Runnin' Utes Message Board

Dick Hunsaker comments . . .

OK granted these are second hand - and like all rumors you can take them for what they're worth. I have a friend who spoke with Dick Hunsaker personally in the last two weeks and Dick had the following to say:

1. He thought Majerus handled the Judkins poorly and told Majerus so.

2. Weber promised him the open job before the end of the season and he thought began looking for a house in Ogden. Judkins agreed to be his #1 assistant at Weber - and only went to BYU when he had no other option.

3. The Utes were lucky to get Spivy as he could have gone anywhere he wanted. Burgess was a big key in getting Spivy as they had played together in HS all-star tourneys and against each other as freshmen in the ACC. He was glad the Utes knew what they were getting in Spivy before having to wait to see him play. (Dick didn't mention Colbert - but my friend thought that this was a pretty blatant slam on Gary.)

4. The Utes still want Meads bad but don't think he'll make his decision until after his mission. Meads was solidly committed to Utah until September when his parents asked him to seriously consider BYU for religious reasons. (Whatever that means?!?) He didn't feel like it had anything to do with Judkins since his change came 4-5 months after Judkins had gone to BYU. Meads doesn't particularly like Dawes or Pinegar, but does like Mark Jackson from Olympus. (Wonder why the Utes signed him?) Meads' parents are the big stumbling blocks to anything right now. In fact, Hunsaker feels that Meads' parents have played the Utes much more than any other recruit - and Hunsaker was clearly frustrated. He was solid on the fact that even if Meads signs that teams won't stop recruiting him until he plays. He doesn't expect Meads to sign before his mission. He still feels that Meads is much better than any of the other in-state recruits this year.

5. Hunsaker is an active Mormon, has a current TR and was EQ Pres while coaching at Ball St. (not that this matters of course, but some on this board have insinuated that he was a less than active participant in the LDS Church.)

6. He would like a head coaching job ASAP. (Wouldn't all asst's?)

7. If Daniels doesn't leave on his own, he will likely go the way of Judkins this off season. Daniels is seriously and furiously pursuing the Santa Barbara? (was that it?) job.

8. (keep in mind that this was 10 days ago) Hanno's at 50% if not less.

9. The Utes will have the most talent in any Majerus year - except for maybe '97 next year, and it should be fun. He believes that Spivy, Burgess, and Britton COULD all play in the NBA. He doesn't think that either Hanno or Alex will make it in the NBA - tho' Hanno has a better shot.
