The verbal of Bradley really doesn't alter the Colbert situation -- that much. Bradley will come in primarily as a two, and probably play some one in certain situations. Whether or not Colbert stays is most likely up to him, given the likely decreased PT due to the arrival of Spivey, not Bradley...
I think Sharp and Puzey have much more to fear than Colbert. In terms of potential, a comparison between the three isn't even close. Colbert came on strong late in the year, especially defensively. If he stays, he will still be the most "athletic" player on the team next year. I still think Colbert has a tremendous upside, once he rebuilds his confidence...
In any event, what is evident is that Jeff Johnsen ought to shake off the lingering effects of missionitis soon because he is going to be in one hell of a battle for any PT next year (actually, I think Rick will start him at the two next year but his time will diminish week by week and he will eventually lose the starting nod, unless he impresses significantly and the other twos are slow in development).
If we sign the Juco in Florida, this team could be something special in two years, and probably pretty damn good this coming year. Perhaps Majerus can pull Travon out of his magic box if he's a non-qualifier. If so, Meads doesn't mean anything other than BYU is back to where they have always been, a good team, full on all LDS players and nothing more. Lets hope Bradley can give the Utes something akin to what Lyday gave the Cougs.
I guess sharing the conference championship with another team just might have added a little spark to Majerus' recruiting. Here's looking to a bright and bold future in Utah basketball.
Legal Ute
I don't think Bradley coming to the U helped Colbert...I can't imagine him staying around...and that's because he may not want to with so many players at the guard position. Bradley was just another guard along with Spivey, Jacobson, Caton and Johnsen (even though of a couple of those guys can play at the small forward)...it is just a very good group of guards.
I think this helps Jacobson. He will not be expected to come in and give us big points and big time play. A lot still will be expected of him but he doesn't need to be all-american right off the bat now because it appears we have several solid guards to help with his development.
You know, Bradley could play off-guard (even though I think most of his minutes will be at point). Think of this, if Spivey and Bradley are in the game together...Spivey could guard the off guard (Spivey is suppose to be a very solid defensive player and he is 6'2) while Bradley could guard the point and then on offense, they could switch it. Interesting possibilities. A smaller lineup with these two and Jacobson, B. Johnsen and Burgess or a huge lineup with Althoff, Burgess, B. Johnsen, Jacobson (or Caton) and Spivey. The possibilities are endless. Lets quit talking about hoops, I am way too excited for the season...and its only the end of March. Crap...how many months do I have to wait. Go Utes.
I would love for him to stay and have all three guys. I don't think Bradley's coming necessarily means Colbert is gone, he also plays the two and would give a lot of flexibility. I cant imagine Colbert's on court progress is a problem but there may be an off court or classroom angle (I hope not). If that is the case then the signing was critical to get backup insurance and a quick option at the two.
If, as I hope, Colbert stays then I think Jeff and Caton will be the guys losing minutes and Jacobson will have more time/less pressure to develop. Colbert can share the point with both guys and Spivey and Bradley can also get minutes at the two when we need to match-up small and quick. These three get about 60 minutes leaving 20 at the two for Jacobson/Caton with the extra minutes behind Britton at three being shared by them and Jeff. maybe only 35 total for the three guys so even a redshirt for a late returning Caton is possible. I cant see jeff as a two guard, not enough range and his ,uh, basketball IQ seems double digit.
If Colbert leaves then another 20 minute frees up for the five guys unless we sign the Zwing. If that happens I see much more threat to Jeff than Bradley presents to Colbert.
On the scholarship front, If colbert stays then either Sharp (please) or Puzey have to go and if we sign the wing they both go. One can stay if Colbert goes but trading Colbert for Sharp will break my heart. Cullen for either would also be sad.
My fantasy roster for next year:
Point: Colbert, SpiveyHey, its not BYU but not everybody can be that good.
SG: Jacobson, Bradley, Caton
SF: Britton, Z-man, Jeff
PF: Burgess, Cullen
Center: Althoff, Allred, Gotfried(RS)
Either Caton or Jeff could red-shirt as well as minutes will be very tough to come by. We would have the kind of flexibility we have never had to play three quick guys at once to meet match-up problems or play full or three quarter pressure once in a while. We could go from ultra quick with Colbert, Spivey, Bradley, Britton and Cullen to huge with Spivey, Britton, Cullen, Althoff and Burgess. The amount of flexibility is so great because so many guys can play two spots (three if we let Britton get a minute at SG just for the size of it). Colbert and Nate are about the only ones at just one slot.
Bradley was a real stud in high school here in Los Angeles and is a great addition. We could have has much depth as Florida next year. Donovan was able to keep a lot of high school AA's happy with everybody paying 15-22 minutes and i think Rick can do it too.
