Saturday was another great Ute memory for me and my 7 year old son, who were in attendance. Watching the Utes blow out the helpless Lobos after all their early season smack was rewarding as Hell. I've read where the New Mexico people don't believe Majerus likes Bliss, for whatever reason. I think that's ludicrous, because every time the two teams meet, Rick gives Dave a free lesson in coaching. The only problem is that Dave doesn't seem to learn.
The pre-game ceremony was short, but intense. The game was enjoyable as hell. My friend leaned over and said to me during the game, "I think I died and went to heaven". We dispatched them without even breaking a sweat. The only suspense was just how dirty the gangsta Henry and Thomas were going to get. Real good guys. Get embarrased on CBS, then show everyone you have no discipline or class. Got to help the draft status.
At the end, I watched the initial rush hit the floor, then the Usher-Nazis shut it down. I watched one poor fan in a white sweatshirt run around the pile three times while this self-important security geek chased him and finally caught him. Still, the after game ceremonies were great. I love watching the team cut down the net, because they finally show some personality. These are the best of times for the Utes, and why being a Ute fan is great and getting better. Thanks, Coach Majerus.
As someone pointed out below, this has become a great team. My thoughts on the key players:
Andre = WAC and (prediction) NATIONAL POY
Jensen = My favorite player of all time. He always seems to make the key plays, be it defensive, or rebounding, or offense. I think he's got to be the smartest, or most intuitive player ever at Utah. He's as much the glue as Andre. And he has more stitches.
Mottola = Next years superstar. He's finally putting it all together.
Harvey = has come up to speed quicker in Rick's program than anyone in the last several years. His return and our streak are no coincidence.
Althoff - Shoot the Ball with confidence, Nate. It's getting to the point where that's the only thing missing from your game. Your defense is great.
Killion - 3 point monster and a rock on the pick
We will win the WAC, becoming the only team to ever sweep the season and the postseason. I think TCU was an abberation last year. They did it in the easy division, not in the real wac. It shouldn't count.
Best chant of the game: When the lower student section held up the anatomically correct female blow-up doll, and chanted "we got Kenny's girlfriend!" Even Kenny smiled.
Watching the game on T.V., I couldn't tell if there was a huge ovation for Andre when he he was taken out of the game for the last time. I would hope so. The announcers didn't make that big a deal of it. How was it in person?
In Response To: Andre (LA Ute)
The ovation for Andre when he was taken from the game wasn't as great as I would have liked it to be. It wasn't done at a time in the game when alot of people noticed and then were able to respond. It was done after the first of two free throws by New Mexico, and by the time anyone realized it, the game was back on and going down to the other end.
Andre definitely received his due both before the game and after. The Huntsman crowd today was as good as any that I have ever seen in 30+ years of watching Ute hoops. Even when we had a 40 point lead, the crowd was completely into each and every basket that we scored.
It was so good to see New Mexico get totally dominated. It was a great day to be a Ute!!!!!!
It was so much fun to be in the students section today. The entire crowd never let up, even while we were up 40. You would have thought it was a close game. It was cool to see those who made it down to the floor. i was in section F and there was no way I was going to make it to Sec C. I had my camcorder with me and taped Andre's ceremony and some other pregame stuff. I taped the "flooding" and it looks really cool, as does the net-cutting and so forth. For those who weren't there, i cant describe the atmosphere. We were up 58-29 or so and went on a 12-0 run to make it 70-29. Each time we scored, the crowd got louder and louder. I liked Majerus' speech. It was short and to the point: Andre's unbelieveable, on and off the court.
Way to go students!!!!! Awesome enthusiasm. Bring to it Vegas
I hate New Mexico!!! It was great when the students started chanting "Kenny's got a temper.... Kenny's got a temper"
Looks like Utah will get the TCU/SJSU winner, provided SJSU doesn't lose to SDSU
"Nearly nine minutes into the game, UNM had yet to score. Taunting the Lobos was the overhead scoreboard, which read: Utah 14, New Mexico (blank). The Lobos didn't even have a zero next to their name, which was appropriate since they never were in the game."
Utah Rick
I know I speak for many of you when i say that this season has been a real treat for the fans. After the season began, and we watched the Utes falter and fall to Rhode Island, Texas, Indiana, and the Aggies (aarrrggghhh!), I think most of us were resigned to the fact that the Utes would have a sub-par season. I know I had convinced myself that this would not be our year, that with all of our new recruits we'd have a tough year. And I know alot of the people on this board felt the same way. We were constantly explaining to "outsiders" on this board that we were rebuilding. We had lost Big Mike and Drew Hansen. We'd be lucky to contend for a WAC title, let alone another trip back to the NCAA's.
And then this. This nice surprise. The Utes pulled it together and ran the table in the WAC. Most of their wins were double digit wins. We watched them dominate a UNM team that many thought would win the WAC outright, in the Pit no less. No one in the WAC was able to hold a candle to the Utes, a team of smart players like Al and Andre, and a bunch of scrawny freshman like Cullen and Johnston. Harvey proved to be better than advertised ,and Killion was just as deadly from outside as we'd heard. And both Harvey and Killion learned how to play defense.
What a nice treat. And this week the guys return to the WAC tourney and they're going to win it. They're going to leave the WAC undefeated. And then they'll surprise alot of doubters out there again, and make one more deep run into the tourney. I can't wait.
It's great to be a Ute fan.
