Boylen's Recruiting.......and stuff......Posted By: ColoUte Date: 2010-04-09 08:56:34 So, with the fallout of the Henderson transfer just about finished, I thought I'd just throw a quick cup of gasoline on the fire one last time before moving on.
I noticed that many people are placing the direct blame of all of this on Boylen's inability to recruit. Fair enough, I guess. I mean recruiting's probably his most important job. And what did he do with this responsibility? He went out and recruited an 18 year old kid who apparently is interested in getting laid.
What the %^ was he thinking?????
In looking at it, it seems to me that if anything, Boylen's greatest recruiting sin is that he's spending far more time evaluating a player's basketball skill than he is evaluating his character.
I mean, of the guys leaving, he had a guy who didn't want to work hard, a guy who wanted to bitch about everything and lead a revolt, and a guy who wanted his life to be MTV's Spring Break 365 days a year.
So how does he correct this? I mean, the NCAA allows like 15 minutes total in evaluation time. Coaches aren't allowed to attend practices, so he can't judge a consistent work ethic. And if the NCAA won't allow him to bring cookies and milk to the malcontent's weekly "Uprising" meetings, they'd probably also want Boylen to submit to blood testing to ensure that the BYOB he took into party boy's nightly Rock-n-roll bikini bashes were only consumed by himself and/or underaged women....NOT any prospective recruits.
I mean, does he need to start sending out questionnaires:
Dear Prospective Ute Recruit:
We'd love to have you playing in Salt Lake City next season, but first there are a few things we need to know about you....
- Are you a complete and utter gym rat....when you're not studying, of course.
- Are you mute?
- Are you a Eunuch.
If you answered "Yes" to at least 2 of these, welcome to the Runnin' (That's right, RUNNIN', not sittin', bitchin', or screwin') Utes.
That said, I'm guessing that Boylen will learn from this. He'll still probably error to the side of spending more time evaluting how well they actually play basketball, but I'm guessing he'll start picking up on more subtle character clues during his contact time.
I'm actually starting to hear things about the recruits coming in, and I'm somewhat encouraged. JJ O'Brien was the MVP (2 times by some publications) of a league that has at least 10 D1 players coming out of it this year....including Kendall Williams, a guy who committed to UCLA as a Sophomore, but who New Mexico is installing a banner for stealing away last month, and USC commit, Byron Wesley.
The quote I heard about Dominique Lee is that "He's the best high school perimeter defender I've seen in High School in years. If the ball so much as scrapes his 'Vitruvian Man' profile, you can mark down a steal and a dunk."
And Preston Guiot was a McDonalds AA finalist in Missouri. And a question about him....Why are so many people claiming, "He's not a Point Guard." His recruiting profiles show his ball-handling and passing as his strengths and list both as 'Outstanding'. He averaged well over 7 assists per game last year, and about a 2.6:1 Assist:TO rato. What is it that we are actually looking for from a point guard? Frankly, if I could that kind of production out of a Point Guard, I could probably force myself to choke down whatever scoring he provided as well.
If Boylen can land Clyburn, I think we actually will be better next year - defections or no. I'm not predicting we'll win the conference or make a deep NCAA run, but I think we'll win more than we lose and will play a brand of ball we can be proud of.
GO UTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
