms at the crowd.
9a - Swoop does the same, but just somehow looks better doing it.

10 - I had to sit two seats down from a guy in a purple Jazz sweatshirt and blue BYU sweatpants. Almost tossed my popcorn up. Must be what passes for fashion in the windows of the shops at the University Mall in Provo.
10a - Red works with almost everything at a Utes game.
