Thoughts about The Michigan St. Game and next year...

I am so proud of our guys that I can't even begin to express it. If that game could be characterized as a real life and death situation, it would be The Alamo. Those guys left it all out there and gave Michigan State probably the toughest game they'll play until they hit the Final Four.

  • Was anyone else as impressed by Colbert as I was? I thought he played a great couple of games against St. Louis and Michigan State. He actually looked comfortable out there. He's starting to learn how he can use his quickness and athetecism for good instead of evil. I heard that he's in trouble academically though... :(
  • Did anyone ever find out where we found the real Phil Cullen? This guy is a gamer. Last year when we needed big shots is when he would step up and hit them. Now when we have our backs against the wall, he plays the two biggest games of his career. If he follows Allred around this summer in the weight room instead of playing baseball, he could be a monster next year.
  • Majerus never ceases to amaze me. Every single time I think "Ok, the Utes are toast." they come out and put on a show. I admit. I didn't give the Utes a chance in hell against Arizona or North Carolina two years ago. It seems like Majerus works his best magic when the Utes have their backs against the wall. I don't know what he tells them or puts in the Gatorade, but the guy is just amazing.
  • Of all the Ute teams I have watched, I think this one is my favorite (with the 14-14 team a close second). Their heart can never be questioned. The epitomized everything that we fans like to see. Guys who can't jump, shoot, or even walk limping around on the floor playing their hearts out and taking the best team in the nation (in my book) as far as they can go.

I'm thinking of keeping the Utah/MSU tape because it's just amazing to watch.

During the telecast of the game yesterday, they mentioned that Phil would not be playing baseball this year because he is probably looking at some surgery on his wrist this spring. That is good. He can work on bulking up some (however, some guys just can't bulk up, no matter how much they try). I agree, he did play well, after doing a disappearing act much of the season. I for one am excited about the prospect of the next two years. Next year the Utes have one senior. If the team jells, it's going to be fun to watch.

This year, more than any other, I have a feeling that we may not experience the Rick Majerus "job search" as in years past. He squashed the Georgia Tech rumors pretty quickly. I hope that I am right.

This program IS NOT in decline. We're just reloading for another run, and byu would be well advised to get out of the way.

    Matt:

I agree with you on your post...

Colbert showed energy when he got out on the break plus his passes were crisper than earlier in the year. Hopefully his grades will get in order and will come back. We need quickness, a second PG and he has the tools.

There is no doubt Cullen needs to bulk up. How many lay ups hid he have blocked this year? One thing that I have noticed about Cullen, he has no low post moves (no baby hook or drop step move etc.). Maybe he should be used for what he is. Instant offense off the bench! A 6-9 guy with great range on his shot.

Next year's team? While lacking in experience, it will have on trait this one didn't, offense. Spivey, Burgess and Britton all supposedly have an edge about their offensive game. Something only Hanno offered that this year.

It's a good bet next year's team will start slow as they get used to the system, hopefully peaking at the end of the year.

MWC- Wyoming could be the pre-season favorite with what they have returning and byu, NM and CSU all should be improved.
